Public is invited to purchase birthday gift on new Amazon Wish List

COAL VALLEY, Ill. (July 10, 2017) – Niabi Zoo’s beloved buff-cheeked gibbon, CJ, is celebrating her 18th birthday at on Sat., July 15, and you’re invited!

The birthday celebration includes a special zookeeper chat at 11 a.m. outside the gibbon habitat and enrichment activities for the gibbons every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Gibbons are among the most endangered apes in the world,” said Lee Jackson, Niabi Zoo director, “We’re lucky to have this rare species in the Quad Cities.”

Gibbons have an expected lifespan of 50 years in the wild. They rarely descend to the ground, but prefer to spend their time swinging through the jungle at speeds up to 35 miles an hour. Although they spend most of their time in the tress, Gibbons walk upright more than any other ape.

In conjunction with the party, Niabi is debuting a new “Wish List” on Amazon.com which is made up of six lists including: general zoo wish list, bird wish list, carnivore wish list, hoofstock wish list, primate wish list and reptile wish list. Items compiled in these list vary from $5-$500, and are meant to enrich the lives of the animals at Niabi.

“We often get asked by the public what they can do to help us,” said Tammy Schmidt, Niabi Zoo assistant director, “The wish list is a great way for people to choose exactly the items they want to purchase to directly impact the lives of the animals at Niabi.”
