In November, 1953, the Moline Foundation was established to accept charitable gifts to benefit Moline and the surrounding area. Today, in honor of its 60th Anniversary, the Moline Foundation announces a gift to the community. This announcement is the first in a series of six charitable gifts or activities to be given monthly as a part of "Six Gifts for Our Sixtieth." The last gift announcement will coincide with an anniversary celebration in November, 2013.

The Moline Foundation announces the complete funding of a home to be built in Moline as a part of Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities. A news conference will be held at the groundbreaking of the house building site.

During the news conference, Habitat for Humanity will also be named as the first recipient of the Karen and Tom Getz Award for Excellence. A grant will be given annually to non-profit organizations in the Quad Cities that promote community service and have values consistent with those of the Getz's. The award will also honor quality non-profit leadership in civic and community projects.

The Karen and Tom Getz Award for Excellence was established in 2012 with a gift from the estate of Tom and Karen Getz, noted community leaders and philanthropists in the Quad Cities. Karen Getz, who served for eight years on the Moline Foundation Board, died in October, 2007. Tom Getz, who established a memorial fund to honor his wife and served on a grant making committee for the Moline Foundation, died in January, 2012.

Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities is a nonprofit Christian housing organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Habitat builds simple, decent, affordable housing to eliminating poverty housing. Habitat builds simple, decent, affordable housing for low income, working families. Founded in 1993, HFHQC has made the dream of home ownership possible for 76 local families.

The Moline Foundation awarded almost $20,000.00 in scholarships to 20 college-bound students this spring. The following scholarships were awarded:

Dolores A. Hulse-DiIulio Scholarship: Tracy Pollock, Moline High School, $1,000.00. The scholarship provides funds to a deserving female student graduating from Moline High School who plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, engineering or pre-medicine. Pollock plans to attend Loyola University, Chicago, IL to pursue a degree in Chemistry. Hulse-DiIulio was a chemistry teacher at Moline High School for 36 years, retiring in 1994.

Lee Womack Memorial Scholarship: Brandon Sanchez, Moline High School, $1,000.00. The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate who plans to obtain a degree in education. Sanchez plans to study History at Carthage College, Kenosha, WI. The scholarship was established by Womack's wife, Peggy and the Lee Womack Memorial Golf Outing Steering Committee. Annually since his death, a golf outing has been held in his memory to raise funds for a local charity. In 2004, the scholarship fund was established and is now administered by the Moline Foundation.

Moline High School Class of '59: Aubrey Foulk and Abigail Ryser, both graduates of Moline High School, $1,000.00 each. Foulk plans to major in Environmental Science at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. Ryser plans to major in Biology/Pre-Medicine at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. The fund was established by the Class of '59 as a way to commemorate their 50th class reunion. Funds are raised by class member and volunteers through various fundraisers.

Maggie Webb Scholarship: Alejandro Raya, Moline High School, $1,500.00. Raya plans to major in Acting at Illinois State University, Normal, IL. The fund was established as a memorial to Maggie Webb, a 2001 graduate of Moline High School who was killed in December 2007 in a mass shooting at an Omaha Mall.

Clem T. Hanson Scholarship: Karim Hosameldin, Amanda Johnson and Brandon Sanchez, all graduates of Moline High School, $1,500.00 annually for the next four years. Hosameldin plans to major in Civil Engineering at Bradley University, Peoria, IL. Johnson plans to major in Deaf Education/Sign Language Interpretation at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, IL. and Sanchez plans to major in History at Carthage College, Kenosha, WI. The fund was established through the generosity of Clem T. Hanson (1901-1985), a former Moline businessman and community leader.

DARE Scholarship: Becky Lankford, Aubrey Foulk and Jared Larson , $1,000.00. . The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate based on academic merit, good citizenship, attendance, and active involvement in school and community. Lankford plans to major in Materials Engineering at University of IL, Champaign-Urbana, IL. Foulk plans to major in Environmental Science at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Larson plans to attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. The DARE scholarship is based upon the principles of the former DARE anti-drugs program in Moline-Coal Valley elementary schools.

Lee McAllister Scholarship: Taylor VanHyfte and Amanda Johnson, $1,000.00 each. The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate planning to major in education. VanHyfte plans to major in Psychology at BlackHawk College, Moline, IL and Johnson plans to major in Deaf Education/Sign Language Interpretation at MacMurray Colllege, Jacksonville, IL. This scholarship was established in memory of Lee McAllister who taught in the Moline Schools from 1948 to 1981.

Stan Woods Scholarship: Allison Condit, $1,000.00. The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate based on community involvement and leadership and academic achievement. Condit is majoring in American Sign Language Interpreting at Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. This scholarship was established in memory of Stan Woods who was a teacher, guidance counselor and dean of students in Moline School District No. 40. Former students, co-workers, parents, and the community have contributed to the Woods Scholarship Fund.

