Old Time Flavors Featured in Iowa State Fair Nostalgic Cooking Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2014)(readMedia)-- Patty Hummel of Allison won First Place Overall and a $300 cash award in the Nostalgic Comfort Food competition judged Friday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.  Lonnie Hartstack of Clarinda earned Second Place Overall and $200. Susie Jones of Waukee claimed Third Place Overall and $100.  Contestants were challenged to create a retro or nostalgic dish that featured the taste of days gone by. Each entry was accompanied by a written description of why the dish is nostalgic to the cook. Entries were judged on taste, originality and appearance.

Sprouts Hear Music to Their Ears at Iowa State Fair Talent Search

Each of the six Sprout Champions will receive a prize of $250 after the Championship Show. More than $18,000 will be awarded to the Senior and Sprout divisions combined. This year's contest is sponsored by Hy-Vee.

DES MOINES, IA (08/09/2014)(readMedia)-- Elizabeth Glover, 17, of Clay County was crowned the 2014 Iowa State Fair Queen by Alan Brown, president of the Fair Board. This year's ceremony, which marked the 50th anniversary of the contest, took place on Saturday evening at the Anne and Bill Riley Stage sponsored by Pepsi.

The daughter of Louis and Lois Glover of Spencer, Elizabeth was chosen out of the 102 contestants who participated in this year's competition. All had been crowned queen of their respective county fairs prior to the State Fair.

Megan Andersen, 18, of Grundy County was named first runner-up. She is the daughter of Eric and Darla Andersen of Cedar Falls. Second runner-up was Amber Neisius, 19, of Cherokee County. She is the daughter of Bruce Rainboth and Betty Neisius of Marcus. Emily Pattee, 19, of Shelby County was named third runner-up. She is the daughter of Cindy Pattee of Harlan.

Brooklyn Plagge, of Franklin County, was given the Outstanding Leadership Award. The 17-year-old is the daughter of John and Anne Plagge of Hampton. Lydia Grace Dawley, 17, of Winneshiek County was given the Personality Plus Award. She is the daughter of Nathan and Jacque Dawley of Decorah.

Queen Elizabeth, who will reign for the next year, receives a $2,800 scholarship from the Iowa State Fair in addition to her crown, sash and trophy. She also receives a floral bouquet from Boesen the Florist, a $600 gift card to Jordan Creek Mall and a pair of diamond earrings from B. Shannon Designs.

The first runner-up earns a $1,300 scholarship and $300 gift card to Jordan Creek Mall; the second runner-up wins $700 in scholarship money and a $250 Jordan Creek Mall gift card; and the third runner-up receives a $500 scholarship and $200 Jordan Creek Mall gift card. The Outstanding Leadership recipient wins an $800 Scholarship and a $250 Jordan Creek Mall gift card. The Personality Plus winner receives a $500 scholarship and a $200 Jordan Creek Mall gift card. All members of the Royal Court receive a plaque from the State Fair and a floral bouquet from Boesen the Florist. An anonymous donor graciously provided the Jordan Creek gift cards for the Royal Court.

Judging is based on personality, attitude, awareness, leadership, citizenship, contribution to community, overall appearance, charm and poise.

Top Honors Awarded in Iowa State Fair FFA Market and Carcass Lamb Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/09/2014)(readMedia)-- Grand Champion honors were awarded Thursday in the FFA Market and Carcass Lamb shows at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Tanner Berry of Sac City showed the Grand Champion FFA Market Lamb, and Chelsea Nelson of Exira took Reserve Grand Champion honors.

In the carcass judging, Megan Collison of Rockwell City earned Grand Champion honors while James Leonard of Newton received the Reserve Grand Champion banner.

The judges saw 367 animals from 136 exhibitors in the Market Lamb division and 77 animals from 50 exhibitors in the Carcass division.

Perry Hampshire Sets New Iowa State Fair Big Ram Record

DES MOINES, IA (08/07/2014)(readMedia)-- A two-year-old Hampshire ram from Perry set a new Iowa State Fair record, tipping the scales at 507.5 pounds during the Big Ram competition judged Thursday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

The top ram, dubbed "Zeus" by owner Daryl Mickelson, bested his nearest competitor by 86.5 pounds.

