Right-hander becomes first River Bandits reliever since 2010 to win weekly honor
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 6, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Angel Heredia has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for his performance during the week of June 29-July 5, the Midwest League announced on Monday.
Heredia, 22, is the first River Bandit to win Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors this season. He is the second River Bandit honored with a Midwest League weekly award this season. Infielder Mott Hyde was the Midwest League Player of the Week for April 27-May 3. Heredia is the first River Bandit to win Pitcher of the Week for the Midwest League since Michael Feliz won Pitcher of the Week for last Aug. 4-10. Heredia is the club's first relief pitcher to win a weekly award since Daniel Calhoun won for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 2010.
During the week, Heredia made two relief appearances for a total of 7 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings, walking three batters, striking out nine and earning one victory. He pitched four no-hit innings Tuesday against Beloit in the completion of Monday's suspended game and went 3 2/3 no-hit innings for a win in Peoria on Saturday. Heredia has not allowed a hit in his last nine innings pitched - a streak that is the longest by a River Bandit since Mitch Lambson pitched 11 1/3 consecutive hitless innings in parts of five appearances Aug. 16-30, 2013.
In 10 appearances since joining the River Bandits from Extended Spring Training May 24, Heredia is 3-1 with two saves, a 0.96 ERA, nine walks and 22 strikeouts, while allowing only five hits - a .082 opponents batting average - in 18 2/3 innings.
A native of Palenque in the Dominican Republic, Heredia was signed by the Houston Astros as a non-drafted free agent April 20, 2012. His previous awards include the Dominican Summer League (DSL) Astros Pitcher of the Month in June and August 2013, a DSL All-Star selection in 2013, and the rookie-level Greeneville Astros Pitcher of the Month in July 2014.
Heredia was recognized on the same day three former Quad Cities pitchers were selected as major league All-Stars. Minnesota Twins left-hander Glen Perkins (with Quad Cities in 2004) was named an American League All-Star. Atlanta Braves right-hander Shelby Miller (2009-2010) and St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Trevor Rosenthal (2011) were both named National League All-Stars. St. Louis Cardinals  right-hander Carlos Martinez (2011) was named one of five candidates in the Final Vote for a spot on the National League roster.

PERDOMO'S 8 SHUTOUT INNINGS BEAT BANDITS

Peoria wins, 7-1, to deny Quad Cities a sweep of four-game, split-city series

PEORIA, Ill. (July 5, 2015) - Peoria Chiefs All-Star right-hander Luis Perdomo matched a career high with eight shutout innings and struck out eight Quad Cities River Bandits, while first baseman Alex De Leon hit a two-run home run to begin the home team's scoring in the second inning of a 7-1 win that avoided a four-game, split-city series sweep by the River Bandits at Dozer Park Sunday afternoon.

Perdomo (4-7) yielded one walk and five singles without allowing a baserunner to reach third base. Only two reached second base in the first eight innings for Quad Cities (7-4 second half, 52-27 overall). After center fielder Bobby Boyd's leadoff single to center field in the first inning, Perdomo retired seven straight batters. Third baseman Luis Reynoso hit a third-inning, one-out single to right field, but Perdomo again responded by retiring seven in a row. Second baseman Alex Hernandez singled to left field in the fifth inning, followed by Perdomo setting down five batteres in order. In the seventh inning with one out, right fielder Sean McMullen put a bunt single to the third-base side of the pitcher's mound, and shortstop Kristian Trompiz added a two-out single, but Hernandez flied out to center field, and Perdomo finished his outing by retiring the last four batters he faced.

Peoria (4-7, 37-42) took the lead for the first time in the four-game series in the bottom of the second inning against River Bandits right-hander Brandon McNitt (1-3). Right fielder Nick Thompson led off with a single to center field, and De Leon drove a ball to the top of the left-center-field wall, scoring Thompson. Base umpire Tyler Olson initially ruled the ball did not go over the yellow line at the top of the fence, but upon conference with home plate umpire Brock Ballou, the pair overturned the initial call, awarding De Leon his seventh home run and Peoria a 2-0 lead. Catcher Luis Cruz immediately followed with single to right field and went to second base when left fielder Kenny Peoples-Walls walked with one out. Center fielder Jhohan Acevedo chopped a single into center field to score Cruz, and second baseman Andrew Sohn added an RBI single to left field for a 4-0 lead. All-Star shortstop Oscar Mercado grounded a single to Trompiz in the shortstop hole - the sixth hit of the inning - but Hernandez caught Trompiz's throw at second base and threw to Reynoso at third base for the inning-ending tag of Acevedo.

