Houston sends minor leaguers Mengden and Nottingham to Oakland

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have acquired left-handed pitcher Scott Kazmir from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for two minor leaguers, right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden and catcher Jacob Nottingham. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.

Kazmir, 31, who will join the club in Kansas City tomorrow, has gone 5-5 with a 2.38 ERA (29ER/109.2IP) in 18 starts for the A's this season. Among American League pitchers, Kazmir ranks fourth in opponent batting average (.213) and fifth in ERA. He has made one start since the All-Star Break, tossing 8.1 innings, and allowing just one run on five hits on Saturday vs. Minnesota. On the season, Kazmir has allowed just three earned runs or fewer in 17 of his 18 starts.

"Scott Kazmir is one of the best pitchers in the American League and strengthens our rotation," said Luhnow. "His addition gives the Astros a better chance of reaching and succeeding in the postseason. It has been a while since the Astros have been relevant late in the summer and winning now is a priority."

A native of Houston and a resident of nearby Cypress, Kazmir attended Cy Falls High School before being drafted by the Mets in the first round (15th overall pick) of the 2002 draft. He is an 11-year Major League veteran and a three-time All-Star (2006, 2008, 2014). Kazmir owns a career 96-84 record with a 3.95 ERA (649ER/1480IP) while pitching for Tampa Bay (2004-09), Los Angeles-AL (2009-11), Cleveland (2013) and Oakland (2014-15).

Most recently, Mengden and Nottingham had been playing for Class A Advanced Lancaster after each began the 2015 season at Class A Quad Cities. Mengden was originally a fourth-round selection in the 2014 draft, while Nottingham was originally taken in the sixth round of the 2013 draft.

With the addition of Kazmir, the Astros 40-man roster is now at 39.

Quad Cities evens series in Kane County with a 4-3, 15-inning win in four hours, 56 minutes

GENEVA, Ill. (July 23, 2015) - In their longest game in five seasons, the Quad Cities River Bandits lost a 3-1, eighth-inning lead, but they kept the Kane County Cougars scoreless with eight runners left on base in extra innings, and left fielder Drew Ferguson hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 15th inning of a 4-3 win lasting four hours, 56 minutes at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Wednesday night.

The River Bandits (16-11 second half, 61-34 overall) played their longest game - both in innings and time - since July 25, 2010, when they won an 8-5, 16-inning game in Dayton in five hours, 21 minutes. Quad Cities improved to 8-6 in 14 extra-inning games - already their most in a single season since 2010. Kane County (22-5, 58-37) left 17 runners on base and was 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position.

The 15th-inning rally began with designated hitter Jason Martin singling to right field with one out against Ryan Gebhardt (0-1), a Cougars infielder used as the team's sixth pitcher of the game and 11th in the first two games of the series. With shortstop Alex Bregman batting, a passed ball by catcher Michael Perez allowed Martin to gain two bases and reach third, before Gebhardt intentionally walked Bregman. Gebhardt then hit center fielder Ramon Laureano with a pitch to load the bases, and Ferguson flied to right field to score Martin.

Pitching on back-to-back days for the third time this season, River Bandits right-hander Ryan Thompson (4-2) got the last out of the 14th inning and had a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 15th. Cougars third baseman Joe Munoz hit a one-out single, center fielder Victor Reyes walked, and right fielder Chuck Taylor singled to left field to load the bases. For the fourth time, Kane County had the winning run in scoring position, and for the second time it loaded the bases in extra innings. But Cougars shortstop Ildemaro Vargas grounded to Bregman, who began his third double play of the game by throwing to second baseman Luis Reynoso, who threw to first base for the final out.

The Cougars had begun the scoring Wednesday with a second-inning run against River Bandits right-hander Christian Powell. All-Star first baseman Marty Herum hit a leadoff double to left-center field and scored on catcher Michael Perez's one-out, ground-rule double down the first-base line for a 1-0 Cougars lead. That was the only run against Powell, who scattered eight hits in a season-high 6 1/3 innings.

Quad Cities took its first lead in the third inning, with a rally started by third baseman Kristian Trompiz on his first of a team-best three hits in the game. His leadoff single preceded a sacrifice by Reynoso, who reached on right-hander Brad Keller's throwing error to first base. With two runners in scoring position, Martin hit a game-tying groundout, and Bregman hit a go-ahead single to center field for a 2-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Laureano and Ferguson hit consecutive doubles for a 3-1 lead. Keller was charged with two earned runs in six innings.

Powell had three strikeouts and one walk, and he lasted until consecutive seventh-inning, one-out singles by second baseman Henry Castillo and Munoz. Left-hander Michael Freeman entered to get Reyes to ground to Bregman for an inning-ending double play. In the eighth inning, however, Taylor singled to right field, went to third base on Vargas' double and scored on Herum's ground ball to make it 3-2. Freeman was also charged with the tying run - although unearned - after allowing Castillo's leadoff single in the ninth inning. Right-hander Angel Heredia allowed Munoz's sacrifice but made an errant throw to first base, sending Castillo to third base. Reyes grounded out to score Castillo, and Taylor walked, but Heredia got the next two outs to send the game to extra innings. Quad Cities loaded the bases with one out in the 10th inning but did not score off Cougars right-hander Jency Solis. Kane County had the winning run at third base with one out and loaded the bases with two outs in the 11th inning, but Heredia tallied the last two of his four strikeouts in three scoreless innings on his 23rd birthday. Right-hander Riley Ferrell went a career-high 2 2/3 innings before two 14th-inning walks prompted Thompson's entry.

