Our fourth photo contest represented a significant departure - both in the framing of the competition and the results. Instead of setting subject-matter limitations - such as previous categories "people" and "Quad Cities places" - we asked readers to submit photographs based on broad but evocative themes: "danger," "metamorphosis," and "liberation. "

Looking at the more than 90 entries, it was clear that the categories affected what we received. There were far fewer people in the submissions, and the photographs tended more toward the abstract and conceptual. The categories also seemed to affect tone; the photographs on these pages are more dynamic and moodier than those in past contests. On the downside, they also seem less ambiguous.

Many thanks to our contest judges: the Reader staff, and regular contributors Brian Barkely, Scott McMeekan, and Johanna Welzenbach-Hilliard. Look for the next photo contest in spring 2006.