The Chiefs added to their 4-0 lead in the fourth inning, when third baseman Jake Gronsky walked and Peoples-Walls doubled to left field, putting two runners in scoring position. Acevedo lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, and designated hitter Darren Seferina grounded an RBI single down the third-base line for a 6-0 edge.

McNitt also allowed the final Peoria run in the sixth inning. Peoples-Walls reached on Reynoso's throwing error, Seferina walked, and a wild pitch advanced both baserunners. With the infield in, Sohn grounded to Trompiz, whose initial bobble gave him only a play at first base, so Peoples-Walls scored his game-high third run without a throw. In a career-high six innings, McNitt also allowed career highs of seven runs, six earned runs, nine hits and five walks, which set a season high by a River Bandits pitcher.

Following McNitt, right-hander Eric Peterson struck out three batters in two perfect innings. Chiefs right-hander Kyle Grana began the ninth inning with the 7-0 lead and retired the first two batters. But the River Bandits - who had lost a home shutout bid with two outs in the ninth inning Friday against Peoria - denied the Chiefs a combined shutout with two outs in the ninth inning. Grana hit catcher Trent Woodward, Trompiz walked and Mercado misplayed Hernandez's one-hop ground ball, which reached left-center field and allowed Woodward to score. Reynoso then flied out to right field to close Peoria's fourth win in 14 meetings with Quad Cities this season.

The River Bandits begin their second consecutive four-game, split-city series by hosting Clinton for two games Monday and Tuesday. River Bandits right-hander David Paulino (0-1) is scheduled to face LumberKings right-hander Tyler Herb (4-4) at 7 p.m. Monday.

UP NEXT: Gates open at 6 p.m. on Military Monday presented by Performance Food Group, 97X and ESPN 93.5. LAUREANO'S BLAST BEATS FIREWORKS, CHIEFS

River Bandits move 26 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2010 season

PEORIA, Ill. (July 4, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits outfielder Ramon Laureano hit a three-run, go-ahead home run in the top of the 11th inning, two minutes before a Fourth of July fireworks show began over the Illinois River in downtown Peoria beyond the first-base side of Dozer Park, and with fireworks continuing, the visitors won an 8-5, 11-inning final over the Peoria Chiefs Saturday night.

Shortstop Alex Bregman and All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu each had three hits to help the River Bandits (7-3 second half, 52-26 overall) win their third straight game and move 26 games above .500 for the first time since finishing 28 games above .500 (83-55) in 2010. Among the affiliates of all 30 major league organizations, only the Houston Astros Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks (53-26 in the Texas League) had a better record than Quad Cities through Saturday. The River Bandits won for the 10th time in 13 games this season against Peoria (3-7, 36-42) and has not trailed in the first three games of the current series with the Chiefs.

Quad Cities took its first lead in the second inning against Chiefs left-hander Dewin Perez. Designated hitter Trent Woodward singled to left field with one out, and center fielder Bobby Boyd drew the first of his career-high three walks. With two outs, All-Star catcher Jamie Ritchie drew his Midwest League-leading 66th walk to load the bases, and Bregman laced a two-run double down the left-field line for a 2-0 lead. Peoria immediately tied the game in the next half-inning against River Bandits right-hander Christian Powell. First baseman Adam Ehrlich and left fielder Kenny Peoples-Walls hit consecutive one-out singles, and center fielder Jhohan Acevedo walked to load the bases before second baseman Darren Seferina lined a two-run, game-tying single to left field.

In a 2-2 tie in the top of the third inning, Laureano doubled to left field to extend his career-high nine-game hitting streak. Third baseman Kristian Trompiz and Woodward both drew walks to load the bases, and Boyd grounded a two-run double down the first-base line to make it 4-2. Perez walked second baseman Luis Reynoso to reload the bases, and right-hander Cody Schumacher entered to allow Ritchie's sacrifice fly to right field for a 5-2 margin. Perez allowed five earned runs on six hits and five walks with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings.