The River Bandits seek to remain unbeaten in road series this season when they play a rubber match in Kane County at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. River Bandits right-hander Justin Ferrell (2-2) is scheduled to face Cougars right-hander Ethan Elias (9-3).

Quad Cities ends regular season series with playoff opponent by scoring its most runs in two months

DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 20, 2015) - Every player in the starting lineup contributed to the Quad Cities River Bandits' 17 hits, led by three each from shortstop Alex Bregman and first baseman Ryan Bottger, while designated hitter Drew Ferguson posted a career-high four RBIs in a 14-5 rout of the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 2,456 at Modern Woodmen Park Monday afternoon.

The River Bandits (15-10 second half, 60-33 overall) posted the highest single-game run total by any opponent of Cedar Rapids this season and scored 14 runs for the first time since a 14-10 win at Clinton May 18. Quad Cities also scored double-digit runs for the first time in 47 games since May 27, when the club won, 13-4, at home over Kane County. Monday's win also kept Quad Cities perfect in three series rubber matches with Cedar Rapids (13-12, 54-41). The River Bandits won all four series with the Kernels and finished 9-4 in their regular season meetings. The two teams will play each other next in the best-of-three first round of the Midwest League playoffs beginning Sept. 9.

River Bandits right-hander Elieser Hernandez made his first Midwest League start Monday and retired the first eight batters. He allowed two hits and one walk with six strikeouts in the first four innings. Right-hander Eric Peterson (5-4) began the fifth inning with an 11-0 lead and allowed four runs - two earned - on four hits and one walk with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings. Right-hander Jorge Perez pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out four batters, walking one and allowing a ninth-inning home run by Kernels center fielder Tanner English.

After the game was scoreless into the bottom of the third inning, Quad Cities reached the scoreboard in four straight innings from the third to the sixth innings. River Bandits center fielder Bobby Boyd began the five-run, 11-batter third inning with a leadoff single against Kernels right-hander Keaton Steele (2-3). Left fielder Jason Martin and Bregman drew consecutive walks, before All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu grounded a two-run single down the first-base line. With runners at first and third bases, right fielder Ramon Laureano grounded into a fielder's choice, but second baseman Rafael Valera overthrew first base, so Bregman scored and Laureano went to second base. A passed ball moved Laureano to third base before Ferguson walked, ending Steele's outing. Against All-Star right-hander Jared Wilson, Ferguson stole second base, and catcher Garrett Stubbs brought in Laureano with a sacrifice fly to center field. Bottger hit a two-out RBI single over shortstop Sean Miller to make it 5-0. In the game's longest inning, the River Bandits had three hits and five of their six total walks. All five runs were earned against Steele, who allowed five hits and three walks with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings.

In the fourth inning against Wilson, Bregman led off with an infield single to the shortstop hole and reached third base on Laureano's one-out single to left field. Laureano stole second base, giving Ferguson the opportunity to drive in his first two runs with a single into center field for a 7-0 lead. Wilson was charged with two earned runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

In the fifth inning, Kernels left-hander Michael Theofanopoulous allowed Boyd's one-out single to left field, followed by Martin's double to left-center field and Bregman's RBI infield single off third baseman Pat Kelly for an 8-0 score. With two outs, Laureano placed an RBI single to left-center field, and Ferguson hit a two-run double down the left-field line to extend the lead to 11-0.

After the Kernels' first run came in the sixth inning, Bottger led off the bottom of the inning with the first home run of the season allowed by Kernels All-Star left-hander Cam Booser. A three-run Kernels seventh inning made it 12-4, but Kernels All-Star right-hander Randy LeBlanc walked Stubbs to begin the eighth inning that included two Kernels errors leading to Quad Cities' final two runs.

The River Bandits play their next nine games in 10 days on the road - the longest remaining road stretch for the club this season. Quad Cities begins a three-game series in Kane County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. River Bandits right-hander Joshua James (2-1) is scheduled to face Cougars right-hander Chris Oliver (2-0) in the first second-half meeting between the teams with the league's two best overall records.

PAULINO GOES 7 SHUTOUT INNINGS IN BANDITS' WIN

Quad Cities sets up third rubber match in four series with first-round playoff opponent Cedar Rapids

DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 19, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander David Paulino pitched a career-high seven shutout innings, and first baseman Nick Tanielu's two-out, three-run double in the eighth inning provided the insurance for a 5-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 6,130 at Modern Woodmen Park Sunday night.

Paulino (2-2) struck out seven batters and scattered four hits, working around a pair of first-inning singles before retiring 14 consecutive batters in one stretch. For the second time in three starts, he won by pitching at least six shutout innings without walking a batter.

