Artist-in-Residence Vivian Hyelim Kim Leads Collage Painting Workshop

WEST BRANCH, IOWA? Visual artist Vivian Hyelim Kim, Artist-in-Residence at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, will present a collage painting workshop at West Branch High School on Thursday, May 16. Participants will learn and experiment with paper folding and cutting techniques. The final pieces will be patterned on a canvas background painted by participants.


The workshop is a partnership between the National Park Service and the West Branch Community School District. It begins at 6:30 p.m. on May 16 and lasts 90 minutes. It is free to attend and all materials are provided. Participants may take their finished products with them.


Reservations are required. To reserve call park ranger Kristin Gibbs at (319) 643-7866. The workshop is appropriate for ages 13 to adult and is limited to 20 participants.


Vivian Hyelim Kim was born in South Korea and was raised in the U.S. She received her MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in New York and BFA from Arizona State University Herberger College of Fine Arts. She has had solo shows at Chashama Gallery in New York City and in Seoul, South Korea. Ms. Kim will be the park's Artist-in-Residence through May 25.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site Will Host a Lecture Series on Geology in the National Parks

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– In recognition of President Herbert Hoover's interest in
geology and conservation, Dr. Richard Baker will present a series of four
lectures about geology in our national parks, focusing on Yellowstone
(October 24), Grand Canyon (November 14), Glacier (January 23), and
Dinosaur and Badlands (February 27). Dr. Baker is a professor emeritus in
the Geoscience Department at the University of Iowa. He completed his
doctorate research at Yellowstone National Park. He has traveled to many of
our national parks and has taught a course on them at the University of
Iowa. The lecture series is free and meets at the visitor center of Herbert
Hoover National Historic Site from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Before he became famous as a humanitarian and later as President of the
United States, Herbert Hoover and his wife Lou Henry Hoover graduated from
Stanford University with degrees in geology. Herbert Hoover turned his
formal education into a successful career as a mining engineer and wrote
books and articles about mining. The two Hoovers even translated from Latin
the 16th century mining book De Re Metallica,published one hundred years
ago in 1912. Herbert Hoover also enjoyed outdoor recreation and valued
conservation of natural resources. During Hoover's presidency from 1929 to
1933, the size of our national forests expanded by more than two million
acres and the land area of our national parks and monuments increased by 40
percent.

Herbert Hoover NHS News: September 29 is National Public Lands Day

Saturday, September 29 is National Public Lands Day


WEST BRANCH, IOWA- On Saturday, September 29, 2012, volunteers across the United States will help restore the beauty and vitality of our public lands as part of the 19th annual National Public Lands Day. More than 170,000 volunteers are expected at more than 2,000 sites in communities and parks around the nation.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site will enlist local volunteers and volunteer organizations to help reconstruct the 81-acre native tallgrass prairie: a great opportunity to work hands-on with our natural resources. Volunteers will cut and haul shrubs and invasive weeds from the grassland.

If you would like to help, contact Adam Prato at (319) 643-2541. Meet at the Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m. for an orientation and to get signed up. Work in the prairie will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable work clothes. Water, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, and hats are recommended. Long pants and closed-toe footwear are required.

Herbert Hoover NHS News: Prairie Programs on Monday, September 3

Explore Iowa's prairie heritage on Labor Day Monday, September 3. Ranger-guided walks of the 81-acre tallgrass prairie will start at 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Meet at the Tallgrass Prairie Observation Deck by the Gravesite parking lot.

A park ranger will discuss how and why the National Park Service is reconstructing this endangered habitat as part of the landscape commemorating Herbert Hoover's life. The walk is less than a mile and lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Bring water, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes. Hats, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, and insect repellent are also recommended. Parking is limited so please allow extra time to find a parking space.

At 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Sarah Utoff will perform "Laura Ingalls Wilder Remembered" at the Presidential Library and Museum. The performance and the prairie walks are free.

Public Can Review and Comment on Exotic Plant Management Plan Online

WEST BRANCH, IOWA–The National Park Service is beginning the development of an Exotic Plant Management Plan and an Environmental Assessment (EA) that includes Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, Iowa. The EA will address management of the park's natural areas that are home to native plant communities.  Particular attention will be placed on eradication, control, and containment of exotic (nonnative) invasive plants. A similar planning effort, for a Vegetation Management Plan for Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, will resume upon the findings of this EA.  The Exotic Plant Management will be incorporated into the overall Vegetation Management Plan for Herbert Hoover National Historic Site.

The public may review and comment on the project online though PEPC (Planning, Environment and Public Comment), the online collaborative tool that gives the public unprecedented, easy access to documents used in developing and tracking projects within the National Park Service.  The project is titled #31771 Heartland Exotic Plant Management Plan and may be
