Deforestation, global infectious diseases, and intellectual property rights - it's just another day of problem solving in the Rivermont fifth grade!  Rivermont Collegiate is excited to announce the fifth grade class has been chosen for the fifth year in a row to participate in the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) 20/20 Challenge. The NAIS 20/20 Challenge brings together schools in the United States (public and private, elementary and secondary) with schools in other countries to identify local solutions to a global problem.  The Internet-based international education program partners schools to work together on one of 20 problems described by J.F. Rischard in his book, High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them.  Together, students identify solutions that can be implemented in their own schools and communities.

Schools apply for the 20/20 Challenge and if accepted, are partnered with schools in another country.  Once partnered, schools work together to define and research the problem, identify a workable solution for their school's community and context, and map out steps of an implementation plan.  The program is praised for allowing students to explore the complexities of global issues that are difficult for even many adults to comprehend and develop critical thinking skills they will use for a lifetime.

In the past, the fifth grade class has partnered with schools in Guatemala, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Africa on topics such as biodiversity and global warming.  This year's problem is peacekeeping, conflict prevention, and combating terrorism.  Rivermont students will be working with students in California and New Zealand and, due to past success with the 20/20 Challenge, the Rivermont class has been chosen as the team leader.  The 20/20 Challenge will begin in January and we eagerly anticipate the fifth grade's innovative solutions to address peacekeeping, conflict prevention, and terrorism right here at Rivermont and in the Quad City community!

The aspiring artist.  The math whiz.  The avid reader.  The athletic go-getter.  Each child is different, with their own special talents, interests, developmental patterns, and emotional needs.  This is a key consideration when selecting a school for your child.  An environment that is right for one student may not be the best choice for another.  Fortunately, in the Quad Cities, we have educational options!  When exploring schools for your child, it is important to consider:

·         Is the curriculum appropriate for my child's talents and goals?

·         Will the school challenge my child, without overwhelming them?

·         Will my child be comfortable in the school's environment?  Will I?

·         Are the opportunities for my child to pursue individual interests?  And is there encouragement to do so?

At Rivermont Collegiate, intellectual curiosity isn't just encouraged or "taught" - but "caught."  Students' personal interests are fostered and rewarded, both by their peers and by faculty.  Faculty don't teach to a class average, but tailor curriculum, homework, and projects to each student.  Rivermont is small by design, with a 9:1 student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring not only individualized attention, but a close teacher-student relationship and a family-like school environment.

The selection of a school for your child shouldn't be taken lightly.  It is quite possibly the most important decision you can make for their future.  Study your options!  Send for information, tour schools, observe in classrooms, let your son or daughter experience a day in class, and talk with administrators, faculty, and current parents.  What are you waiting for?  Explore what Rivermont has to offer!  Drop in for:

Though the start of the school year finds many students reminiscing about lazy summer days of sleeping in and working on their tan, 79 aspiring young scientists ended the summer of 2011 much more than tan and well-rested!  Participants in the STARS (Students and Teachers As Research Scientists) program spent their summer researching everything from neural circuits to human/robot interaction at the University of Missouri - St. Louis.  Student participants are paired with research mentors from the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center (Creve Coeur, MO), Saint Louis University, the Solae Company, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Missouri - St. Louis.  For six weeks, researchers take on student apprentices, who complete science research projects and gain real-world laboratory experience.  For many students, this experience is one of the most important in their decision to pursue a career in science.

Rivermont Collegiate is proud to announce senior Meghana Pagadala, daughter of Mr. Kishore and Dr. Padma Pagadala of Rock Island, is a scholar graduate of the 2011 STARS program!  Meghana's research project, "The Mechanism by Which CD8+FoxP3+T Cells Regulate Osteoclast Activity", was completed with Dr. Rajeev Aurora from Saint Louis University.  Of the 79 STARS participants from 36 schools, only 4 students, including Meghana, came from outside the St. Louis metro area.  Participants are selected based on GPA, test scores (PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc.), student essays, and letters of recommendation.  The entire Rivermont community is extremely proud of Meghana and looks forward to her future contributions to the world of science!

