We received nearly 80 entries in response to the first-ever River Cities' Reader photo contest, and we couldn't be more pleased with the results. We divided the contest into three categories - people, Quad Cities places, and digitally altered - and the diversity of the entries shows the wide range of possibilities for the photographic arts. While the cover photograph by David Hartley has the sheen of advertising, Eric Mathis' picture is detailed, candid, and documentary. Many of the entries in the "places" category were gorgeously scenic, while several explored the industrial geometry of Quad Cities bridges. And the "digitally altered" category featured everything from relatively straightforward portraits to abstract images.

Thanks to all who entered, and to photographer Brian Barkley for his assistance in judging the contest. Look for the second Reader photo contest next year!
