WASHINGTON ? The U.S. Coast Guard released its 2013 Recreational Boating Statistics Wednesday, revealing that boating fatalities that year totaled 560 ? the lowest number of boating fatalities on record.

From 2012 to 2013, deaths in boating-related accidents decreased 14 percent, from 651 to 560, and injuries decreased from 3,000 to 2,620, a 12.7 percent reduction. The total reported recreational boating accidents decreased from 4,515 to 4,062, a 10 percent decrease.

The fatality rate for 2013 of 4.7 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels reflected a 13 percent decrease from the previous year's rate of 5.4 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. Property damage totaled approximately $39 million.

"We are pleased that there have been fewer accidents on waterways in recent years and thank our partners for their work," said Capt. Jon Burton, director of inspections and compliance at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters. "Together we will continue to stress the importance of life jacket use, boating education courses and sober boating."

The report states alcohol use was the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 17 percent of deaths. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed and machinery failure ranked as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents.

Where the cause of death was known, 77 percent of fatal boating accident victims drowned; of those drowning victims, 84 percent were not wearing a life jacket. Where boating instruction was known, 20 percent of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had received boating safety instruction. The most common types of vessels involved in reported accidents were open motorboats, personal watercraft and cabin motorboats.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to boat responsibly while on the water: wear a life jacket, take a boating safety course, get a free vessel safety check and avoid alcohol consumption.

Wisconsin ends six-game home losing streak to Quad Cities, which drops first game since May 5

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (May 13, 2014) - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored in each of the first four innings to build a 6-0 lead Tuesday night, and the Quad Cities River Bandits had their six-game winning streak snapped by allowing a season-high 10 runs in a 10-4 loss at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Against right-hander Edison Frias (1-2), Wisconsin center fielder Johnny Davis led off the bottom of the first inning with a single. On a steal of second base, Davis went to third on an errant throw by catcher Brett Booth. Designated hitter Clint Coulter hit an RBI single to left-center field for the first run. With two outs, right fielder Michael Ratterree hit an RBI triple to right field, and third baseman Taylor Brennan added an RBI single to center field for a 3-0 Timber Rattlers lead.

Wisconsin (17-20) added single runs in each of the next three innings against Frias. In the second inning, Davis singled with two outs and stole second base again before scoring on a double by second baseman Chris McFarland. In the third inning, Ratterree launched his fifth home run of the Midwest League season to right-center field. In the fourth, shortstop Angel Ortega hit a one-out single, went to second base on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch that got away from Booth toward the third-base dugout. Frias finished four innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

As his team built a lead, Timber Rattlers left-hander Tyler Alexander shut out Quad Cities (18-19) for the first five innings, scattering three hits and striking out six batters. In the sixth, however, he began by giving up consecutive singles to center fielder James Ramsay and second baseman Chan-Jong Moon. After a groundout and Alexander's career-high seventh strikeout, right fielder Ronnie Mitchell grounded to first baseman Paul Eshleman, who misplayed it, allowing Ramsay and Moon to score. After Mitchell stole second base, third baseman Tyler White drove his first Midwest League home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 6-4. Alexander was done after 5 2/3 innings, allowing four unearned runs on six hits. Right-hander Harvey Martin entered to allow Booth's double before escaping the inning.

The Timber Rattlers answered in the next half inning against right-hander Zach Morton. Catcher Rafael Neda drew a leadoff walk, and Eshleman drove him in with a triple to right-center field. Ortega added an RBI single to make it 8-4. Morton gave up two runs in his two innings, before right-hander Andrew Walter began the seventh inning. In the eighth, Walter gave up an RBI single to McFarland, and left fielder Tanner Mathis dropped a deep fly ball by Coulter, bringing in the 10th Wisconsin run - the most by Quad Cities opponent since Cedar Rapids won, 12-4, in Davenport June 12, 2013.

Wisconsin right-hander Taylor Williams began the seventh inning and pitched three shutout innings with five strikeouts to earn his first save. He gave up ninth-inning singles to designated hitter Jobduan Morales and Mathis before getting the final two outs. Every player in the River Bandits lineup had at least one of the team's 10 hits.