Red or blue binder?  Crayons or colored pencils?  Ballpoint or gel pens?  As you begin preparing for the upcoming school year, don't forget the most important choice - the school itself.  As a parent, you have the freedom and right to choose a school with a philosophy and approach to learning that fits your child.  Where do teachers create educational experiences that suit individual needs?  Where are students motivated to be enthusiastic about learning in an academically rigorous environment?  Where are students part of a supportive learning community that stimulates personal growth, nurtures intellectual curiosity, and encourages critical thinking and innovation?  At Rivermont Collegiate, of course!

Rivermont, located in Bettendorf, is the Quad Cities' only private, independent, nonsectarian college-prep school for students in preschool through twelfth grade.  At Rivermont, small class sizes, individualized attention, and high academic standards result in students who nourish personal talents while gaining a critical foundation to life and learning.  Rivermont infuses a traditional curriculum with innovative ideas and technology, as well as the freedom to take risks in academics, leadership, athletics, arts, and service.  100% of Rivermont graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities and over 90% earn four-year renewable college merit scholarships.

The flip-flops are on.  The lemonade is made.  It's time to kick back, relax, and enjoy summer!  There's nothing children look forward to more than summer vacation - but it's also an important time to give thought to the upcoming school year.  In a time of cash-strapped school districts cutting programs and consolidating classes, Rivermont Collegiate continues to provide students with a comprehensive education.  Rivermont, located in Bettendorf, is the Quad Cities' only private, independent, nonsectarian college-prep school for students in preschool through twelfth grade.

At Rivermont, small class sizes, individualized attention, and high academic standards result in students who nourish personal talents and passions while gaining a critical foundation to life and learning.  Rivermont infuses a traditional curriculum with innovative ideas and technology, as well as the freedom to take risks in academics, leadership, athletics, arts, and service.  Foreign language instruction begins in kindergarten and individualized college counseling begins in the ninth grade.  100% of Rivermont graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities and over 90% earn four-year renewable college merit scholarships.

What are you waiting for?  Come explore Rivermont Collegiate at our Summer Open House on Thursday, June 9th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. This casual event gives families the opportunity to tour campus and explore our philosophy and programs.  Rivermont Collegiate is located at 1821 Sunset Drive in Bettendorf, directly off 18th street behind K&K Hardware.  No appointment necessary!  Join us!

Congratulations to Rivermont Collegiate junior Pavane Gorrepati, who has received the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award!  This prestigious award is a project-based scholarship for Iowa high school juniors and is unique in the fact that grades, test scores, essays, and financial need are NOT evaluated.  Students are selected on the basis of submitted project proposals of their own choosing and design.  Pavane's outstanding proposal, Sending Seeds Overseas, has earned her a chance at a $5,000 scholarship.  Pavane will complete her project before October, when she will present it at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum in West Branch, IA along with 14 other student finalists.  At that time, each finalist will receive $1,000 for participating in the program and a committee of accomplished Iowans will choose three students to win $5,000 college scholarships.

The award honors Iowa native and 31st president Herbert Hoover - the name is taken from his "On the Uncommon Man" speech.  As part of the program, Pavane will spend a weekend in West Branch in June learning about President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover, including special tours of the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum and the Hoover National Historic Site.  This weekend offers finalists a framework to understand the inspiration for the award and to meet other student finalists.

In addition to being an Uncommon Student, Pavane was a Senior Champion at the 2010 Eastern Iowa Science & Engineering Fair (EISEF) for her project Warning about Warming: A Global Problem with a Fuel Cell Solution and presented fuel cell projects at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in both 2009 and 2010.  She is a recipient of a Borlaug-Ruan International Internship, which will take her to the China National Hybrid Rice Research & Development Center this summer to conduct research.  In addition, Pavane will travel to the National History Day Competition in Washington, D.C. in June as part of a group performance with fellow Rivermont juniors Joann Weeks, Meghana Pagadala, and Christine Mbakwe.