Second place was claimed by Seelow Sheep Farms' two-year-old Rambouillet ram who weighed in at 421 pounds.

Solid Rock, the four-year-old Suffolk ram owned by Merle Van Klompenburg of Orange City claimed third place at 408.5 pounds.

Peabody Wins Hearts and Iowa State Fair Big Boar Title

DES MOINES, IA (08/07/2014)(readMedia)-- Fueled by the memory of a friend, a group of former college buddies set out to win the Iowa State Fair Big Boar contest judged Thursday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

The five-year-old Hampshire boar named Peabody, owned by Pleasant Hill's Friends of Peabody, weighed in at 1,273 pounds. Peabody was shown by Lori Dvorak of Ankeny and raised by Dvorak with assistance from Craig Rowles and Tom Dittmer.

The winning boar was named after Brad Peyton, an Urbandale attorney, businessman and founder of the Shining City Foundation, who died last year following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Peabody was Peyton's nickname when he attended Iowa State University.

Big Mac, a two-year-old crossbred shown by McDonald Acres of Ryan earned second place at 1,142 pounds.

Boss Hog, the four-year-old crossbred shown by Gene Stoltzfus and Kip Granger of North English claimed third place at 1,132 pounds.

The Shining City Foundation is based in Urbandale. It was founded in 2001 and is dedicated to enhancing the general welfare of underserved populations around the world through improved health care, housing and education.

Prescott Charolais Tops Iowa State Fair Super Bull Competition

DES MOINES, IA (08/07/2014)(readMedia)-- Big Daddy, the 3,012-pound Charolais bull owned by Craig Stalcup of Prescott, outweighed the competition to win the Super Bull contest judged Thursday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Doug Sudbrock of Indianola took second place with his 2,501-pound Red Angus bull, Wingnut, and third place with his 1,329-pound Red Angus bull, Grumpy.

Big Daddy, as well as the Big Boar and Big Ram, will be on display at the Iowa State Fair in the Cattle, Swine and Sheep Barns, respectively, through August 17.

For the 11 days of the Fair, sculptors, and registered chainsaw carvers, A.J. Lutter and Gary Keenan will amaze spectators with their work as they transform simple logs into pieces of art in less than one hour. The pair is nationally known, traveling to city, county and state Fairs, and can sculpt anything from people to animals.

Add a piece of Iowa State Fair art to your home by attending the 2014 Woodcarver's Auction! The auction will feature the sculptures that Lutter and Keenan create each day at the Iowa State Fair. In addition to the woodcarvings, champion meats will be up for bid during the sale, including ham, bacon and dried beef.

The 2014 Woodcarver's Auction will be held on Sunday, August 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the air-conditioned comfort of the Cattle Barn's Penningroth Media Center. All funds generated from the auction will be used by the Blue Ribbon Foundation to preserve and renovate the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Since its inception in 1993, the Blue Ribbon Foundation has been raising funds to renovate and restore the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds. Funds have been generated to support 40 projects throughout the Fairgrounds. Improvements have been made to the William C. Knapp Varied Industries Building, the Grandstand, the Campgrounds and Ye Old Mill. In addition, funds support the building of new facilities such as the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center, Elwell Family Food Center and the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since 1993, the Foundation has generated more than $100 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Rock legends Foreigner and Styx wrap up the 2014 Grandstand performances at 8 p.m. Foreigner, hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world, has 10 multi-platinum albums, 16 top-thirty hits and over 75 million albums sold. They are responsible for rock anthems such as "Juke Box Hero," "Feels Like the First Time," "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and "I Want to Know What Love Is." Fastball, a rock group known for singles like "The Way," "Sooner or Later" and "Out of My Head", plays at 8 p.m. on the Bud Light Stage sponsored by ABC5.