The Chiefs rallied within 5-4 against Powell in the fifth inning. Powell hit designated hitter Andrew Sohn, shortstop Oscar Mercado singled, and right fielder Nick Thompson doubled off the left-center field wall to score two runs. Powell preserved the lead with a strikeout, groundout and lineout to finish five innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Following Powell, right-hander Jorge Perez kept the 5-4 lead by stranding two runners in the sixth inning, but in the eighth inning, the Chiefs evened the score and had their best chance to take the lead. Perez hit Acevedo with one out, Seferina reached on Trompiz's error at second base, and Sohn lined a game-tying double to left field, ending Perez's outing after allowing one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Right-hander Angel Heredia (3-1) entered with one out, the infield in and runners at second and third bases in a 5-5 tie. Mercado lined a 3-2 pitch to Bregman, who threw to All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu to double off Seferina and end the inning with the tie. Heredia allowed one walk in the final 3 2/3 hitless innings and has not allowed a hit in his last nine innings since June 20.

The pivotal top of the 11th inning began with Bregman walking against right-hander Robby Rowland (2-3) and Tanielu hitting a single to left field. Bregman ran to third base on the play, drawing a throw that allowed Tanielu to reach second base. With the infield in, Rowland struck out Bottger before Laureano set a career high of three RBIs with one swing that sent a drive to the berm beyond the left-field fence.

BANDITS ROUT CHIEFS BEFORE RECORD-SETTING CROWD
Quad Cities hosts largest home crowd in six years, has zero strikeouts at the plate for first time in eight seasons
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 4, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Francis Martes struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings Friday night, while his team's offense had 12 hits, eight walks and zero strikeouts - the fewest for the club in eight seasons - in a 9-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs in front of 7,403 - the largest crowd at Modern Woodmen Park in exactly six years.
Martes (2-2) has not allowed a run in his last 11 2/3 innings for Quad Cities (6-3 second half, 51-26 overall), which matched a season high by moving 25 games above .500. Martes combined with right-handers Riley Ferrell and Ryan Thompson to keep the Chiefs (3-6, 36-41) scoreless until two outs in the ninth inning, when three straight singles ended the River Bandits pitching staff's scoreless streak at 21 innings. Martes faced the minimum in the first three innings, striking out four batters and getting help from a second-inning double play turned by shortstop Alex Bregman, who turned two double plays in the game and had his first career three-hit game.
Bregman and River Bandits All-Star catcher Jamie Ritchie each had three hits and three runs scored, and they began the rallies in each of the three innings the River Bandits scored. In a scoreless game entering the bottom of the third inning, Ritchie led off by drawing his Midwest League-leading 65th walk against Chiefs right-hander and former River Bandit Jhonny Polanco (1-2). Bregman singled to left field, before left fielder Jason Martin singled to right field to score Ritchie and send Bregman to third base, while Martin went to second base on the throw to home plate. All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for a 2-0 lead. Polanco later hit designated hitter Sean McMullen and walked first baseman Ryan Bottger to load the bases. That brought in right-hander Nick Frey, whose first pitch center fielder Bobby Boyd grounded into center field, scoring Martin and McMullen for a 4-0 lead. The inning ended with Bottger thrown out at third base. Polanco was charged with four earned runs on three hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ritchie and Bregman hit consecutive one-out singles to left field, and Frey's wild pitch put both in scoring position. After Martin drew an intentional walk, Tanielu hit his second sacrifice fly to center field to score Ritchie and move Bregman to third base. Laureano followed with an RBI single to left field, scoring Bregman for a 6-0 lead and extending Laureano's career-best eight-game hitting streak. But left fielder Kenny Peoples-Walls threw out Martin at home plate to end the inning.
The Chiefs put runners in scoring position twice against Martes. In the fourth inning, Martes allowed a walk and single before retiring three straight batters to end the inning. In the sixth inning, a one-out walk and single put runners at first and third bases, but right fielder Nick Thompson's line drive struck baserunner Andrew Sohn for the second out, and Martes finished the inning with his 10th strikeout.
The River Bandits added three runs in the bottom of the sixth against right-hander Anderson Gerdel, as Ritchie, Bregman and Martin began with three straight singles to bring in one run, and Laureano and Bottger each had RBI singles to build a 9-0 lead. That remained through Ferrell's two scoreless innings and Thompson's ninth inning until three straight two-out singles by catcher Steve Bean, third baseman Jake Gronsky and first baseman Adam Ehrlich provided Peoria's first run in the series, but Thompson got a game-ending groundout.
Quad Cities had 11 singles among its 12 hits and did not strike out in a game for the first time since July 8, 2007, when Beloit pitchers failed to strike out a Quad Cities batter over eight innings in a 9-4 Quad Cities home win. Friday's attendance was the second-largest at home for Quad Cities since the start of the 2002 season and the largest since a crowd of 7,538 on July 3, 2009.

