The Moline Foundation has a grant opportunity through a fund called Karen's Summertime FUNd in honor of Karen Getz. Through the Karen's Summertime FUNd, The Moline Foundation is offering mini-grants between $300 and $1,000. The object of this special opportunity is to provide non-profit organizations extra funds to develop creative, educational, and fun-filled activities for kids during the summer months. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply if they serve the citizens of Moline and the surrounding region, including the Quad Cities.

Karen's Summertime FUNd grants are made possible by Tom Getz, the Getz family and friends and many generous donors to The Moline Foundation. Such monies allow The Moline Foundation to give non-profits the opportunity to fill some of the gaps in quality summer programming and to support innovative and worthwhile efforts so that children through the Quad Cities have something just a little extra special to do this summer.

In establishing Karen's Summertime Kids program, we honor the life of a woman who gave to so many others. This special program will help us remember the many ways Karen Getz reached out to children with her sparkling personality and tireless spirit. But Karen will also be remembered as the thoughtful, intuitive partner in so many ventures and programs that brought light and hope to the hungry, homeless, and poor in our community.

The Moline Foundation, and the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation Announce $30,000 Gift to River Bend Foodbank To Assist in Fight Against Local Hunger

A news conference held this morning, Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at the River Bend Foodbank, 309 12th Street, Moline, Illinois announced a major funding gift of $30,0000 from a local community foundation, the Moline Foundation and a statewide foundation, the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation, Oak Brook, Illinois.

The gift is the result of a challenge grant campaign held in the Quad Cities the last few weeks and conducted by the Moline Foundation. Donors in the Quad Cities contributed $15,000 in just four days to benefit the River Bend Foodbank and its hunger relief programs, including the Backpack Feeding Program. The Backpack Program strives to ensure that children don't go hungry over the weekend when are no school meals for them to rely upon. The program serves approximately 1,200 children in the Quad Cities. Every Friday, during the school year, children participating in the Backpack Program receive free, nutritious food distributed at their school which they can then take home in their backpacks and easily prepare at home.

"This is an especially critical time in our community as food supplies are low during the cold winter. We are grateful to our donors and the opportunity to receive such a large matching grant to give to River Bend Foodbank," said Jon Tunberg, Chairman of The Moline Foundation.

The Moline Foundation and other community foundations in Illinois were challenged to raise funds in Springfield, Champaign, Chicago, St. Charles, Peoria, and East St. Louis. Over 1.5 million people in Illinois now live in poverty. Of this number, approximately 500,000 are children. This statewide funding initiative will be used to provide nutritious meals for Illinois children through after school programs, weekend back pack feeding programs, and mobile distribution programs.

River Bend Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organization in the Quad Cities and surrounding communities, distributing 6.3 million pounds of food annually to more than 300 charitable feeding programs throughout a 22 county service area in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. More than 10,000 people receive food assistance each week through River Bend's distribution network. The Foodbank also operates four Kids Café sites serving over 45,000 free meals to children each year, the Backpack Program which provides over 1300 Quad City children with nourishing food to take home on the weekends during the school year and the Mobile Food Pantry which directly feeds thousands of families.

As a Community Foundation, The Moline Foundation offers a range of charitable funds, allowing donors to advance a cause such as education or the environment, support an individual organization, provide flexible support for community needs or recommend individual grants. The Moline Foundation announces February 16, 2011 as the deadline to apply for the Lee Womack Scholarship. The Lee Womack Scholarship Fund is intended to provide funds to deserving students graduating from Moline High School who plan to obtain a college degree in education or teaching special education. Selected recipients shall use the funds for first year expenses for tuition, room, board, or books at any accredited two-year or four-year institution. Students should contact the counseling office at Moline High School for an application form.

Lee A. Womack graduated from Moline High School in 1956 and from Arizona State University in 1960. He taught school for eight years at Central Junior High School in Rock Island, Illinois. In 1978, he started work for Mr. Quick, Inc. and became President of the corporation in 1975. He served as President until 1980, when he founded the Lee Womack Insurance Agency. For 22 years, he owned and operated the insurance agency. Mr. Womack also served as President of Porkie's Restaurants, Ltd. from 1987 until he died in 2002.

Mr. Womack was highly respected in the Quad City community and had a reputation for providing others with an opportunity to succeed. By establishing the scholarship fund in his name, his family and friends continue to provide that opportunity for years to come.

