Scott County Recorder Rita Vargas is asking residents to be cautious if they receive a piece of mail asking them if they want a copy of their deed and property assessment. Recorder's offices across the state have received phone calls from concerned citizens about letters they received saying there was "deed activity recorded in public record" and that they should obtain a "current property grant deed and assessment". The company is charging $83 for the service. The notice is designed to cause a homeowner to believe there has been a recently recorded document, which is often not accurate. Anyone receiving this notice should not be alarmed or feel that it is necessary to respond to it. A copy of a deed can be obtained by searching the records at the Recorder's Office and requesting a copy which generally cost less than a dollar in copy fees.