Shortstop led all AL rookies in OPS, slugging, RBI and doubles in June

HOUSTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for June.

Correa is just the sixth Astros player ever to win a Rookie of the Month Award and the third in the last two seasons, joining right-handed pitcher Collin McHugh (September 2014) and outfielder George Springer (May 2014). Correa is also the second Astros player to win an American League monthly award this season, as left-handed pitcher Dallas Keuchel won the AL Pitcher of the Month in April and May.

Correa, who debuted on June 8, hit .287 (27x94) with nine doubles, five home runs, 15 RBI, four stolen bases and a .543 slugging percentage in his 21 games in the month. Among AL rookies in June, Correa ranked first in OPS (.852), doubles, RBI and in slugging percentage. Additionally, he ranked tied for first in home runs and third in hits and in batting average.

Defensively, Correa has committed just one error in his 83 total chances this season for a .988 fielding percentage.

At 20 years old, Correa is the youngest position player to play in the Major Leagues this season. He's also the youngest player to ever start a game at shortstop for the Astros and the youngest position player for Houston since infielder Derrel Thomas debuted for the club in 1971.

Pitcher turning 21 goes career-high seven innings in club's fastest nine-inning game since at least 2004
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 2, 2015) - Pitching on his 21st birthday, Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn went a career-high seven innings, and left-hander Jordan Mills retired six straight batters to finish a 2-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs in one hour, 49 minutes - the shortest nine-inning game for Quad Cities since at least 2004 - in front of 6,982 at Modern Woodmen Park Thursday night.
A Goderich, Ontario, native, Dykxhoorn (5-3) made his final start before joining Team Canada for the 2015 Pan Am Games later this month in Toronto. Also one day after Canada Day, he allowed three hits and struck out three batters to help Quad Cities (5-3 second half, 50-26 overall) become the first Midwest League team to 50 wins this season.
While no pitcher walked a batter Thursday, the Chiefs (3-5, 36-40) managed three hits and one runner in scoring position the entire game, and it came in the first inning. Second baseman Darren Seferina led off against Dykxhoorn with a single to left field. Right fielder Nick Thompson and All-Star shortstop Oscar Mercado hit consecutive flyouts to right fielder Sean McMullen. With first baseman Alex De Leon batting, Seferina stole second base and went to third base when catcher Trent Woodward's throw went into center field. On the next pitch, De Leon flied out to center fielder Bobby Boyd to end the inning. Peoria did not move a runner past first base for the rest of the game.
Chiefs right-hander Matt Pearce (3-9) also stranded a River Bandit in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning. All-Star Jamie Ritchie hit a leadoff single to right field, and shortstop Alex Bregman reached on an infield single to third baseman Andrew Sohn. But Pearce struck out left fielder Jason Martin and got All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Pearce retired eight River Bandits in a row to keep the game scoreless until two outs in the third inning, when Ritchie hit his fourth home run of the season on a fly ball just in front of the Built Ford Tough Deck in right field for a 1-0 Quad Cities lead. The River Bandits added a run in the next inning. Tanielu hit a one-out double to right-center field, went to third base on designated hitter Ramon Laureano's flyout to center field and scored on right fielder Sean McMullen's line-drive single to right field to make it 2-0.
Pearce was charged with two earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters in 6 2/3 innings, but he lost his seventh straight start. Chiefs right-hander Kyle Grana retired all four batters he faced on groundouts in 1 1/3 relief innings.
By retiring three straight batters to end the first inning, Dykxhoorn began a stretch of retiring 15 Chiefs in order before Sohn led off the sixth inning with a single to left field. Dykxhoorn retired the next four batters before De Leon singled to center field with one out in the seventh inning. Dykxhoorn then got a flyout and fielder's choice to finish the frame. Prior to Thursday, Dykxhoorn's career-long outing was six innings, but he lasted seven on Thursday to extend his 11-inning scoreless streak against Peoria.
Mills began the eighth inning in relief of Dykxhoorn and set down all six batters he faced - including three on strikeouts - to earn his second save of the season. The shutout was the River Bandits' eighth this season, tying Bowling Green for the Midwest League high and marking the most for Quad Cities since it posted nine shutout victories in 2011.
The River Bandits conclude their homestand at 7 p.m. Friday at Modern Woodmen Park with the second game of a split-city, four-game series against Peoria. River Bandits right-hander Francis Martes (1-2) is scheduled to face Chiefs right-hander and former River Bandit Jhonny Polanco (1-1). The two teams will finish the series in Peoria on Saturday and Sunday.