The Kernels (13-11 second half, 54-40 overall) nearly had a first-inning scoring threat, as center fielder Tanner English led off with a single down the third-base line and tried stretching it to a double, but left fielder Ramon Laureano threw from the left-field line to second baseman Alex Hernandez on the fly to retire English sliding into second base for the game's first out. Right fielder Edgar Corcino hit a two-out infield single and went to second base on a balk, before left fielder Zack Larson grounded out to end the inning.

Laureano also ignited the offensive effort for the River Bandits (14-10, 59-33) in the second inning against Kernels left-hander Luke Westphal (1-2). After drawing an eight-pitch leadoff walk, Laureano stole second base and dashed to third base when catcher Alex Real's throw went into center field. Designated hitter Ryan Bottger lined out to second base, before center fielder Jason Martin's groundout over the first-base side of the pitcher's mound scored Laureano to make it 1-0. Westphal dueled Paulino by allowing one hit - a third-inning single by catcher Garrett Stubbs for his first Midwest League hit - through the first five innings.

Quad Cities kept the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning, when third baseman Kristian Trompiz drove a one-out triple to the warning track in right-center field and scored when shortstop Alex Bregman lifted a two-out RBI double to the right-field corner. Westphal matched a career high by going six innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

After allowing only two baserunners to reach second base and none to reach third, Paulino turned over a 2-0 lead to right-hander Riley Ferrell to begin the eighth inning. With one out, first baseman Tyler Kuresa hit an infield single to Tanielu, followed by consecutive walks to designated hitter Austin Diemer and third baseman Pat Kelly to load the bases. A wild pitch with English batting scored a run and put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. English then popped out to Tanielu, before a pitch to shortstop Nick Gordon got away from Stubbs to foul territory on the first-base side, but the River Bandits catcher recovered in time to throw to Ferrell at home plate, where he tagged out Diemer to end the inning and preserve the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Kernels right-hander Chris Mazza began his second inning of relief by retiring the first two batters. Then Trompiz and right fielder Drew Ferguson hit consecutive two-out singles to center field, before Bregman walked to load the bases. Tanielu then drilled a 2-1 offering down the left-field line to plate three runs and give his team its first five-run output in seven games.

Ferrell got the first out of the ninth inning before allowing consecutive one-out walks, prompting a change to right-hander Ryan Thompson, who got consecutive flyouts to earn his fourth save and end his team's first game decided by more than two runs since July 11, as well as just the fourth game decided by more than two runs in the first 12 games of the season series with Cedar Rapids.

Monday's 1 p.m. rubber match will be the third in as many three-game series between the River Bandits and Kernels, who will not meet again until the first round of the playoffs. Quad Cities right-hander Elieser Hernandez (0-0) will make his first Midwest League start.

UP NEXT: Gates open at noon for the final regular season game between the River Bandits and their first-round playoff opponents, the Cedar Rapids Kernels. KERNELS RALLY IN NINTH TO BEAT BANDITS, 3-2
Quad Cities loses for first time in 45 games when leading after eight innings this season
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 18, 2015) - A two-run single by Cedar Rapids center fielder Tanner English with one out in the ninth inning helped the Kernels snatch a 3-2 victory from the Quad Cities River Bandits Saturday night in front of 5,634 at Modern Woodmen Park.
In a preview of their first-round playoff series, the River Bandits (13-10 second half, 58-33 overall) lost for the first time in 45 games when leading through eight innings. The Kernels (13-10, 54-39) won the sixth one-run game in 11 meetings between the two teams.
After catching three fly ball outs in a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning, English provided the only hit of the Kernels' ninth-inning rally. With his team trailing 2-1 entering the inning, Kernels first baseman Tyler Kuresa drew a walk against River Bandits reliever Angel Heredia (3-2). Catcher Brian Navarreto tried to bunt Kuresa into scoring position but also reached base after Quad Cities catcher Trent Woodward threw high to first base after fielding the bunt. Third baseman Pat Kelly put both runners in scoring position by laying down another bunt. English then put the Kernels ahead with his hit to left field, advancing to second on a throw by left fielder Jason Martin that reached home plate just behind the trailing runner Navarreto. After blowing his first save in five opportunities this season, Heredia threw a wild pitch that moved English to third base. When shortstop Nick Gordon flied to Martin in shallow left field, English tried to score, but Martin made a laser throw to Woodward for the final out of the inning, keeping the deficit to one run.
Kernels All-Star right-hander Trevor Hildenberger pitched the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing a two-out single to River Bandits All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu before retiring Martin on a flyout to the left-field warning track to earn his 14th save.
The Kernels scored first on Saturday. Navarreto led off the third inning with a single and scored on a two-out triple by Gordon. The run was the only one against Quad Cities starter Justin Ferrell, who allowed four hits, struck out three and walked three in six innings of work.
Kernels starter Sam Gibbons went five innings, allowing five hits while striking out four and walking one. The River Bandits scored both of their runs in the sixth inning off Cedar Rapids reliever Yorman Landa. Right fielder Ramon Laureano led off the inning against Landa with a double and was bunted over to third base by designated hitter Sean McMullen. First baseman Ryan Bottger walked to put runners on the corners for catcher Trent Woodward. With Woodward batting, Navaretto allowed a passed ball that struck his left leg and bounced all the way to the Kernels dugout, allowing Laureano to score and McMullen to get to second. Woodward then lofted a single into center field, scoring McMullen and giving the River Bandits a 2-1 lead. The RBI for Woodward was his first in the Midwest League.
Quad Cities had two other opportunities to score runs, getting the first two men on base in the fifth inning before Gibbons retired the next three batters. Consecutive one-out walks in the seventh inning against Landa were also stranded after consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. Kernels left-hander Michael Theofanopoulos (3-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning with all three outs caught by English.

