Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack recently met with leaders of the Veterans Administration (VA) and told them the concerns he heard firsthand from Iowa's Veterans, military family members, and Veterans service providers.  Last week, Loebsack hosted a series of Veterans Forums across Iowa in order to give Veterans an opportunity to speak with the Congressman and seek assistance from his office.  In a meeting with Ms. Joan Mooney, Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Legislative Affairs and Mr. Danny Pummill, Executive Director, Compensation & Pension Service, Veterans Benefits Administration, Loebsack presented them with a letter to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki of the top concerns he heard from Iowa Veterans, including disability claims, VA health care and job training.  A copy of the letter can be found here.

"Last week, I met with Iowa Veterans, military family members, and Veterans service providers across eastern and southeastern Iowa," Loebsack wrote. "I strongly urge you to take my constituents' concerns into account as you work to improve VA services.  I look forward to continuing to work with you to ensure that every person who has served our nation in uniform receives the care, benefits, and respect they deserve."

This week, two pieces of legislation, which directly impact Veterans and their families, passed the House of Representatives with unanimous bipartisan support.  Loebsack was a strong supporter of both the Veterans COLA and Veterans Skills to Jobs Acts.  The Veterans COLA Act increases the amounts paid for veteran's disability compensation and to their survivors for dependency and indemnity compensation by the same amount as the Social Security cost of living adjustment.  The Veterans Skills to Jobs Act requires federal departments to help Veterans transition to the civilian workforce by taking the skills and experience they acquired through their military service into account when determining what training and certification requirements they must meet for federal licenses.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today $2,763,341 in funding for housing development in Davenport and Iowa City.  The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and HOME program.

"This HUD funding will assist communities in Davenport and Iowa City with providing affordable, quality housing to those who are struggling," said Loebsack. "As someone who grew up in poverty, I believe we need to ensure an adequate safety net is in place for Iowans, particularly those who are getting back on their feet in these difficult economic times.  This funding will provide better opportunities to succeed for many in eastern Iowa, as well as support economic growth and greater prosperity in Iowa communities."

The CDBG program helps develop more viable communities by investing in local economic development projects and expanded economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals.  The HOME program helps to increase the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to fund housing and development initiatives that meet local needs and priorities.

Details of the funding are below:

$1,328,125 - Davenport (CDBG)

$410,918 - Davenport (HOME)

$638,918 - Iowa City (CDBG)

$385,380 - Iowa City (HOME)

Legislation is essential for economic development and job creation

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after the House passed a bipartisan Transportation Authorization Bill.  The current short-term extension was set to expire over the weekend.  The bill passed by a vote of 373-52 and is now headed to the President, which he is expected to sign.

"I am pleased a transportation bill has finally been passed.  While it should have been done before today and cover a longer period of time, this bill will help create much needed jobs in Iowa and give communities the certainty needed to invest in necessary infrastructure improvements and economic development initiatives.

"It is clear to any Iowan who drives a car or truck, rides the rails or flies in an airplane that a long-term highway plan is needed.  A modern, safe and efficient transportation authorization will not only create jobs now for the construction industry - facing a 13.3 percent unemployment rate - but it will also set the table for long-term job creation and economic growth. Even with passage of this bill today, I am going to be pushing for work to start as soon as possible on a longer-term bill that provides greater investment in our infrastructure so our businesses and farmers can compete effectively in the 21st Century global economy."