Quad Cities faces Wisconsin for the series rubber match at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. River Bandits left-hander Evan Grills (1-0) is scheduled to face Timber Rattlers right-hander Barrett Astin (3-2).

uad Cities pitchers strike out 11 batters with no walks to push team back to .500

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (May 12, 2014) - First baseman Conrad Gregor had a season-high three RBIs Monday night, including the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the Quad Cities River Bandits, who won their season-high sixth straight game, 4-3 over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Quad Cities lost leads of 2-0 and 3-1, but eventually prevailed for the first time on the road in a one-run game to reach .500 (18-18) for the first time since April 17. The six-game winning streak is the team's longest since a seven-game streak July 28-Aug. 3, 2013.

The River Bandits took their first lead in the third inning against Timber Rattlers right-hander Preston Gainey. Center fielder Brett Phillips was hit by a pitch and stole second base. With two outs, shortstop Jack Mayfield lined an RBI double down the left-field line, and Gregor followed with an RBI double on a ground ball past first baseman Steve Halcomb to make it 2-0.

River Bandits right-hander Michael Feliz set down the first eight batters - including a season-high six on strikeouts - and did not allow a baserunner until Wisconsin shortstop Angel Ortega tripled on a play when Phillips slipped on wet turf in center field. Feliz retired 10 of the first 11 he faced before a fourth-inning, one-out single by catcher Clint Coulter ended his outing at 3 1/3 innings. He was charged with two hits and an earned run, after right-hander Patrick Christensen allowed an infield RBI single by Wisconsin third baseman Taylor Brennan.

Quad Cities added to the lead in the top of the fifth inning, as right fielder James Ramsay drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored following consecutive one-out singles by Mayfield and Gregor. But Wisconsin (16-20) answered by tying the game in the bottom of the fifth against Christensen. Halcomb reached on a throwing error by Mayfield, and center fielder Johnny Davis singled on a one-out ground ball to center field. After Davis stole second base, second baseman Chris McFarland lined a game-tying, two-run single to center field. Christensen retired Coulter on a flyout, and McFarland was thrown out trying to steal to end the inning. Christensen completed 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs - one earned - with one strikeout.

Gainey worked 4 2/3 innings for Wisconsin, and left-hander Trevor Seidenberger pitched scoreless relief until the top of the seventh inning. In a 3-3 tie, second baseman Chan-Jong Moon reached on an error by Ortega and went to third base on Mayfield's third hit, which came as Moon was running toward second. With runners at first and second base and no outs, Gregor hit a fly to deep center field that scored the go-ahead unearned run. Seidenberger ended his 2 1/3-inning outing by getting a ground-ball double play.

River Bandits right-hander Jandel Gustave (2-2) began the sixth inning and gave up a one-out double to right fielder Michael Ratterree, who reached third base on a wild pitch but was stranded after a popup and strikeout to end the inning. Gustave retired 10 straight batters before left fielder Omar Garcia's two-out, ninth-inning single. Gustave struck out Halcomb to complete four shutout innings and the game.

Quad Cities continues the series in Wisconsin at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday. River Bandits right-hander Edison Frias (1-1) is scheduled to face Timber Rattlers left-hander Tyler Alexander (2-3).

James Ramsay reaches base four times and hits two-run, go-ahead single in the seventh inning

DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 10, 2014) - Right-hander Andrew Thurman and left-hander Chris Lee each pitched four innings of one-run ball, and the Quad Cities River Bandits scored twice in each of the sixth through eighth innings to sweep the Beloit Snappers, 6-2, and win a season-high fifth straight game in front of 4,926 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.

Beloit (13-22) took a first-inning lead against Thurman, as center fielder Herschel "Boog" Powell hit a leadoff single to right field, and left fielder B.J. Boyd drew a walk. Third baseman B.A. Vollmuth hit an RBI single down the third-base line, and with two outs, Thurman issued a walk to load the bases. But he escaped the inning with one run allowed by striking out second baseman Luis Baez to begin a stretch of retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced.

Snappers right-hander Dylan Covey kept Quad Cities (17-18) scoreless through the first five innings, yielding just two hits and two walks. In the sixth, however, River Bandits center fielder Brett Phillips hit a leadoff single, and right fielder James Ramsay drew a walk. Second baseman Chan-Jong Moon bunted just in front of home plate for an infield single that loaded the base with no outs. Covey got designated hitter Jack Mayfield to hit into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Phillips with the tying run. First baseman Conrad Gregor then brought in Ramsay for the go-ahead run with an infield single behind second base. Covey finished six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Lee (1-1) began the fifth inning with a 1-0 deficit and worked around a leadoff single to toss two scoreless innings, but he had a 2-1 lead to begin the seventh. Baez led off that frame with an infield single, advanced to second base on a sacrifice and scored when shortstop Melvin Mercedes grounded a game-tying double down the third-base line. With one out and the go-ahead run at second base, Powell grounded a ball that struck Mercedes a short distance from second base for the second out. Lee then picked Powell of first base to end the inning.