BANDITS REACH BEST MARK, THEN LOSE 1ST TO WISCONSIN

Quad Cities briefly goes 27 games above .500 for first time since the end of the 2010 season

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (July 17, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits left fielder Jason Martin homered to open the scoring in a 4-2, Game 1 win Friday, but Wisconsin right-hander David Burkhalter went six shutout innings in a 3-2, Game 2 win for the Timber Rattlers' first victory in nine games with Quad Cities and a doubleheader split of seven-inning games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

With a Game 1 win in their first road doubleheader since June 29, 2014, the River Bandits (13-9 second half, 58-32 overall) briefly achieved an overall record 27 games above .500 (58-31) for the first time since finishing the 2010 season 28 games above .500. Despite remaining undefeated in road series this season, Quad Cities missed an opportunity for its first sweep victory in its last 18 series - since sweeping Wisconsin at home May 7-9 - and its first doubleheader sweep since July 6, 2014, when it swept Wisconsin at home.

In the top of the second inning in Game 1, Martin broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run to the right-field boardwalk off Timber Rattlers right-hander Cody Ponce (0-1). Martin's seven home runs are the most of any active River Bandit. Quad Cities added to the lead with two-out rally in the third inning. Shortstop Alex Bregman singled to center field, followed by consecutive RBI doubles to left field by All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu and right fielder Ramon Laureano, giving Quad Cities a 3-0 lead. The team added its final run of the game in the fourth inning, as first baseman Ryan Bottger split the left-center field gap for a triple and scored on the same play, as the relay throw by shortstop Blake Allemand went past third base, extending the River Bandits' lead to 4-0. Ponce was charged with four runs - three earned - on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts in a career-high five innings.

River Bandits right-hander Francis Martes scattered two singles and a walk through the first four innings, but Wisconsin (7-14, 30-61) tallied two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Martes began by walking catcher Greg McCall, who advanced to third base after two groundouts. Center fielder Brandon Diaz then tapped a ground ball in front of home plate, where Martes failed to field it cleanly, allowing McCall to score and Diaz to reach first base. Allemand then singled to center field, and third baseman Dustin DeMuth hit an RBI single to left field, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Martes was removed after allowing two unearned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings, so left-hander Michael Freeman (1-1) entered to strike out designated hitter Carlos Leal and end the inning. Freeman worked around a sixth-inning walk and seventh-inning double to earn his first professional win, posting a career-high four strikeouts.

In Game 2, the Timber Rattlers took the lead with a pair of first-inning runs off River Bandits right-hander Christian Powell (2-1). Allemand, who went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, singled to left field and went to second base when left fielder Drew Ferguson bobbled the ball. DeMuth then drove a ground-rule double that bounced off the warning track in right-center field and over the fence to score Allemand. Leal followed with a single to left field, scoring DeMuth for a 2-0 Wisconsin lead. After allowing three straight hits, Powell allowed only two hits and a hit batter for the rest of his five innings, posting a career-high seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and no walks.

For Wisconsin, Burkhalter (3-5) scattered four hits and one walk with one strikeout in a season-high six innings. Right-hander Luke Curtis began the seventh inning with a 3-0 lead, but Martin led off with a triple to right-center field and Ferguson walked. With one out, second baseman Alex Hernandez walked to load the bases, and catcher Garrett Stubbs hit a sacrifice fly to right field for his first Midwest League RBI. Third baseman Luis Reynoso lined a two-out, two-strike RBI single to right field to make it 3-2, but with the tying run at second base, first baseman Alan Sharkey made a diving catch on a line drive by designated hitter Bobby Boyd for the final out.

