Circuit boards, hard drives, and cell phones - Oh, my!  In honor of Earth Week, students in the Rivermont Collegiate Environmental Club are hosting an E-Waste Recycling Drive.  Students have collaborated with the cities of Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, and Moline to bring bins to the Rivermont campus to collect e-waste free of charge for Rivermont students and their families, as well as faculty and staff.  Items will be collected all week, beginning Monday, April 18th through Friday, April 22nd.  Items that can be recycled include cameras, CD players, computers, copiers, printers, DVD players, keyboards, printers, televisions, cell phones, and more.  Students in the Environmental Club have created a fantastic opportunity for members of their school community to dispose of e-waste responsibly, easily, and free of charge!  What a terrific (and effective) way to observe Earth Week!

E-waste is a major environmental concern because it contains lead, mercury, nickel, chromium, lithium, and numerous other hazardous materials that may be released into the environment if not properly managed.  E-waste also contains valuable resources such as glass, scrap metal, wire, circuit boards, and fluorescent tubes.  When equipment is thrown away, these valuable resources cannot be recovered and additional pollution is generated to manufacture new products of virgin materials.  Reclaiming these materials helps save both our landfills and our environment.

How can I dispose of e-waste if I'm not a member of the Rivermont Community?

The Waste Commission of Scott County's Electronic Demanufacturing Facility (EDF), located at 1048 East 59th Street in Davenport, provides residents and businesses an environmentally sound disposal option for e-waste.  All material is demanufactured and, to ensure data security, is not refurbished or reused.

Ø      Bettendorf and Davenport residents that receive curbside collection can put e-waste out as bulky waste on recycling day.  This is a service included in the solid waste fee and no call-ins or appointments are required.  E-waste collected at the curb is delivered to the EDF.

Ø      Residents of Scott County can bring e-waste to the facility Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Residential e-waste from Scott County residents is charged at 20 cents per pound for TVs, monitors, and laptops, with all other e-waste being free of charge.

Ø      Rock Island County residents can bring e-waste to the facility Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for no charge with a valid Rock Island County address.  Rock Island County Waste Management Agency covers the cost of processing and disposal for its residents.

The iPads are coming!  Sync up and prepare for iRivermont!  Rivermont Collegiate is excited to announce that the Class of 2015 will be participating in a technology pilot program.  Each rising freshman at Rivermont for the 2011-12 academic year will be issued an Apple iPad!

The Apple iPad is a revolutionary device that keeps the classroom at students' fingertips.  The freshman class at Rivermont will be able to download textbooks to their iPads and use the expansive onscreen keyboard to collect their thoughts, easily jotting down notes in class.  A vivid, high-resolution screen will allow students to create stunning presentations, while easy-to-use formatting and layout tools will result in brilliant documents.  The Rivermont freshman class will be expected to be beautifully organized, with an interactive calendar to track assignments, deadlines, and practices.  With more than 350,000 apps available on the App Store, students will have access to thousands of educational apps - from iThesaurus to interactive periodic tables.

In the Rivermont style of infusing traditional curriculum with innovative ideas and technology, it is our hope that the entire Rivermont Middle and Upper School (grades 6-12) will move into iPads in the near future.  As schools across the country are getting their feet wet implementing the iPad, the technology is being touted as magical - poised to change the learning landscape as we know it.  Rivermont Collegiate is thrilled to be a leader in this educational technology, while also lightening backpacks and reducing paper consumption!

Rivermont Collegiate, located in Bettendorf, is the Quad Cities' only independent, non-sectarian, multicultural college prep school for students in preschool through twelfth grade.  Rivermont turns traditional education inside out, encouraging students to explore unique opportunities, programs, and experiences.  Small class sizes and dedicated faculty encourage critical thinking, curiosity, and discipline and result in students who move on to the country's finest colleges and universities, with a strong foundation for life and learning.

Rivermont Collegiate provides an academically rigorous yet nurturing environment, where students develop skills and attitudes that provide the foundation for future learning.  Our gifted faculty provides students with the tools to pursue knowledge independently and take intellectual and artistic risks, while small class sizes ensure each child receives direction and feedback.  Come explore our approach!