The Lee Womack Memorial Scholarship award was established by Mr. Womack's wife, Peggy, and the Lee Womack Memorial Golf Outing Steering Committee. Since his death, a golf outing has been held in Mr. Womack's memory to raise funds for a local charity. In 2004, a scholarship fund was established and is administered through the Moline Foundation's scholarship program.

The Moline Foundation announces February 16, 2011 as the deadline to apply for the Charles Curry SMART Bus Scholarship. Applicant must be a 2011 graduate of a high school in Iowa or Illinois living in Henry, Mercer or Rock Island counties in Illinois or Scott or Muscatine counties in Iowa. Applicant may also be a freshman, sophomore or junior at an Illinois or Iowa college who graduated from a high school in one of the above five counties. Applicant must plan on majoring in or currently majoring in a Natural Resource curriculum or an Education curriculum. Students must enroll on a full-time basis. Students should contact their counseling office at your High School for an application or the Moline Foundation.

The scholarship award winner will be chosen by a local scholarship selection committee and will receive a scholarship of $500.00.

Charles E. Curry is the Founder of the Interstate Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) SMART (Sharp Minds Are Reading Thoroughly) Bus.

The SMART Bus Program, committed to reducing illiteracy, which began in 2000, has handed out over 36,000 books to children in the Muscatine and Scott Counties in Iowa and Henry, Mercer and Rock Island Counties in Illinois.

Charles E. Curry is a successful farmer and businessman from Alpha, Illinois and has served his community as a volunteer with many organizations including Interstate RC&D, Inc., the Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District for the past 34 years, the Livestock Feeders Association, the Henry County Board of Education, the Black Hawk Shrine Club, the Ophiem, IL Lutheran Church, and many other civic organizations.

Mr. Curry is well-respected in the Quad Cities area serving in various capacities with the Interstate RC&D Council. His leadership qualities combined with a passion and a vision for improving our natural resources, promoting community and rural economic development and education has contributed greatly to the success of the RC&D program and to helping improve the quality of life in our area. The Charles E. Curry Scholarship Fund was established in November of 2008 by the SMART Bus Committee to honor the hard work and dedication of Mr. Curry.

Residents of Moline School District No. 40 are eligible to apply for the four year college scholarship based on scholarship, financial need and extracurricular activities. Students should contact their counseling office at Moline High School, Alleman High School or Black Hawk College for an application. The three Hanson scholarship award winners will be chosen by a local scholarship selection committee and notified of their selection by May 1, 2011. They will receive $1,500 annually for the next four years with an annual renewal based on satisfactory progress in their post-secondary education.

Since 1985, over 100 students have received the Hanson Scholarship Funds as a result of an endowment fund established through the generosity of Clem T. Hanson (1901-1985), a former Moline businessman and community leader. He was the founder of Hanson Advertising Agency in Moline and was a co-founder of HON Industries in Muscatine. Mr. Hanson also served as president of Moline Rotary in 1952 and was a volunteer for Boy Scouts, Arrowhead Ranch and United Way. The Clement T. Hanson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established with the Moline Foundation by his family, following the death of Mr. Hanson on July 17, 1985.

THE MOLINE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES HANSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Two students have been chosen to receive 2010 scholarships from the Clement T. Hanson Scholarship Fund administered through The Moline Foundation.

Britta Caldwell is a 2010 graduate of Moline High School.  She will be attending Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, in the fall.

Adrianna Sullivan is a 2010 graduate of Moline High School.  She will attend Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, this fall to major in English Teacher/Education.

The two Hanson Scholarship winners are chosen by a local scholarship selection committee through The Moline Foundation. They will receive $1,500 annually for the next four years with an annual renewal based on satisfactory progress in their post-secondary education.

THE MOLINE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES WEBB SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Kelly E. Rogers and Laura E. Peterson, 2010 graduates of Moline High School have been chosen to receive scholarships from the Maggie Webb Scholarship Fund administered through The Moline Foundation.

Kelly will be attending Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, in the fall to major in Pre-Law:  Communications and Sports Studies.

Laura will be attending Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, in the fall to major in Accounting and Business.

The Webb Scholarship winners were chosen by Maggie's friends and family through the Moline Foundation to receive a $1,000.00 scholarship.

Maggie graduated from Moline High School in 2001. As a senior in high school, Maggie began working at the Von Maur department store in Moline. Upon graduating from college, Maggie became department manager for the Iowa City Von Maur store. She then worked at several other Midwestern Von Maur stores earning acclaim for her sparkling personality and commitment to customer service.