River Bandits win pitching award in consecutive weeks for the first time since at least 2003
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 14, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander David Paulino has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for his performance during the week of July 6-12, the Midwest League announced on Monday.
Paulino, 21, is the second consecutive River Bandit to win Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors, following right-hander Angel Heredia, who won the award for June 29-July 5. Following infielder Mott Hyde (Player of the Week April 27-May 3) and Heredia, Paulino is the third River Bandit honored with a Midwest League weekly award this season. The Quad Cities franchise last won two consecutive weekly awards in 2007, when Michael Schellinger won Pitcher of the Week for July 16-22, and Steve Hill was awarded Player of the Week for July 23-29. Quad Cities had not won back-to-back Pitcher of the Week awards since at least 2003.
Paulino won the award for his start and win in Game 1 of a home doubleheader July 7 against Clinton. He matched a career high by going six innings, allowing no runs on five hits while striking out a season-high eight batters and walking none.
In three starts since joining the River Bandits from Short Season Class-A Tri-City June 29, Paulino is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA, 19 strikeouts, and four walks while allowing 14 hits in 15 innings. In the first five starts of his first season pitching in the Houston Astros organization, Paulino is 2-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 24 1/3 innings with six walks and 29 strikeouts, a .200 opponents' average and 0.99 WHIP.
A native of Nizao in the Dominican Republic, Paulino was acquired in a trade by the Houston Astros Sept. 13, 2013, as the player to be named later from a July 29, 2013, trade with the Detroit Tigers. That trade brought outfielder Danry Vasquez to the Astros organization - and the River Bandits' 2013 Midwest League Championship team - while sending pitcher Jose Veras to the Tigers major league team.
Tying run reaches base in last four innings for Quad Cities in 3-2 defeat
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 14, 2015) - A three-run, fifth-inning rally for Burlington helped overcome four no-hit innings by River Bandits starter David Paulino, and Bees relievers Jordan Piche and Eduardo Paredes withstood rallies in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings as the Burlington Bees beat the Quad Cities River Bandits, 3-2, in front of 2,666 at Modern Woodmen Park Monday night.
The game started with a heat index of near 100 degrees, but Paulino (1-2) cooled the Bees by retiring the first 10 batters he faced before walking shortstop Erick Salcedo with one out in the top of the fourth inning.
Quad Cities (11-8, 56-31) got off to a quick start, scoring in the first inning for the fifth consecutive game. With one out, left fielder Jason Martin doubled to right field, and advanced to third base with catcher Jamie Ritchie batting. After Ritchie walked, designated hitter Sean McMullen hit a fly ball to left field, deep enough to score Martin from third and give Quad Cities the 1-0 lead against right-hander Justin Anderson (6-6).
Burlington (7-13 second half, 42-46 overall) recorded its first base hit in the fifth inning. After third baseman Zach Houchins and designated hitter Steven Mateo drew walks, left fielder Trevor Gretzky lined a ball to right field to score the lead runner Houchins, advancing Mateo to third. Center fielder Michal Hermosillo added to the lead two batters later with a two-run single to left field, scoring both Mateo and Gretzky to put the Bees ahead 3-1.
The River Bandits responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a fly ball to right field that dropped in front of right fielder Trever Allen to score first baseman Trent Woodward, but that was the last run on the board. In the sixth inning, Martin hit a leadoff double, but on Ritchie's single to right field, Allen threw home to retire Martin. Anderson went six innings, allowing two runs - one earned - on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
In the seventh inning, back-to-back one out singles by shortstop Kristian Trompiz and third baseman Luis Reynoso put the tying run in scoring position, before second baseman Alex Hernandez flied out to right field, and center fielder Bobby Boyd grounded out to first base.
After the bottom of the seventh inning, the game became heated in another fashion, as an argument in front of the River Bandits' third-base dugout led to the ejections of Burlington manager Chad Tracy, Quad Cities manager Josh Bonifay, and Quad Cities outfield and baserunning specialist and first base coach Tim Garland.
Quad Cities put the potential tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to advance the runner safely past first base. Piche went two scoreless innings, and Paredes pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth inning for his 14th save.

FERRELL'S 7 NO-HIT INNINGS PUSH BANDITS PAST BEES

After the season's longest outing by River Bandits starter, Angel Heredia stems Burlington's late rally in 3-2 win

DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 12, 2015) - River Bandits starter Justin Ferrell carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, striking out five and walking four, and the Quad Cities offense racked up double-digit hits for the third straight game in the series, as the Quad Cities River Bandits beat the Burlington Bees, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport.

Ferrell's career-best start of 7 1/3 innings was the longest by a River Bandit since Michael Feliz went eight innings last Aug. 5 aginst Burlington. The no-hitter to start the eighth inning Sunday was the deepest Quad Cities had carried a no-hitter since April 30, 2011, when Anthony Ferrara pitched seven no-hit innings against Cedar Rapids, before Boone Whiting allowed a one-out hit in the eighth inning of a 2-0, one-hit win.

Burlington right fielder Natanael Delgado ended the no-hitter with a double down the third-base line after Ferrell (2-2) began the eighth inning with a leadoff walk to catcher Wade Wass. With runners at second and third bases, Ferrell allowed a sharply hit single to left field by the next batter, first baseman Steven Mateo, to score the Bees' first run. Center fielder Michael Hermosillo then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, cutting the Quad Cities lead to 3-2. Ferrell was charged with two earned runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Right-hander Angel Heredia entered with the tying run at first base and one out in the eighth inning. Burlington shortstop Jake Yacinich and second baseman Erick Salcedo reached on consecutive singles to load the bases with one out, but Heredia shut the door, striking out third baseman Nick Flair and getting left fielder Trever Allen to pop out to second base to curb the rally and keep the Bandits ahead, 3-2. Heredia then retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the win for Ferrell and notch his fourth save of the season.