Qualify for scholarships.  Earn college credit and stand out in the college admissions process.  Be more likely to graduate from college in four years, while still having the time and flexibility to double major or study abroad.  With these benefits, it's no wonder AP (Advanced Placement) courses and exams have won praise and popularity, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school.  AP has spread to more than 30 subjects, with 1.8 million students taking 3.2 million tests last year.  But many AP courses, particularly in the sciences and history, have been criticized for the overwhelming amount of material and rote memorization needed to prepare for the exam.  That is all about to change.

The College Board, the nonprofit organization that owns the AP exams, is revamping courses and exams, reducing the amount of material students need to know for exams and focusing on large concepts and exploring topics in more depth.  Revisions are aimed at reducing memorization and fostering analytical thinking.  In AP Biology, for example, a host of creative, hands-on experiments are replacing the predictable "dirty dozen" - a nickname for the basic lab exercises recommend by the College Board.  In addition, the new AP Biology exam cut the number of multiple-choice questions nearly in half and more than doubled the number of free-response questions.  The idea behind this new direction is that quality learning takes place when students spend more time going into greater depth on fewer topics, increasing critical thinking and knowledge application.  "We really believe that the new AP needs to be anchored in a curriculum that focuses on what students need to be able to do with their knowledge," says Trevor Packer, Vice President of the College Board.   AP will implement revised courses in AP French Language and Culture, AP German Language and Culture, and AP World History in the 2011-12 academic year, and revised courses in AP Biology, AP Latin, and AP Spanish Literature and Culture in the 2012-13 academic year.  AP U.S. History will follow in 2013-14.

Rivermont Collegiate, the Quad Cities' only private, independent, nonsectarian college prep school, offers the highest availability of AP classes for its students in the state of Iowa.  From preschool through twelfth grade, Rivermont strives to prepare students who are grounded in the basics, yet able to think analytically and creatively.  Rivermont believes students learn by doing, and faculty bring the world into the classroom through hands-on project learning and stimulating class settings, where curiosity and critical thinking are encouraged.

What are you waiting for?  Explore the Rivermont approach to learning!  Join us for Open Tours the first Tuesday of every month.  The next Open Tour will be held Tuesday, March 1st from 8:30-10:00 a.m.  No appointment necessary!  Drop in to explore our philosophy and curriculum, take a tour of campus, and see our teachers in action.  Rivermont Collegiate is located at 1821 Sunset Drive, directly off 18th Street behind K&K Hardware in Bettendorf.

On January 23rd - 29th, 2011, school choice advocates across the nation will unite to shine a spotlight on effective education options for every child.  National School Choice Week was created to raise awareness about all forms of educational choice, including charter schools, independent schools, magnet schools, and home schooling, and the need for an effective educational system that offers parents the freedom to choose their children's education.  Over 150 organizations, leading policymakers, and opinion leaders are "all in" for this mission, including The Center for Education Reform, American Federation for Children, Alliance for School Choice, Children's Scholarship Fund, Association of American Educators, Foundation for Excellence in Education, and many more.  School Choice Week isn't about raising one education model above others or doing away with public schools, but about reforming the system so that every parent has the power to choose the education that fits their individual child.

Educational alternatives give parents the opportunity to choose a setting that will work best for their children, resulting in an education that will pay dividends for a lifetime.  The best way to find the right fit for your child is to visit a variety of schools, talk with admission representatives and faculty, take a school tour, and even take your child to a sporting event, school play, or science fair to experience extracurricular options and get a feel for the school climate.  Most importantly, ask questions!  Inquire about the curriculum, how quality and achievement are measured, student-to-teacher ratio, faculty teaching experience, availability of independent study and accelerated classes, and school accreditation.

How will you observe this week of focused attention on education alternatives?  We suggest you explore the options in your community!  Join us for an Open House at Rivermont Collegiate, on Thursday, January 27th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Rivermont is the Quad Cities' only private, independent, nonsectarian college-prep school, serving students in preschool through twelfth grade.  At Rivermont, a challenging curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and knowledge application and small class sizes ensure focused attention and individualized instruction.  What are you waiting for?  Drop in to explore our philosophy and curriculum, take a tour of campus, and get answers to all your questions about Rivermont!
