KennethWayne Thompson Named Director of the Davenport Public Library

The Davenport Public Library is proud to announce KennethWayne Thompson as its new director.   Mr. Thompson is from Georgia and is honored to be selected as the library's new director.  Mr. Thompson says, "I am excited about my role as Library Director of the Davenport Public Library and look forward to becoming actively involved in the community. The citizens of Davenport deserve the best library system possible and that will always be my focus. Leading such a great library system is a dream come true!" 

KennethWayne is expected to start as the library's director the beginning of April, until that time, Amy Groskopf, Associate Director for Resource Services will continue as interim director.

The library staff and board were very happy to have three strong candidates interview for the position in January and are eager to have KennethWayne as their new director.  The candidates were chosen by the search firm Keister & Associates, after the announcement of LaWanda Roudebush's retirement.  LaWanda's last day was January 31, 2013.

Maggie Brown Live in Concert at DPL!

Don't miss the chance to see blues and jazz singer Maggie Brown live in concert at the Davenport Public Library! She will be performing at the Eastern Avenue Branch (6000 Eastern Avenue) on Monday, November 26 at 6:30 p.m. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Based in Chicago, Maggie Brown is a talented singer and performer who infuses her music with history and storytelling. She describes her style as "edutainment" and strives to use music to educate and uplift people. This performance is being sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Blues Society. USPTO Names the Davenport Public Library to Support Intellectual Property Information Needs of Inventors and Entrepreneurs

First Center Focused on Electronic Access and Training for Patent and Trademark Information in the Nation

WASHINGTON - The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today announced the designation of Iowa's Davenport Public Library as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC). As the 81st library in the nationwide network, Davenport marks Iowa's return to the PTRC program and serves as the first center in the nation geared away from the "paper depository" concept towards electronic access and training for patent and trademark information.

Replacing the State Library of Iowa, the former PTRC for the state, the Davenport Public Library will provide a place for Iowans to access patent and trademark information with the help of USPTO trained librarians.  USPTO's Patent and Trademark Resource Center - formerly known as the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Program (PTDL) - is a nationwide network of public, state, special and academic libraries authorized to disseminate patent and trademark information and to support inventors, intellectual property attorneys/agents, business people, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, historians and the general public who are not able to come to USPTO's offices in Alexandria, Virginia. 

Services at the libraries are free and include assistance in using patent and trademark information, training on USPTO databases and hosting public seminars on intellectual property topics for novice and experienced innovators.  A list of the current PTRC libraries can be found on the USPTO website atwww.uspto.gov/go/ptdl.

The all electronic Patent and Trademark Resource Center will open to the public and celebrate its grand opening on Thursday, September 8, 2011.  There will be a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. at the entrance to the Main Library, 321 Main Street. Mayor Bill Gluba, the Quad-Cities Chamber of Commerce, and other elected officials will be on hand to celebrate the opening.  Training with Tom Turner from the USPTO will be from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Members of a panel of local resources who work specifically in the patent, trademark and intellectual properties realm will begin at 2 p.m.  If you wish to participate in the training on Thursday, September 8, please R.S.V.P. to Karen Neal at 563.326.7841.

The Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) program began in 1871 when federal law first provided for the distribution of printed patents to libraries for use by the public. Eastern Avenue Library receives a Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating!

This has just been announced by the U. S. Green Building Council, and we are thrilled that the building has been recognized.  LEED is the nation's preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.

"Davenport Public Library Eastern Avenue Branch's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U. S. Green Building Council.  "The urgency of USGBC's mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and the Eastern Avenue Branch serves a prime example with just how much we can accomplish."

The Eastern Avenue Branch Library achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water, and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies.  By using less energy and water, LEED certified buildings save money for families, businesses, and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers, and the larger community.

The Eastern Avenue Branch Library has received four prominent awards for its construction, design and green building strategies.   Those awards are: named as a New Landmark Library by Library Journal, a national award; Midwest Construction Award for Cultural Buildings for the Midwest Region; Master Builders of Iowa Award; and the Lorraine D. Wright Award of Excellence from the National Association of Women In Construction, Quad-Cities Chapter.

The primary architect for the building was Engberg Anderson, Inc. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Joe Huberty as the primary architect, Debra Sider, Project Manager, and Shaun Kelly, who submitted the project to the US Green Building Council.  Bush Construction, Davenport, Iowa, was the general contractor.  A.J. Loss is President, Rob Davis is Project Manager, and Ryan Schertz is Project Superintendent. Mark Blackwood of River Place Technologies is the Commissioning Agent for the project.   All of these plus the Library Board of Trustees Buildings and Grounds Committee chaired by Greg Lundgren; the City's Project Manager, Greg Albansoder; and library staff spent many hours coordinating the project.

"We are pleased to have the Eastern Avenue Branch Project recognized as such an outstanding project for our Davenport community", said Library Director, LaWanda Roudebush.