Quad Cities (11-7 second half, 56-30 overall) scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game on an RBI groundout by catcher Jamie Ritchie to score center fielder Bobby Boyd. Boyd had reached on a base hit to start the inning and advanced all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Burlington starter Keynan Middleton (4-6). Sean McMullen's solo home run in the second inning - his fifth of the year - extended the lead to 2-0. The lead became 3-0 in the seventh inning, after second baseman Kristian Trompiz doubled to left-center field to plate first baseman Ryan Bottger, who drew a leadoff walk to start the inning.

Burlington (6-12, 41-46) almost began the game with a hit, as shortstop Jake Yacinich lined a ball into right-center field that was caught by right fielder Ramon Laureano on a head-first dive. Third baseman Nick Tanielu also kept a hit off the board in the sixth inning, when he barehanded a ball bunted up the third-base line by Bees second baseman Erick Salcedo.

The four-game series between Burlington and the River Bandits wraps up Monday at 7 p.m., as right-handers Justin Anderson (5-6, 3.10) of Burlington and David Paulino (1-1, 1.80) of Quad Cities square off on the mound.

UP NEXT: Gates open at 6 p.m. for the ADA 25th Anniversary Celebration, which will include a pregame parade of ADA athletes. The 7 p.m. game is Military Monday presented by Performance Food Group, 97X and ESPN 93.5. BEES USE LATE UNEARNED RUNS TO BEAT BANDITS

Eight River Bandits collect hits, but Quad Cities matches a season high by committing four errors

DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 11, 2015) - Every player in the starting lineup had a hit for the Burlington Bees, who used a five-run second inning and three unearned runs over the seventh and eighth innings to break a 5-5 tie and defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits, 8-5, in front of 3,216 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.

With a chance to move their overall record 27 games above .500 for the first time in five seasons, the River Bandits (10-7 second half, 55-30 overall) scored in each of the first three innings and had eight players contribute to outhitting Burlington, 13-11, but the home team also committed four errors, matching a season high set April 28 against Cedar Rapids.

In each of the first two games of the four-game series, the team scoring first has lost. Quad Cities took the lead in the first inning Saturday against Bees right-hander Austin Robichaux. A leadoff walk by center fielder Bobby Boyd and single to left field by shortstop Alex Bregman put runners at first and third bases. Bregman stole second base, before first baseman Nick Tanielu lifted an RBI double toward the right-field corner. Boyd scored, and Bregman went to third base, with right fielder Ramon Laureano grounding out to score Bregman. Robichaux went only one scheduled inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits and one walk with no strikeouts.

River Bandits right-hander Brandon McNitt took a 2-0 lead to the mound in the second inning, when the Bees began with six straight hits. Third baseman Zach Houchins doubled down the left-field line, before catcher Wade Wass and first baseman Steven Mateo homered to the Modern Woodmen Berm in left field on consecutive pitches to give Burlington a 3-2 lead. Left fielder Erick Salcedo then put a bunt single down the third-base line and went to third base when center fielder Michael Hermosillo doubled to right-center field. Second baseman Tim Arakawa capped the six-hit streak with a two-run single to right field, giving his team a 5-2 lead. After a double play, designated hitter Nick Flair single to right field for the inning's seventh hit - a single-inning high against Quad Cities this season.

The River Bandits answered in the bottom of the inning against Bees right-hander Michael Bolaski (5-6). Third baseman Luis Reynoso drew a two-out walk, followed by consecutive singles from Boyd and Bregman to make it 5-3. In the third inning, Laureano hit an infield single to third base, and left fielder Jason Martin launched his sixth home run of the season over the ribbon board in right field to tie the game. Bolaski scattered four singles over the rest of his five-inning outing, in which he was charged with three earned runs on eight hits.

McNitt held Burlington scoreless for the final four innings of his second straight six-inning start. He was charged with five earned runs on nine hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Left-hander Michael Freeman inherited the 5-5 tie to start the seventh inning. Bees shortstop Jake Yacinich drew a one-out walk, went to second base on a wild pitch and third base on a groundout, before scoring when Bregman dropped a ground ball on the grass in front of second base. In the eighth inning, Mateo walked, and Bregman missed a ground ball by Salcedo that went into left-center field, from where Martin overthrew second base for the play's second error. Mateo scored, and Salcedo reached third base, eventually scoring when Arakawa collected his game-high third RBI on a single to left field off Freeman, his college teammate at Oklahoma State. Freeman was charged with three unearned runs on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings.

Bees right-hander Jordan Piche allowed Quad Cities to load the bases with two outs in the eighth inning, but right-hander Jacob Kopra got Tanielu to ground into a fielder's choice. Right-hander Eduardo Paredes pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 13th save.

BANDITS BASH 13 HITS, HOLD BEES TO UNEARNED RUN

Quad Cities posts six-run sixth to support Christian Powell's season-high six-inning start

DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 10, 2015) - River Bandits shortstop Alex Bregman had a bases-clearing double as part of a six-run sixth inning, and three Quad Cities pitchers combined to hold Burlington to one run as the Quad Cities River Bandits defeated the Burlington Bees, 9-1, in front of 6,401 at Modern Woodmen Park Friday night.

