Directed by Dr. Grant William Cook III, associate professor of music and director of choral activities, the 49-member choir performed in Vienna, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck.

About the Concert Choir The University of Mount Union Concert Choir is among the oldest collegiate choirs in the United States, tracing its roots to 1896. Open by audition to all students on campus, the Concert Choir comprises musicians from a wide variety of academic disciplines and thus truly represents the University's strong liberal arts foundation. ALLIANCE, OH (05/20/2015)(readMedia)-- Courtney Wachal of Bettendorf, Iowa, graduated Cum Laude with University Honors, Honors in French and Honors in International Studies with a bachelor of arts in French and international studies from the University of Mount Union in May.

More than 480 graduate and undergraduate students participated in the ceremony held Saturday, May 9 in the Peterson Field House of the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

International students and faculty from Bolivia, China, France, Germany, Japan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Vietnam were among those participating in the ceremony, with flags of those nations displayed as part of the graduation regalia.

This year's Commencement speaker was renowned tenor Eduardo Valdes '83, principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera Center in New York City.

ALLIANCE, OH (05/12/2015)(readMedia)-- Courtney Wachal, a senior French and international studies major of Betterdorf, Iowa, presented research on international governments at the Mid-East Honors Association (MEHA) Conference from April 10 to April 12 at Kent State University.

All Mount Union Honors students were invited to submit a proposal to the conference. The students and faculty who attended all had their proposals accepted for presentation.

"The presentations represented research and scholarship completed across the Honors program curriculum, including work done in Honors in the Major theses and projects and work done in University Honors courses, including the Honors FYS and the Honors theme course," said Dr. Nicole L. Johnson, assistant professor of philosophy and religious studies and interdisciplinary liberal studies and co-director of the Honors program at the University of Mount Union.

MEHA is a regional affiliate of the National Collegiate Honors Council, which encourages and supports honors programs in the region. Institutions of higher education from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia are welcome to participate. Approximately 300 students, faculty and administrators presented.

Wachal will present, Why are Countries Willing to be Bound by International Law?.

SCHOLAR Day is a campus-wide event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students.

Three formal presentation sessions and two poster sessions will be included this year, highlighting 47 formal presentations and 26 posters. Presentations will represent 19 departments and programs, including Mount Union's Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (MAEL) and Physician Assistant Studies graduate programs.

This event gives students a chance to share their latest academic research with faculty, staff, students, family, friends and the surrounding communities.

ALLIANCE, OH (02/17/2015)(readMedia)-- Courtney Wachal, a French and International Studies major of Bettendorf, Iowa, will perform with the Concert Choir on Friday evening as part of the University of Mount Union's weekend-long gala celebrating the opening of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

The first half of the evening will consist of instrumentalists - the Repertory Strings, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. The second half will include vocalists - Cantus Femina, Mount Union Concert Choir and musical theatre students performing Cole Porter numbers.

Year of the Arts The Year of the Arts will feature a number of special performances including nationally known groups. The event lineup for the year is being planned by the University's Year of the Arts committee, which includes representatives of the departments of Art, Music and Theatre, along with several others on campus. ALLIANCE, OH (12/12/2014)(readMedia)-- Courtney Wachal, a senior French and international relations major of Bettendorf, IA, performed in the University of Mount Union's Christmas Festival in December in Myers Sanctuary of Dewald Chapel on Mount Union's campus.

The joint performances from the Concert Choir and Cantus Femina showcased two vocal ensembles that are integral components of Mount Union's music program. The annual holiday concert unites choral selections and traditional carols with scripture and readings of the season.
