Des Moines, Iowa (January 24, 2019) — Nineteen Iowans have applied to fill the Iowa Supreme Court vacancy that occurred upon Justice Daryl Hecht’s retirement December 13, 2018.

January 22, 2018 (Des Moines, IA) – Today, the Polk County District Court ruled that Iowa’s 6- week abortion ban violates the Iowa’s state constitution and issued a permanent injunction.

As the district court ruled, the statute would have banned abortion well before viability. Indeed, the statute would have banned abortion at a stage in pregnancy before many women even know they are pregnant.

At approximately 0500 hours on Friday, December 28, 2018, a LeClaire officer was patrolling a residential neighborhood in LeClaire when he spotted a suspicious vehicle that was running outside of a residence. As the officer pulled up behind it, the vehicle turned off all of its lights and sped off. The officer relocated the vehicle a short time later on a dead end in the same neighborhood.

Des Moines, May 23, 2018— The State Judicial Nominating Commission, which is responsible for selecting nominees for appointment to the Iowa Supreme Court, announced today it will begin accepting applications for the vacancy that will occur when Justice Bruce B. Zager retires September 3, 2018. The commission has sixty days to send a slate of nominees to the Governor, who makes appointments to the court.  

Oral arguments will be heard in a potential landmark court case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta this coming Tuesday, May 15 at 9:00 AM.

Maurice Walker vs. the City of Calhoun, Georgia, concerns an individual who was arrested and his contention that he was unlawfully denied the right to bail because of his inability to pay the amount indicated by a set bond schedule.

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Kim Reynolds and a broad coalition of stakeholders will host a statewide forum on public safety next month to address challenges in rural Iowa, restorative justice, improving responses to those in the criminal justice system with behavioral health needs and strengthening community supervision.