Quad Cities right-hander Christian Powell (2-0) only allowed an unearned run in a season-high six innings, and the River Bandits scored their most runs in a week to match a season-best mark of 26 games above .500 (55-29 overall, 10-6 second half).

The three runs batted in for Bregman is a career high for the 2015 No. 2 overall pick, who made his professional debut with the River Bandits June 26. With Quad Cities already leading 5-1 in the sixth, Bregman lined a ball down the left-field line to score second baseman Alex Hernandez, left fielder Jason Martin, and catcher Jamie Ritchie, extending the River Bandits' lead to seven runs. Bregman scored on an RBI single by center fielder Ramon Laureano against Burlington reliever Gaither Bumgardner to make the score 9-1.

Burlington (40-45, 5-11) jumped out in front in the first inning on a rally started by a Hernandez fielding error that allowed second baseman Tim Arakawa to reach. After being bunted into scoring position by shortstop Jake Yacinich, Arakawa scored the game's first run on a two-out single by left fielder Trever Allen. Powell buckled down from there, not allowing another runner past second in his six innings, finishing with five hits allowed, no earned runs, and three strikeouts.

The River Bandits answered in the bottom of the first inning against Bees starter Jake Jewell (4-5). Third baseman Nick Tanielu doubled home Ritchie and Bregman, who reached on a single and a hit-by-pitch, respectively. The two-run, two-bagger by Tanielu - his 15th of the year - was enough for Quad Cities, which got shutout relief pitching from Riley Ferrell and Ryan Thompson, who combined to allow just one hit in the final three innings of the game.

Quad Cities added a fifth-inning run when left fielder Jason Martin had his first of two singles and stole second and third bases on the next two pitches to Ritchie, before scoring on Ritchie's single to right-center field for a 3-1 lead.

The sixth-inning rally for the River Bandits began against reliever Jason Hoppe with a single by designated hitter Trent Woodward, who had two hits on the night. Right fielder Sean McMullen followed with a hit of his own, and with first baseman Ryan Bottger batting, both runners advanced on a passed ball by Bees catcher Brandon Gildea. On a wild pitch later in the at-bat, Woodward scored and McMullen moved to third base. Bottger flied out to right field, just deep enough for McMullen to tag and slide in safely at the plate in front of the throw by right fielder Natanel Delgado. Hitting with the bases empty and one out, Hernandez and Martin each singled, and Ritchie walked, knocking Hoppe out of the game, and setting up the bases-loaded matchup between Bregman and Bumgardner.

BANDITS FINISH MARTES' STRONG START IN CLINTON

Quad Cities draws a season-high 11 bases on balls to remain unbeaten in road series this season

CLINTON, Iowa (July 9, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Francis Martes retired the first 13 batters of the game but nearly lost a three-run lead, before two late-inning double plays and a ninth-inning, three-run home run by left fielder Sean McMullen sealed the visitors' 6-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings at Ashford University Field Thursday night.

In their final regular season game in Clinton, the River Bandits (9-6 second half, 54-29 overall) split the four-game, split-city series with the LumberKings (5-10, 31-53) and split two games at Ashford University Field to remain unbeaten in road series this season.

After scoring four runs over the first three games of the series, Quad Cities scored twice in the first inning off LumberKings All-Star right-hander Lukas Schiraldi (4-6). Center fielder Bobby Boyd hit a leadoff single to left field and stole second base with All-Star catcher Jamie Ritchie batting. Ritchie ended a seven-pitch at-bat by lining a single to right field to score Boyd with the River Bandits' first run in their last 14 opening innings. Shortstop Alex Bregman lined to first baseman Pat Leyland, who doubled Ritchie off first base to clear the bases with two outs. All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu restarted the rally with a single to right field, and right fielder Ramon Laureano walked, before designated hitter Jason Martin grounded an RBI single into center field for a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Tanielu and Laureano hit back-to-back one-out singles to start another rally. Martin flied out to center field for the second out, but Schiraldi walked McMullen to load the bases before throwing a wild pitch to score Tanielu for a 3-0 lead. Schiraldi was removed after three innings, in which he allowed three earned runs on six hits and four walks with one strikeout.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Martes (3-2) finally allowed his first baserunner, as LumberKings designated hitter Chantz Mack drove a double to the left-center field wall. Martes then struck out third baseman Joe DeCarlo to extend his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings, before right fielder Taylor Zeutenhorst broke the string by grounding an RBI double down the first-base line to make it 3-1.

Martes retired the next five batters before Leyland singled to right field with one out in the seventh inning. Mack then singled through a shifted infield to the right of second base, and Martes threw a wild pitch to move Leyland and Mack into scoring position. After hitting DeCarlo with a pitch to load the bases, Martes exited for right-hander Angel Heredia. Zeutenhorst greeted Heredia by ending the reliever's nine-inning hitless streak with a single to left-center field to score Leyland and make it 3-2. With one out and the bases loaded, catcher James Alfonso hit a soft line drive to Bregman, who threw to second baseman Kristian Trompiz to double off DeCarlo and end the inning.

