More than half of Iowa farmland is rented, and the percentage of farmland rented has increased over time due to the changing demographics of farmland owners. Iowa farmland cash rental rates decreased by $10 an acre from 2013 to 2014; east central Iowa cash rental rates decreased by 3.9 percent in 2014. Additionally, farmland values have increased by 10.8 percent in east central Iowa from 2012 to 2013, but have leveled off in the first quarter of 2014.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offices across east central Iowa are hosting farmland leasing meetings from August 6 through August 21 at selected locations. These meetings will address questions that land owners, tenants, or other interested individuals have about farmland leasing. Locations include Welton at 1:30 p.m. on August 6, Muscatine at 1 p.m. on Aug. 18 and Tipton at 6 p.m. on Aug. 20. Meetings are approximately 2 ½ hours in length.

Attendees will gain understanding of current cash rental rate surveys and factors driving next year's rents such as market trends and input costs. They will learn about types of leases and results of farmland value surveys. Additionally, information on 2012 Census of Agriculture, 2014 Farm Bill, CSR2, and Nutrient Reduction Strategy will be presented. A 100-page workbook will be included with registration that includes land leasing information such as surveys, sample written lease agreement and termination forms, and many other publications.

"Due to changes in commodity markets, cash rent values, and government programs farmland owners and tenants may have more decisions over the next year than in previous years, and this meeting provides information to stay up to date on farmland lease issues", says Ryan Drollette, ISU Extension and Outreach Farm and Ag Business Management Specialist. Drollette will be the presenter at the meeting.

Registration is $25 per individual and $40 per couple. A $5 late registration fee will be charged if registering less than two calendar days before the workshop. Pre-register and find out additional meeting and location details by calling the corresponding local county extension office for the desired meeting location.

Residents wanting information about agreements for Clean Line easements are offered an online video from The Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation.  "View it at your convenience if you are interested in the topic," said Becky Bray, Scott County Extension Director. "We're heading into a busy season for lots of rural people and we hope that they can view and possibly review this information as needed."

The Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation (CALT) has produced a video presentation of the legal issues associated with Clean Line Easement Agreements.  The presentation by CALT Director Roger McEowen and CALT Staff Attorney Kristine Tidgren addresses key issues facing landowners.  The presentation breaks down a standard easement agreement and puts particular emphasis on clause language that landowners may want to attempt to negotiate.  General topics addressed include the nature of the easement, the rights granted in the agreement, the structure of compensation, damages, landowner usage, cancellation rights, the ability to assign the agreement, termination events and eminent domain.  The session concludes with some common questions that have been raised about clean line easement agreements.

The presentation can be found at the following link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T08RjbbnRME

In any given year about 55 percent of the paper created in the United States is discarded. That amounts to 48 million tons, or the equivalent of 720 million trees that are used once and then buried in a landfill. The ISU Scott County Extension & Outreach Master Gardeners have invited Lee Coates, The Papercrete Potter to teach the "Art of Papercrete." With the simple technique you will learn in this class you will be able to turn a portion of this waste into a long lasting treasure.

Coates will teach each class how to mix the recipe and the steps to create weatherproof containers for planting, or a variety of sculptures, which could become a beautiful focal point in your garden. This is a simple, easily mastered process.

Each student will receive a mold and enough ready mixed material to build a papercrete bowl suitable for a dish garden. The bowl, mold, and a set of written directions are included in the cost of your class and will be yours to take home.

Beautiful containers, plants and items suitable for use in miniature landscapes and Fairy Gardens will be available to purchase, and there should be ample time to shop.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the ISU Scott County Extension and Outreach Office, 875 Tanglefoot Lane, Bettendorf, Iowa 52722, phone number 563-359-7577. Registration ends March 20, 2014.

Four one hour classes will be offered at: 8:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m., and 3:45 p.m. Please indicate your first and a second choice of class times. The cost of each class is $20.00, payable in advance at the Extension Office, or by mail sent to the Extension Office at the above address.