Charles Esten, best known for his role on ABC's Nashville, will perform songs like "Keep Coming Back" and "Like New." The show kicks off at 8 p.m. on the Susan Knapp Amphitheater with media sponsor KDSM FOX 17.

Family Fun

Final day family fun abounds with the Bill Riley Talent Search championships, a dog agility demonstration, and numerous contests including the Mother-Daughter Look-alike contest, the Pigtail, Ponytail, Braid, Mohawk and Mullet contest, and a cribbage tournament. Veterans will be honored with discounted gate admission on Veterans' Day, August 11. With a military I.D., retired and active members of the armed forces and their spouses will receive $8 gate admission from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Veterans' Day will also feature special patriotic programming.

The Veterans' Day parade, an annual tradition featuring military bands, floats and more, will parade down the Grand Concourse at 11 a.m.

The Spirit of Liberty Foundation's Freedom Bell will be on display north of the Administration Building through August 11. The bell honors our armed forces past, present and future.

Stop by the West Grand Exhibit Area to check out Hoover Presidential Library Museum display focused on President Hoover's food relief efforts during World War I. DES MOINES, IA (07/31/2014)(readMedia)-- The 2014 Iowa State Fair Parade is set Wednesday, August 6. The Parade will begin at 6:15 p.m. in downtown Des Moines and is the kick-off to this year's "Amazingly Amusing" Fair, August 7-17.

The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) will serve as this year's Parade Marshal in honor of over 100 years of service to the Des Moines Area. The CVB draws millions of visitors to the area each year and serves as a resource for many local events including amateur, collegiate and professional sports in tandem with the Des Moines Area Sports Commission, a division of the CVB. In the last several years, the CVB has collaborated with the Iowa State Fair to bring even more events to the area including the NAIA Wrestling Tournament, Percheron Horse Association of America's World Congress and National Junior High Finals Rodeo.

The CVB is led by President and CEO Greg Edwards. In addition to his role with the organization, Edwards serves as Chair of the Susan G. Komen Foundation's Des Moines Affiliate, as a board member for the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Iowa Destination Marketing Alliance and the Travel Federation of Iowa, and Past Chair of Destination Marketing Association International.

The Iowa State Fair Parade is the state's largest, showcasing nearly 200 floats, animals, vehicles, novelty and performing units. Staging will take place at the State Capitol complex. Parade entrants will then travel west on Grand Avenue to 13th Street. Dispersion will take place between 13th and 18th Streets.

Highlights of the gala event will be re-broadcast on parade night throughout central Iowa on KDSM Fox 17 beginning at 10 p.m.

DES MOINES, IA (07/29/2014)(readMedia)-- The completed three-phase renovation of the Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center will debut at the 2014 Iowa State Fair, August 7-17. Improvements to the building include new exhibit space, improved traffic flow, additional public restrooms and air conditioning.

For the first time in several years, the building's third floor will be open to the public. The fully renovated floor will host new exhibit space for the Fair's popular fine art and photography displays as well as daily programming on the new artists' demonstration stage. In recognition of the Photography Salon's 75th year, it will feature only black and white entries, including submissions in this year's theme class saluting Ansel Adams.

The three-phase building renovations also include a focus on improved accessibility with expanded walkways, new ADA compliant family restroom facilities, two working elevators and air conditioning. Additional improvements include enhancements to the courtyard, including a paved plaza and a new exhibit by the Greater Des Moines Public Arts Foundation.

The Cultural Center will showcase Bill Woolston's 1975 photo essay Iowa's Fair in the atrium as well as the state's largest art show with exhibits in the areas of fine arts, photography, creative arts, wood projects and doll house and miniature room. More than 2,500 exhibits will be on display.

Fairgoers can let their creative flags fly and try their hands at making art. Make and Take projects available in the Cultural Center include magnets, wire jewelry and name bracelets. Young fairgoers can also participate in fun hands-on activities at Art Attack in the Cultural Center courtyard.

Eleven days of live demonstrations and working exhibits also offer Fairgoers the opportunity to see art in action, with artists demonstrating such art forms as wheel thrown pottery, glass fusing, china painting and more.