Though Pavane is the recipient of many honors, the Uncommon Student is unique in that it encourages young Iowans to invest their talents in their schools, communities, and beyond - to display the skills and talents that Herbert Hoover demonstrated to spot a problem, devise a solution, and make changes when needed.  In the words of a parent of an Uncommon Student, "The Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student project pushed my daughter out of her comfort zone and challenged her to pursue a project she could get excited about.  The Hoover project required her to test her passion and commitment, and to share it with strangers."  In the words of a past Uncommon Student, "This scholarship does not grade you on your grades, test scores, or essays - just the ability to put your mind to completing something.  Explore your interests or seek what needs change.  The project can be anything you are interested in.  Think big!"

Congratulations to Rivermont Collegiate junior Pavane Gorrepati, who has received a Borlaug-Ruan International Internship!  This prestigious internship provides an all-expenses-paid, eight-week hands-on experiencing working with world-renowned scientists and policymakers at research centers around the world.  The internship is a program of The World Food Prize, which, since 1986, has honored individuals who have made vital contributions to improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food throughout the world.  The unique opportunity is different from other study abroad internships in that students participate in original research projects with acclaimed scientists, while getting a firsthand view of pressing food security issues and nutritional problems in poverty-stricken areas of the developing world.  Since 1998, over 140 interns have traveled to Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kenya, Peru, and the Philippines - to name a few!

Pavane will be at the China National Hybrid Rice Research & Development Center (CNHRRDC) in Changsha, China.  Pavane will spend time in the lab, as well as days or weeks at a time in the field, conducting research and gathering data.  Upon return, Pavane will submit a research report and reflection paper documenting her personal experience and the outcome of her research project.

Pavane's many science awards include Champion rankings at the 2009 and 2010 Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fairs for projects on alternative energy, winning her trips to the International Science and Engineering Fairs in Nevada in May 2009 and California in May 2010.  Pavane's talents extend beyond the scientific realm - she recently earned a trip to the National History Day Competition in Washington, D.C. this summer with a performance about the Nuremburg Trials with fellow Rivermont students Joann Weeks, Meghana Pagadala, and Christine Mbakwe.  Pavane is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Rivermont Environmental Club, and intends to devote her life to the study of alternative energy.

The World Food Prize was conceived by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, recipient of the 1970 Nobel Peace Price.  In 1990, Des Moines businessman and philanthropist John Ruan assumed sponsorship of The Prize and established The World Food Prize Foundation, located in Des Moines, IA.  For additional information on The World Food Prize and the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship, visit www.worldfoodprize.org.

The love of reading takes center stage next month with Get Caught Reading Month, part of a nation-wide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read!  Launched in 1999, the Get Caught Reading Campaign is promoted throughout the year by the Association of American Publishers.  Some of the nation's most celebrated public figures, celebrities, and beloved characters have championed the campaign with their visions of getting caught reading - from Laura Bush to Rosie O'Donnell to Clifford the Big Red Dog!

Research shows that the development of literacy skills through early experiences with books and stories is critically linked to a child's success in learning to read and overall success in school, yet fewer than half of young children in the U.S. are read to daily.  Research shows that children who aren't fluent readers by the end of third grade may never catch up to their peers.  Early reading experiences are recognized as being of such importance that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends pediatricians prescribe reading activities along with other instructions given to parents at well-child visits.

Get Caught Reading Month is a terrific opportunity to give thought to the role of books and literacy in your child's life.  Rivermont Collegiate prepares young children to read by laying a strong foundation in oral and written experiences prior to kindergarten.  In preschool and junior kindergarten, lessons in Open Court Reading present rich language experiences through fingerplays, rhymes, songs, and poems.  At Rivermont, all first grade students read chapter books by the end of the year.  As students move into the Middle and Upper Schools (grades 6-12), they are challenged daily to participate in in-depth discussions of texts and understand the relevancy of literature to both individuals and the global community.

What are you waiting for?  Get a head start on your celebration of Get Caught Reading Month by joining us for an Open House to discover Rivermont Collegiate!  No appointment required - drop in Thursday, April 28th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to tour campus and explore our curriculum and programs.  Celebrate Get Caught Reading Month by sharing the love of the written word with a child you know - and explore what Rivermont has to offer your young scholar.