Loebsack has been urging passage of a long-term transportation bill for a number of years and has brought important Iowa projects to the attention of the President, the Speaker of the House, the Secretary of Transportation, and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Loebsack has worked to highlight important projects to Eastern and Southern Iowa that are in need of adequate funding to move forward.  They include :

  • Highway 100 completion and connection to Interstate 380 in Cedar Rapids
  • Interstate 74 bridge replacement and improvement in the Quad Cities
  • Interstate 80 & 380 ramp and road/lane improvements in and around Coralville and Iowa City north to Cedar Rapids
  • U.S. Highway 30 four-lane paving from Clinton to Cedar Rapids
  • U.S. Highway 34 improvements from Burlington into Illinois
  • U.S. Highway 61 Business improvements in Muscatine
  • U.S. Highway 61 four-lane paving from Muscatine County to Burlington
  • U.S. Highway 63 four-lane paving from Missouri State Line to Ottumwa
  • U.S. Highway 63 four-lane paving from Oskaloosa to Interstate 80 and improved access to U.S. 63 for Pella

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the House passed bipartisan legislation to keep student loan interest rates at 3.4 percent for an additional year.  The House passed the legislation by a vote of 373-52 and it now heads to the President, which he is expected to sign.  An estimated 7.4 million families nationwide and 255,404 Iowa students over the next year will save an average of nearly $1,000 over the life of their loan.

"Today's an important day for Iowa students and their families. I am relieved an agreement has finally been reached to help thousands of Iowa students that doesn't add to the deficit and stops the endless political posturing on this issue.  However, this extension should have occurred long before now, should never have been subject to brinksmanship, and should have provided longer term relief for students. Ensuring any student who chooses to can access an affordable college education to pursue a degree or certificate is one of my highest priorities and I will continue working to keep rates low in the future for Iowa families.

"I grew up in poverty, and I would not have been able to attend college and have such amazing opportunities without student aid. It's long past time that we ensure millions of families aren't harmed by Congress' inaction. Education is critical to securing a good job and economic security for families, and educating our future workforce is key to boosting our economy."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after the Senate passed a 5 year reauthorization of the Farm Bill. The bill was passed on a strong bipartisan vote and is now awaiting the House to move on its version of the legislation.

"Passing a long-term Farm Bill is one of the most important things Congress has to do for Iowa this year.  A new farm bill is critical for farmers to plan for the next planting season and know the lay of the land.  The legislation passed in the Senate goes a long way towards making important reforms and improving the safety net for Iowa farmers.  I urge the House to take action on this critical issue for farmers and communities who are working to feed the nation and boost economic development."

This spring, Loebsack joined a bipartisan group of Members of Congress in urging the House Agriculture Committee to move forward a long-term plan this year.

Washington, D.C. - Congressmen Dave Loebsack (IA-02) and Tom Cole (OK-04) today applauded the Senate passage of language that would strip tax payer funding for this fall's political party conventions. Cole introduced similar legislation in the House and Loebsack recently became the first Democrat to cosponsor the bill.  The Senate attached this language as an amendment to the Farm Bill by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 95-4.

"I applaud the Senate for including language to strip this unnecessary funding.  Both Democrats and Republicans are fully capable of funding their own party conventions and do not need to have this tax payer subsidy," said Loebsack.  "I am hopeful the House will move on Congressman Cole's legislation after such a strong, bipartisan vote in the Senate."

"The overwhelming Senate vote in favor of ending taxpayer funding of political conventions is proof that it's time to terminate this outrageous waste of taxpayer dollars," said Cole. "After 40 straight months of 8 percent unemployment and massive budget deficits, it would be an embarrassment to go into this year's conventions with this policy still in place.  The House has already voted to end funding once.  With passage of the Senate amendment, I'm hopeful that we can build on the growing bipartisan support to sign this commonsense reform into law before another dollar of taxpayer money is wasted on conventions."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that the City of Clinton has received $2.7 million to reconstruct 1.77 miles of Camanche Avenue/Highways 30 & 67.  The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's TIGER grant program.   Loebsack wrote a letter in support of this project and his office also met with the Department of Transportation together with the City to discuss the application.

"This announcement is great news for the people of Clinton and their efforts to revitalize the river area, which brings with it continued economic growth," said Loebsack.  "I had the opportunity to meet with community leaders about the importance of this project and was happy to support the proposal.  I am excited to see the improvements that will be made and the valuable local jobs that will be created."