In a 2-2 tie, right-hander Tyler Hollstegge (0-1) retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shortstop Thomas Lindauer worked a walk, and Phillips doubled to right field to put runners at second and third base. Ramsay then lined a two-out, two-run single past Baez for a 4-2 lead. Ramsay reached base in all four plate appearances with two walks, a double and the single.

Lee maintained the lead with a perfect eighth inning to complete a season-high four relief innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The River Bandits added to the lead in the eighth inning against right-hander Lee Sosa. Gregor hit a leadoff double to right-center field, third baseman Tyler White reached on an error by Vollmuth, and catcher Brian Holberton drove in both runners with a double to left-center field.

Right-hander Zach Morton pitched a perfect ninth inning, clinching Quad Cities' longest regular season winning streak since a seven-game winning streak July 28-Aug. 3, 2013.

Right-hander earns first win since 2012, extending Quad Cities' season-high winning streak

DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 9, 2014) - Right-hander Adrian Houser earned his first Midwest League victory as the first Quad Cities River Bandit to pitch six shutout innings this season, and his team won its season-high fourth straight game by a 5-1 final over the Beloit Snappers in front of a season-high 7,111 at Modern Woodmen Park Friday night.

Houser (1-1) retired the first eight batters of the game and had a 2-0 lead before the Snappers (13-21) had a baserunner. After pitching no more than four innings in any outing this season, Houser earned his first win since Aug. 18, 2012, and worked six innings for the first time since July 11, 2012. He scattered four hits and walked only two batters while striking out a season-high seven.

Houser stuck out at least one batter in every inning but the fifth, when Beloit managed its only two-baserunner inning against him. With two outs and runners at second and third bases, River Bandits center fielder James Ramsay chased down a deep fly ball by Snappers center fielder B.J. Boyd, ending Beloit's only chance with the tying run in scoring position over the final eight innings.

Quad Cities (16-18) took the lead in the first inning against left-hander Chris Lamb (0-1). Ramsay drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and scored on first baseman Chase McDonald's RBI double to left-center field. Catcher Brian Holberton then singled to center field, bringing in McDonald and extending Holberton's team-season-high on-base streak to 16 games.

After Holberton's hit, Lamb retired 10 of the next 11 batters. He struck out eight batters and kept the 2-0 score until the fifth inning, when shortstop Thomas Lindauer hit a leadoff single to left field. Lindauer stole second base and after Ramsay drew a one-out walk, second baseman Chan-Jong Moon grounded into a fielder's choice while beating the relay throw to first base. But Lindauer kept running and scored from second base ahead of the throw to make it 3-0. Lamb allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks in five innings.

Quad Cities' left-hander Albert Minnis started the seventh inning with a 3-0 lead. He struck out two batters but walked two and allowed a single to load the bases. Right-hander Tyler Brunnemann came in to strike out right fielder Tyler Marincov to escape the jam.

In a 3-0 game, Snappers right-hander Sam Bragg walked Ramsay to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. Moon drove an RBI triple - his third of the homestand - to center field and scored on third baseman Tyler White's sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.

The shutout was intact until Beloit second baseman led off the ninth inning with a home run off Brunnemann, whose scoreless streak ended at 17 1/3 innings dating back to April 3. Brunnemann allowed a double and two walks to load the bases with two outs before being removed after two innings of work. With the tying run at the plate, left-hander Chris Cotton entered to strike out left fielder Jaycob Brugman to earn his first save in 16 career appearances.

Friday's crowd was the seventh-largest at Modern Woodmen Park since the start of the 2002 season and the largest for any April or May game in that time. Quad Cities will conclude the homestand at 6 p.m. Saturday. River Bandits right-hander Andrew Thurman (2-2) is scheduled to face Snappers right-hander Dylan Covey (2-2), as the home team seek its first sweep of an opponent this season.