Maggie's life tragically ended in December, 2007 with the mass shooting at an Omaha Nebraska mall. Maggie had recently moved to Omaha to serve as Von Maur Store Manager when she was killed along with five other employees and two customers.

THE MOLINE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES MOLINE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF '59 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Two students have been chosen to receive the annual scholarships from the Moline High School Class of '59 Scholarship Fund as administered through The Moline Foundation.

Madison Logan is a recent 2010 graduate of Moline High School.  She will be attending Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois in the fall to major in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Tucker Gritton is also a recent 2010 graduate of Moline High School.  This fall he will attend University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois, to major in Aerospace Engineering.

The two Moline High School Class of '59 Scholarship winners were chosen by a Selection Advisory Committee to each receive a $1,000.00 scholarship.  The fund was established by the Class of '59 as a way to commemorate their fiftieth class reunion.  This high school class was also the first class to graduate from the Moline High School building located at 3600 23rd Avenue.

Funds were raised by class members and volunteers over the past three years through a variety of fundraisers including barbeques, yard sales, and individual donations.

Olivia M. Aten, Moline High School, was chosen to receive a scholarship from the Lee Womack Memorial Scholarship Fund,

The fund provides scholarships to deserving Moline High School graduates who plan to obtain a degree in education. Olivia was chosen by a local selection committee to receive a scholarship of $1,000.00.  She plans to study Elementary Education at University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The scholarship was established by Womack's wife, Peggy and the Lee Womack Memorial Golf Outing Steering Committee. Annually since his death, a golf outing has been held in his memory to raise funds for a local charity. In 2004, the scholarship fund was established and is now administered by the Moline Foundation.

THE MOLINE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES HULSE-DIIULIO SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

A Moline High School student has been chosen to receive a scholarship from the Dolores A. Hulse-DiIulio Scholarship Fund administered through The Moline Foundation.

Miranda Geever, Moline, recently graduated from Moline High School. She plans to attend Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, Illinois this fall to major in Chemistry.

Miranda was chosen by a local scholarship selection committee through The Moline Foundation to receive a scholarship of $1,000.

The Dolores A Hulse-DiIulio Scholarship Fund is intended to provide funds to deserving female students graduating from Moline High School pursing a bachelor's degree on a full time basis with studies in the fields of chemistry, physics, engineering or pre-medicine.

Dolores A. Hulse-DiIulio was a chemistry teacher at Moline High School for 36 years.  She retired in 1994.

A 1958 graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a major in Chemistry and minors in Math and Physics, Dolores began teaching at Moline when the new high school opened on 23rd Avenue.   She has always wanted females to believe that the field of science was for them not just for men.  Her hope is that this scholarship may help female students and encourage them in their goals.

The fund provides for a scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior from an Iowa or Illinois High School or a freshman, sophomore or junior from an Iowa or Illinois Community College or 4 year college or university who plans to obtain a degree in education or natural resources. Shelby was chosen by a local selection committee to receive a scholarship of $500.00. She plans to major in Elementary Education at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois.

The scholarship was established in November, 2008 by the SMART Bus committee and the Interstate Resources Conservation and Development Services to honor the hard work and dedication of Mr. Curry. The scholarship fund is now administered by the Moline Foundation.

    • Thirteen Moline elementary school students have been chosen to receive an award from the Hazel F. Van Arsdale Memorial Scholarship Fund administered through The Moline Foundation.

    • The 13 elementary students are: Maria Martinez-Hernandez, Alexis Willey, Kennedy Bromley, Carolyn Wehr, Juan Aguilera, Rachel Stanley, Margaret Thompson, Zane Nelson, Livvie Lyman, Cameron Johnson, Rachel Powell, Caleb Schnell and Joshua Schnell.

    • The fund was started in honor and memory of Hazel F. Van Arsdale to perpetuate the importance of music in elementary and secondary education.  The fund supports two types of annual awards.  One award is given to selected elementary students, and one scholarship is given to a high school senior.  The 13 elementary students were chosen by an individual school committee made up of teachers and music professionals through The Moline Foundation.  Each will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

    • Hazel Van Arsdale was a public school teacher for 36 years.  She was known for her strict, but fun, manner of bringing music into the classroom.  She made sure all of her students knew every verse of all of our patriotic hymns, and wanted them to strengthen their music interest beyond elementary school.  A fund was established and is now administered through The Moline Foundation's scholarship program.