Heredia allowed a leadoff walk in the eighth inning, before getting center fielder Austin Cousino to ground to Bregman for a double play, which began a stretch in which he retired the final five batters of the game for his third save in three opportunities this season.

After Schiraldi, LumberKings right-hander Thyago Vieira worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and right-hander Hawtin Buchanan followed with 2 2/3 scoreless innings. In the ninth inning with a 3-2 deficit, Clinton put Zeutenhorst on the mound, replacing him in right field with All-Star Estarlyn Morales. Zeutenhorst began by walking Laureano and Martin, before McMullen hit a 1-1 pitch to the Lumber Lounge in right field for his fourth home run of the season and a 6-2 lead. Zeutenhorst, who drove in both Clinton runs earlier in the game, retired the next three batters to finish one inning. The River Bandits drew two walks off Zeutenhorst and had a season-high 11 walks Thursday.

The River Bandits open their final scheduled four-game series of the season Friday at 7 p.m. against Burlington at Modern Woodmen Park. River Bandits right-hander Christian Powell (1-0) is scheduled to face Bees right-hander Jake Jewell (4-4).

Clinton holds Quad Cities to combined two runs on four hits in doubleheader split
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 8, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-handers David Paulino and Ryan Thompson combined for a 1-0, seven-inning shutout in Game 1 of a doubleheader Tuesday, but Clinton LumberKings left-hander Jarrett Brown and right-hander Kody Kerski combined to limit the home team to one hit in a 6-1, seven-inning Game 2 win in front of 3,789 at Modern Woodmen Park.
In his second Midwest League start, Paulino (1-1) matched a career high with six innings while scattering five hits with no walks and a season-high eight strikeouts. Thompson pitched a perfect seventh inning for his third save for Quad Cities (8-5 second half, 53-28 overall).
The LumberKings (4-9, 30-52) only put two runners in scoring position in Game 1. Both came in the first two innings, and no baserunner reached third base. Shortstop Chris Mariscal hit a single to center field with one out in the first inning, and designated hitter Pat Leyland hit a two-out infield single behind second base. With runners at first and second bases, right fielder Taylor Zeutenhorst hit the 11th pitch of his at-bat for an inning-ending flyout to center field. In the second inning, catcher Wayne Taylor singled with one out and went to second on a groundout, but Paulino got second baseman Gianfranco Wawoe to ground out to end the inning.
Clinton right-hander Tyler Herb (4-5) retired the first six River Bandits he faced before allowing a third-inning leadoff walk to designated hitter Sean McMullen. First baseman Trent Woodward grounded into a fielder's choice, went to second base on a wild pitch and scored on center fielder Bobby Boyd's single into center field for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead. All-Star catcher Jamie Ritchie then walked, ending Herb's outing after 2 2/3 innings, in which he allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout. Right-hander Osmer Morales allowed two hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings, but Quad Cities won its second 1-0 game this season and first since May 30 in Burlington.
In Game 2, the LumberKings found the scoreboard in the first inning against right-hander Justin Ferrell (1-2). Designated hitter Austin Cousino led off with a single to center field, before center fielder Arby Fields bunted into a fielder's choice. Mariscal singled to center field, and left fielder Chantz Mack grounded into a fielder's choice that left runners at first and third bases with two outs. Ferrell's wild pitch put Mack at second base, and All-Star right fielder Estarlyn Morales grounded a single into center field, scoring Fields and Mack for a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, LumberKings first baseman Kristian Brito drew a leadoff walk, catcher James Alfonso singled to left field, and second baseman Martin Peguero bunted into a fielder's choice at third base. Cousino then hit an RBI double to right field, and Fields added an RBI groundout. In the top of the third inning, Mack drew a leadoff walk, went to second base on Morales' single and reached third base on Woodward's passed ball. Third baseman Joe DeCarlo hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Mack. Ferrell was charged with five runs - four earned - on six hits and three walks without a strikeout in three innings. Left-hander Michael Freeman went a career-high three innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk with one strikeout, and right-hander Riley Ferrell pitched one scoreless frame.
Brown allowed a first-inning leadoff single to right field by River Bandits All-Star and designated hitter Nick Tanielu, who batted in the leadoff spot for the first time in his professional career. Brown then picked off Tanielu, and the tying run never came to bat the rest of the way, as Brown worked around a walk and two errors for the rest of his four shutout innings. Kerski (2-2) worked the last three innings, allowing the only Quad Cities run after walking Woodward in the fifth inning, with an error and groundout scoring the run to make it 6-1.
After snapping its seven-game losing streak Tuesday, Clinton will host the River Bandits for the final two games of their split-city, four-game series at Ashord University Field Wednesday and Thursday. River Bandits right-hander Joshua James (2-1) is scheduled to face LumberKings left-hander Pat Peterson (4-4) in Wednesday's 6:30 p.m. game.
