MINNEAPOLIS - As people brace for the heat wave that is forecasted to blanket the U.S. this week, doctors from BluePearl Veterinary Partners are urging pet owners to take precautions for their pets during the sweltering days ahead.

BluePearl doctors recommend these simple steps to help prevent your pet from taking a trip to the emergency room:

•       Avoid physical activity during the heat of the day; keep exercise to the cooler mornings and evenings.
•       Ensure your pet has access to plenty of water throughout the day and during times of exercise.
•       Spray your pet down with room temperature or cool water, but never ice water. Ice cold water causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin and heat can't escape the body properly, which actually makes heat exhaustion symptoms worse.
•       Make sure pets are kept inside of air-conditioned spaces to avoid excess exposure to heat.
•       When walking or jogging with your pet, try to avoid asphalt as your pet's paw pads can burn. Instead, stick to concrete, dirt or grass, as those surfaces are less hot.
•       Never leave your pet in a car unattended, even with the air conditioning running. If the air conditioning fails, your pet could easily over-heat in as little as a few minutes.
•       Don't give sports drinks or electrolyte supplements to pets. Dogs cool off by panting and they do not sweat like people. Supplements like sports drinks can actually harm animals and make pets sick.

Most importantly, be familiar with your pet and know when they aren't acting right. Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and dark red gums are all signs of heat related distress. If your pet is panting uncontrollably or collapses, take the animal to your veterinarian or nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

CHICAGO - Doctors from BluePearl Veterinary Partners are urging people to stop using and return or discard certain Natura Pet Products food and treats after the company issued another recall due to potential Salmonella contamination Tuesday.

On March 18, the company issued a voluntary recall due to the presence of salmonella being found during routine testing performed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

On March 29, the company issued an expansion of their original recall citing the same reason as before and adding that the Georgia Department of Agriculture had also confirmed the presence of Salmonella.

On April 19, the company issued a further expansion of the original recall stating the same reasons as before and adding that this was being done out of an abundance of caution.

Most recently, on Tuesday, Natura Pet Products issued a press release recalling specific lots of dry pet food citing the potential for the food to be contaminated with Salmonella, after routine testing performed by the Food and Drug Administration tested positive for Salmonella.

The most current release states, "Natura is voluntarily recalling all products with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014."
According to the release, the affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States and Canada. No canned wet food is affected by this announcement.
People who have the potentially contaminated product should discard it immediately and stop handling it as it poses a risk to humans as well.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Common symptoms of salmonella in pets include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort.

"Any time you notice your pet is not acting right, you should take him or her to your family veterinarian as soon as possible," said Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl. "If it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at any one of our locations."

MINNEAPOLIS - Doctors from BluePearl Veterinary Partners referral medicine hospitals here are encouraging people to also remember their pets during National Poison Prevention Week.

National Poison Prevention Week started Sunday and runs through Saturday. The purpose is to create awareness and prevent injury or death due to poisoning.

"While many precautions are taken to prevent humans from being exposed to poisons, it is equally important to remember to take precautions for pets," said Dr. Annie Wright, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care medicine with BluePearl here. "A good way to do this is to know what types of items can be toxic to pets."

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the top 10 pet toxins of 2012 were:

1.      Prescription human medications
2.      Insecticides
3.      Over-the-counter human medications
4.      Veterinary products and medications
5.      Household products
6.      People food
7.      Chocolate
8.      Plants
9.      Rodenticides
10.     Lawn and garden products

Additionally, garlic, grapes, macadamia nuts, onions, raisins, the sugar substitute xylitol, and raw or undercooked food can create major problems for pets.

While rodenticides may not be intended for pets, they are designed to attract animals. Should pets encounter these indiscriminate poisons, the condition is life-threatening and the pet must be treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Furthermore, with Easter just around the corner, it's important to recognize that lilies are deadly to cats.

Antifreeze is another toxic substance pets are often attracted to. If ingested, pets can almost certainly die if the condition is left untreated.

If a pet does ingest something that may be toxic, make sure to bring the label or packaging of the substance with you to your veterinarian. For example, there are two different types of rodenticides with two different forms of treatment. It's important for veterinarians to know what substance they are treating for.

"Most importantly, if you believe your pet has gotten into something that may be poisonous, get him or her to your veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian immediately," said Wright. "Time can ultimately be the difference between life and death."
