COAL VALLEY, Ill. (Aug 17, 2017) – Niabi Zoo invites families to the zoo for solar eclipse viewing and nocturnal animal activities on Monday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We have a special opportunity to view a total solar eclipse for the first time in nearly 40 years,” said Joel Vanderbush, curator of conservation and education. “It will be interesting to see how the animals react as day suddenly turns to night.”

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (July 10, 2017) – Niabi Zoo’s beloved buff-cheeked gibbon, CJ, is celebrating her 18th birthday at on Sat., July 15, and you’re invited!

The birthday celebration includes a special zookeeper chat at 11 a.m. outside the gibbon habitat and enrichment activities for the gibbons every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (June 16, 2017) –  Niabi Zoo hosts Animal Tales, an 20-minute program that takes place every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. now through the end of July .

“Our education and outreach programs are very popular with families because they blend fun and learning,” said Lee Jackson, Niabi Zoo director, “Animals Tales is designed to instill a love for animals and the natural world in our youngest zoo guests.”

HAMPTON, Ill. (June 2, 2017)- Illiniwek Forest Preserve will host the Big Fish fishing contest now through June 30. Three winners from each age group will be awarded prizes.

“We have a prime fishing location here at Illiniwek along the Mississippi River,” says Mike Petersen, superintendent of Illiniwek Forest Preserve. “We want to get families out of the house to spend quality time together in the great outdoors.”

The new camels are housed in a large exhibit at the front of the Zoo.

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (May 12, 2017) –Two new Bactrian camels join the Niabi Zoo family on the weekend of May 13.

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (May 8, 2017) – Tammy Schmidt, Niabi Zoo assistant director, will speak about husbandry, reproduction, groupings and habitats at the first ever international Giant Otter Workshop at the Zoológico de Cali in Colombia, South America, May 9 to May 12.

PORT BYRON, Ill. (May 3, 2017) – The Rock Island County Forest Preserve District will open the first of a three-part multi-use trail system at Dorrance Park at 307 Agnes St., Port Byron, Ill., on Sunday, May 7.

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (April 7, 2017) –Two dozen new reptiles and new domestic animals are among the changes to be unveiled to Niabi guests when the Zoo opens for its 2017 season on Saturday, April 15. Members will also start the season early, with the annual egg hunt on opening day.