Six unearned runs aid the Snappers in 9-4 rubber match victory
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 1, 2015) - Beloit Snappers third baseman Jose Brizuela opened the scoring Wednesday night with a two-run home run in the second inning, and right fielder Justin Higley capped a six-run third inning with the first grand slam against the Quad Cities River Bandits this season in a 9-4 series rubber match victory in front of 6,137 at Modern Woodmen Park.
Led by first baseman Trent Woodward's career-high four hits, the River Bandits (4-3 second half, 49-26 overall) outhit Beloit, 13-10, but the Snappers (3-4, 29-48) became the first team since Peoria in a May 25 doubleheader to win consecutive games against Quad Cities. Beloit won a series at Modern Woodmen Park for the first time since a four-game sweep May 17-20, 2013, while the River Bandits lost their fourth series overall this season. All four have been at home.
The Snappers' scoring began in the second inning against River Bandits right-hander Justin Ferrell (1-1). All-Star Sandber Pimentel hit a leadoff ground ball to shifted second baseman Kristian Trompiz, who overthrew to first base. Two batters later, Brizuela hit a one-out drive just in front of the Built Ford Tough Deck in right field for his fifth home run of the season. The River Bandits came closest to tying the game against right-hander Junior Mendez (2-6) in the bottom of the second inning, when center fielder Ramon Laureano grounded a double down the first-base line, and right fielder Sean McMullen hit an RBI double to right-center field. With the tying run at second base, Trompiz grounded out to end the inning with a 2-1 Beloit lead.
Beloit blew the game open when it brought 10 batters to the plate in the third inning against Ferrell. With one out, center fielder James Harris hit a double to right-center field and went to third base on Ferrell's wild pitch. All-Star second baseman Trent Gilbert walked, and with runners at first and third bases, All-Star shortstop Yairo Munoz reached when All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu mishandled a ground ball that scored Harris. Ferrell hit Pimentel with a pitch to load the bases. After left fielder Joe Bennie lined out, Brizuela hit an infield single to the infield grass on the third-base side that made it 4-1. Higley then smacked a 3-1 pitch to the Miller Lite Party Deck in right field for an 8-1 Beloit lead. Ferrell was charged with eight runs - two earned - on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts and lasted until two outs in the top of the fifth inning in his first start at Modern Woodmen Park.
Following Ferrell, right-hander Joshua James worked the final 4 1/3 relief innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Beloit's run off James came in the sixth inning, when Harris hit a one-out single to right field, went to second base on Gilbert's walk and scored on Pimentel's two-out single to left field for a 9-1 Snappers lead.
Mendez held the Beloit lead with a stretch of retiring eight batters in a row and not allowing a runner to reach third base from the third through fifth innings. In the sixth inning, Tanielu hit an infield single, and left fielder Jason Martin launched a two-run home run - his fifth of the season to lead all active River Bandits - to the Built Ford Tough Deck to cut the deficit to 9-3. Mendez allowed three earned runs on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts in six innings. He was the winning pitcher in Beloit's first series victory overall against Quad Cities since May 2-4, 2014, when Mendez also won the rubber match of a three-game series at Pohlman Field in Beloit, Wis.
From the Snappers bullpen, right-hander Kevin Johnson scattered three hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. In the ninth inning, right-hander Rob Huber allowed Woodward's fourth single and a run that scored on Martin's bases-loaded groundout before the 9-4 final.
The River Bandits open a four-game, split-city series with the Peoria Chiefs at 7 p.m. Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park. The games Thursday and Friday will be at Modern Woodmen Park, followed by games Saturday and Sunday at Dozer Park in Peoria.
UP NEXT: Fans can tour the new home of the Quad Cities Sports Hall of Fame on the suite level of Modern Woodmen Park when gates open at 6 p.m. Thursday on Quad-City Times Night. Beloit has ended Quad Cities' three longest winning streaks this season
