Bettendorf – Come in costume and celebrate the fall season! On Sunday, October 27, from noon - 5:00 PM the Family Museum's annual event, Scarecrow Shenanigans, returns this year with even more kooky, spooky, and ooky activities. Almost every gallery and room in the Museum will be filled with art activities, games, and science projects.

In the Museum's Great Hall, visitors will construct haunted houses, get their faces painted, play Halloween games, and grab a quick snack. The Family Museum Gallery will get a spooky make-over that is not for the faint of heart - parents must give the OK for kids to enter. In our dance studios, guests can watch the Family Museum Dance Company perform, decorate a mini pumpkin, and take a turn on the "Skary-Oke" stage. Visitors are also invited upstairs to make slime out of common household items, make a skeleton craft, and dissect real eyeballs. And new this year: there will be a child-size train offering rides for children and adults in our parking lot.

Tickets are $3.00 for Family Museum members and $8.00 each for the general public.  Tickets are available now.  Everyone must have a ticket to enter - even Family Museum members. For more information please call (563) 344-4106, or visit www.familymuseum.org.  Scarecrow Shenanigans is sponsored by The Family Credit Union.

Bettendorf – On Friday, February 15, 2013, from 5:30-7:30 pm, the Family Museum will host a grand opening of Fox Hollow, the Town Square and Farm exhibit gallery, for Family Museum members and VIP guests. This invitation-only event celebrates the completion of Phase II of a $1.3 million renovation. Members of the media are welcome to attend, and they may bring members of their immediate families if they wish. The exhibit will open to the public on Saturday, February 16.

There will be a ribbon cutting at 5:30 pm sharp with the assistance of our Honorary Mayor of the Day, Payton, age 5. Payton and five other area children were winners of a drawing at the Family Museum to choose a mayor and five ribbon cutters for the VIP event. Mayor and ribbon cutters may be available for interviews prior to gallery opening depending on parent approval. Media is welcome to arrive early.

The Family Museum has completely transformed the Museum galleries with Fox Hollow, a friendly community where visitors can chat with a neighbor, shop for groceries, work in a garden, play in a treehouse, or wave to the mail carrier. Fox Hollow includes familiar features of everyday life, such as park benches, a streetlight, a grocery store, and a fire engine. The new cityscape will include a Post Office, Fire Station, Shoe Store, Ice Cream Stand, Pizza Parlor, Vet Clinic, and Harvest Market. At each location a friendly face greets visitors to tell them a little bit about their job. Penny the Mail Carrier loves to meet people in her community on her mail route, Sal the Pizza Man enjoys making fresh pizza for families, and Farmer George encourages kids to pick produce and help take care of the farm animals.

In the center of the Town Square is a large interactive kinetic sculpture designed and built by KidZibits out of Minneapolis. Guests can maneuver metal balls through the use of hand cranks up to the top of the structure where the balls then travel down ramps, spirals, and curves as the balls roll and ding and hit obstacles.

The majority of the renovation was completed by Exhibit Concepts out of Vandalia, Ohio (near Dayton). A representative will be on hand to answer questions at the opening event.

Fox Hollow encourages children to interact with the environment and to learn through exploration and play. Fox Hollow is a reflection of the Quad City community with its friendly people, bountiful resources, and iconic river way. The Family Museum staff would like to thank the community that inspired Fox Hollow and made this renovation a reality.

This Family Museum renovation has been made possible through the generosity of the following organizations: City of Bettendorf, Scott County Board of Supervisors, State of Iowa - Vision Iowa CAT Grant, Hubbell-Waterman Foundation, Alcoa Foundation, Scott County Regional Authority, Riverboat Development Authority, Modern Woodmen of America, Dorothea LeClair Bequest, Family Museum Foundation, Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, 3M Foundation, Roy J. Bettendorf – On Friday, October 12, 2012, from 5:30-7:00 pm, the Family Museum will host a grand opening of the River and Bridges gallery for Family Museum members and VIP guests. This invitation-only event celebrates the completion of Phase I of a $1.2 million renovation. Media outlets are welcome to attend.

Phase I (of three) includes a 28 foot indoor waterplay table which resembles an actual stretch of the Mississippi River and allows guests to add obstacles and raise or lower water levels as they watch their boat make the journey down the river. Visitors will play on three new bridge structures designed to look and feel like the I-74 Bridge, the Arsenal Bridge, and the Centennial Bridge. The gallery brings the bridges of the Quad Cities into the Family Museum and puts children and families into, onto, and over these magnificent structures. Through sounds, games, and hands-on building materials, these bridges become accessible to people of all ages. The Family Museum Offers a Place for Buyers and Sellers to Meet

Bettendorf – Closets filled with toys and games. Beds hiding sports equipment and puzzles. Kids acquire mountains of stuff through the years, and the Family Museum offers a perfect place to sell these under-used and forgotten items: the annual Young Entrepreneur's Market. This year the Market will be held on Saturday, June 9 from 8:30-11:30 AM. It's free to shop, but sellers must be pre-paid and pre-registered by Wednesday, June 6.

This event is designed to teach young entrepreneurs about sales, marketing, and merchandising. Participants are welcome to sell their artwork, crafts, toys, sports equipment, clothing, costumes, or any other gently used items at this popular "garage" sale. This is a great opportunity for kids to clean out their toy boxes, empty their closets, and sell the things they no longer play with or have outgrown. It's also a great venue for kids to sell crafts, artwork, and other handmade items.

The Young Entrepreneur's Market is open to all youth ages 5-14. Sellers must be accompanied by an adult. Each parking space is $10. Participants must be pre-registered by Wednesday, June 6 to attend. For more information or to reserve a space, call Julie Klein at (563) 344-4170.