Srikanth Yerra Scholarship: Karim Hosameldin, $500.00. This scholarship provides funds to a Moline School District graduate or community college student based on financial need and potential for future personal achievement. Hosameldin is majoring in Civil Engineering at Bradley University, Peoria, IL. The family established this scholarship in memory of Srikanth Yerra, a 2005 graduate of Moline High School.

Moline Kiwanis Scholarship: Aubrey Foulk, Michael J. Ryan and Becky Lankford, $1,000.00 each. Foulk plans to major in Environmental Science at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Thirteen Moline elementary school students have been chosen to receive an award from the Hazel F. Van Arsdale Memorial Scholarship Fund administered through The Moline Foundation.

The 13 elementary students are: Mia Burrill, Madison Rhea, Adriana Hernandez, Nicole Ellis, Derek Burgin, Carissa Gonzalez, Kate Schaechter, Madelaine Jacobs, Manuela Chavez, Kayla Veto, Allison Van, Izabel Jernigan and Lillian Driscoll.

The fund was started in honor and memory of Hazel F. Van Arsdale to perpetuate the importance of music in elementary and secondary education. The fund supports two types of annual awards. One award is given to selected elementary students, and one scholarship is given to a high school senior. The 13 elementary students were chosen by an individual school committee made up of teachers and music professionals through The Moline Foundation.

Hazel Van Arsdale was a public school teacher for 36 years. She was known for her strict, but fun, manner of bringing music into the classroom. She made sure all of her students knew every verse of all of our patriotic hymns, and wanted them to strengthen their music interest beyond elementary school. A fund was established and is now administered through The Moline Foundation's scholarship program.

Moline, IL - Members of the Moline Rotary Club donated 370 mittens, scarves and hats to help keep children in the Moline School District warm during the coming winter months. These items will be donated to ten Moline Elementary Schools for use by students who do not have warm weather attire or forget theirs at home.

"Moline Rotarians continue to give back to the community through programs such as Warm Hands from Kind Hearts," stated Randy Sovey, President of Moline Rotary. "I appreciate the generosity of Moline Rotarians to help make sure each Moline School District student can stay warm this winter".

2012 marks the 3rd Annual Warm Hands from Kind Hearts initiative within Moline Rotary. The Moline Rotary Community Needs Committee continuously identifies additional opportunities to impact the citizens within the city of Moline and the Rock Island County area. "Moline Rotary and its 130 members will mark its 100th anniversary of service to the community in 2014," said Sovey. The club supports numerous service projects in the Quad Cities and through Rotary International."

Moline Rotarians will deliver the collected items to the Moline Schools the week of December 3. The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Representatives of the East Moline Foundation announced a new program this week to benefit the citizens of East Moline and the surrounding area.

Chairman of the East Moline Foundation, Doug Reynolds said donors who give $500 or more to the East Moline Foundation will have an engraved plaque and tree planted in their honor. Gifts can also be made to honor the memory of a loved one. The trees will be planted throughout East Moline.

Mr. Reynolds also noted that East Moline Mayor John Thodos is kicking off the initiative with a Mayor's Challenge Fund. He is asking current and past city and local elected officials to join him in this program to support the people of East Moline. The first plaque and tree were planted near the Quarter Visitor's Center in East Moline In celebration of their one year anniversary, the East Moline Foundation also announce that they are at 70% of their goal of $109,000 for 2012. One year ago this week, the East Moline Foundation was officially unveiled to the community. Since then, the Board has initiated several fundraising activities, met with financial advisors , and added two new Board members. Today, the campaign continues to raise $109,000 to match a $109,000 challenge gift already made by leaders of the East Moline Foundation.

For the second consecutive year, Moline Rotary is continuing its "Suits from Suits" program, which provides swimsuits and swim lessons for underprivileged children in the Quad Cities community. As partners, Moline Rotary and the Moline Foundation are working together to provide swim lessons for over 130 immigrant children and their families through World Relief. With a combined
grant of $3,500, local children from throughout the Illinois Quad Cities will receive free instruction in water safety as well as swimming lessons at Two Rivers YMCA, Moline.

Members of Moline Rotary have also generously donated over eighty swimsuits to distribute to the children participating in the swim program.

"Moline Rotarians are very generous with their time and resources," stated Randy Sovey, President of Moline Rotary. "I appreciate seeing projects like this make a difference in our community."

"It is heartwarming to know that so many children will learn a lifelong skill at our local Y. We also know it is important for immigrant families to learn about water safety, as we live as neighbors along the Mississippi and Rock Rivers," said Joy Boruff, Executive Director, The Moline Foundation.
