The Mississippi Valley Blues Society invites the public to attend a FUNraiser /Trivia Night on Thursday, January 15th at the River Music Experience, 129 Main Street, Davenport, IA. Doors for competitors and spectators open at 6:30pm, and competition begins at 7:00pm.  Proceeds from the event will go to defray expenses for two Quad-Cities groups chosen to attend the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN January 20-24:  The Mercury Brothers will represent the entire state of Iowa at the competition, and Sarah Hanson and Jesse Barger will participate in the International Youth Showcase.

Those wishing to test their music trivia knowledge can enter the competition by registering their team of 5 at the door for $75. Or, there is a $20 buy-in for each individual member that would like to attend. Individuals are encouraged to participate even if they do not have a team. Donations also will be accepted at the door. Paid admission will include trivia, prizes, live music, and complimentary hors d'oeuvres.

The 2015 International Blues Challenge, held in downtown Memphis in the Beale Street Historic District, marks 31 years of blues musicians from around the world competing for cash, prizes, and industry recognition. The world's largest gathering of blues acts represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its  affiliated organizations for blues bands, solo/duo blues acts, and youth ready to take their acts to the international stage.

As affiliates of the Blues Foundation, The Mississippi Valley Blues Society (Quad Cities) and Central Iowa Blues Society (Des Moines, IA) are proud to be sending Mercury Brothers to compete in the International Band challenge. They won both the preliminary round and the final round of the Iowa Blues Challenge in the Spring of 2014.   Sarah Hanson (17), and Jesse Barger (16) were chosen to represent the Mississippi Valley Blues Society in the International Youth Showcase by exhibiting exceptional artistry and dedication to playing the blues during the Iowa Blues Challenge Solo/Duo Competition.

Trivia questions will be selected from various versions of music history books, and will combine general music content with some exclusively blues subjects. Sample questions: "Which 'King of the Blues' came from Texas?"  "Which Chuck Berry tune did The Beach Boys steal for their worldwide hit 'Surfin' USA'?"

Trivia Night is fun competition and entertainment for the whole family.  If you are not a "Music Wisenheimer" you are still welcome to come to observe and cheer on your favorite team! All proceeds for the MVBS Trivia Night will go towards the Mercury Brothers and Sarah/Jesse for IBC expenses, and are tax deductible.

On September 26th, Davenport's QC Theatre Workshop will hold its first trivia night fundraiser. The evening will feature trivia, raffles, and a silent auction. Doors will open at 6:30pm, and the trivia will begin at 7:00pm. Tables of eight are $80 (or $10 per person). Snacks and sodas will be available, and guests are invited to bring their own refreshments.

Registration is now open, and will continue through the night of the event. Teams can reserve their tables by contacting the QC Theatre Workshop at info@qctheatreworkshop.org or 563-650-2396.

The QC Theatre Workshop began in August of 2012 with acclaimed performances of John Logan's RED, and is currently presenting its ninth production, the comedy 'Art' by Yasmina Reza.

Since its inception, the Workshop has operated entirely under the unique and innovative "Pay What It's Worth" ticket pricing policy, where audience members are invited to set their own ticket prices after each performance, based on what the show was worth to them. This policy has proven very successful, allowing the Workshop to provide live theatre without financial barriers to everyone in the Quad Cities.

In the spring of this year, the Workshop received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, and is beginning its fundraising activities with the fall trivia night. With sights set on the future, the theatre's Board of Directors and Artistic Director Tyson Danner have high hopes for the growing company.

"The support we have received so far has been incredible," says Danner. "We are constantly striving to increase both the quality and number of our productions, and our fundraising efforts are key to that effort."

"We have been blessed with an incredible Board of Directors with a vast wealth of experience," says Danner. The Workshop's governing body includes:

·         Lora Adams (Director of Marketing & Local Content, WQPT)

·         Jessi Black (Community Arts Director, Quad City Arts)

·         Norm Bower (Development Director, Davenport Schools Foundation)

·         Steve Jobman (Minister of Music, First Presbyterian Church, Davenport; Artistic Director, the Quad-City Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Pops)

·         Dr. Corinne Johnson (Theatre professor, St. Ambrose University)

·         Philip Wm. McKinley (Director, Broadway's The Boy from Oz and Spider Man: Turn off the Dark)

·         Aaron Randolph III (local playwright and composer)

·         Kelly Rundle and Tammy Rundle (local documentary filmmakers).

Davenport, IA-The Quad City Symphony Orchestra and WVIK-Quad Cities NPR are presenting Trio 826, a string trio including QCSO Principal Cellist Hannah Holman, as the fifth installment of their Signature Series. Trio 826 will be performing trios by composers that have a connection to the holocaust, either by being persecuted or helping the resistance. Trio 826 is performing on Sunday, April 13, at 3:00 p.m. at the Tri-City Jewish Center in Rock Island. This performance is presented by the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities.

Trio 826 is comprised of Susanna Klein, violin; Hannah Holman, cello; and Julia Bullard, viola. The program will feature music by Gideon Klein, Hans Krasa, Ernst Krenek, Erno Dohnanyi, and Felix Mendelssohn. Trio 826 will be joined by Dr. Stephen J. Gaies, Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education and Professor of Languages and Literatures at the University of Northern Iowa. The concert will include discussion, reflection, and music. Trio 826 was created in 2011 by three friends to explore ideas for innovation in the performance of classical music.

The members of Trio 826 have vast experience as orchestral and chamber musicians, soloists, and educators. The mission of Trio 826 is to be an agent of change in the classical arena. Their hope is to be curious about their audience, risky in their presentations, and do everything it takes to bring classical music to life. Trio 826 performs new and standard repertoire in a variety of venues, from formal concerts to shows in intimate, informal, and unusual settings.  For 2012, the trio commissioned a work entitled "Soneando" by University of Northern Iowa Faculty Composer Robert Washut.

The Signature Series is presented by WVIK-Quad Cities NPR in collaboration with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and Augustana College. Rebroadcast on WVIK, this versatile and intimate six-concert series features select members of the QCSO and visiting artists from across the nation. Under the artistic direction of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra's Concertmaster Naha Greenholtz, the Signature Series is a testament to the vitality of the classical music community in the Quad Cities.