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 1, 2015) - Completing Monday's suspended game, the Quad Cities River Bandits got a walk-off single from first baseman Ryan Bottger in the 12th inning for a 2-1 win, but Beloit Snappers right-hander Daniel Gossett pitched his club's first complete game this season in the ensuing game for a 4-1, seven-inning victory in front of 2,553 at Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday night.
Beloit (2-4 second half, 28-48 overall) has snapped each of the three longest winning streaks by Quad Cities (4-2, 49-25) this season. The River Bandits' season-high 12-game winning streak ended against the Snappers May 12, and a five-game winning streak ended in Beloit April 17. Tuesday's loss ended Quad Cities' four-game winning streak.
The teams resumed Monday's suspended game with the River Bandits holding a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Left-hander Michael Freeman held the lead for 2 2/3 innings, retiring eight of the nine batters he faced without allowing a hit.
The Snappers tied the game, 1-1, in top of the seventh inning against right-hander Riley Ferrell, who made his professional debut. Snappers third baseman Jose Brizuela hit a leadoff double to right field, went to third base on a wild pitch and scored when left fielder Justin Higley hit a two-out single to right field. Ferrell was charged with one earned run on two hits with one strikeout in a one-inning appearance.
After the seventh inning, Beloit never moved a runner past first base. River Bandits right-hander Angel Heredia turned in a season-high four hitless innings while walking two batters and striking out five. Left-hander Jordan Mills (1-2) had one strikeout in a perfect 12th inning. Four Beloit pitchers combined to keep Quad Cities off the scoreboard in the fourth through 11th innings. Right-hander Carlos Navas went two innings, followed by left-hander Jose Torres for 1 2/3 innings, right-hander Koby Gauna for 2 1/3 innings, and right-hander Dominique Vattuone (0-1) for two innings. Quad Cities left runners at second and third bases in the fourth inning and the bases loaded in the seventh and 10th innings without scoring.
In the River Bandits' longest home game of the season - three hours, 38 minutes - shortstop Alex Bregman began the deciding 12th-inning rally with a one-out bloop single to left-center field off Vattuone. A hit-and-run single by All-Star third baseman Nick Tanielu throw the shortstop hole allowed Bregman to reach third base, and following an intentional walk to left fielder Jason Martin that loaded the bases with one out, left-hander Jerad Grundy entered to face Bottger. On the first pitch, Bottger drove a fly ball to the base of the right-field wall, but after touching first base, he passed Martin, which made Bottger the second out of the inning. Although Bregman scored the winning run, it was not until Martin reached second base - to avoid a forceout - that Quad Cities had earned its second walk-off win of the season.
In the regularly schedule game, shortened to seven innings, the Snappers took the lead for good in the second inning against right-hander David Paulino, making his Midwest League debut. With one out, first baseman Max Kuhn and Brizuela hit consecutive singles, and All-Star shortstop Yairo Munoz hit a two-run double to left-center field and advanced to third base on the throw to home plate. An missed catch at first base by Bottger allowed Munoz to score for a 3-0 Beloit lead. Quad Cities tallied its only run in the bottom of the inning, as right fielder Sean McMullen hit a sacrifice fly to score left fielder Ramon Laureano, who had four combined hits in the first two games of the series. Gossett then scattered two more hits and was charged with one earned run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in seven innings to become the first opposing pitcher to win a complete game against the River Bandits this season.
The rubber match and series finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday is scheduled to feature River Bandits right-hander Justin Ferrell (1-0) against Snappers right-hander Junior Mendez (1-6), for what is Beloit's final regular season visit to Modern Woodmen Park this season.

ABOUT THE BANDITS: With the installation of the Ferris Wheel, the River Bandits ownership in 2014 made one of the biggest improvements to Modern Woodmen Park since the ballpark was first built back in 1931, and this year the club is matching that effort by opening three new areas. A two-tiered special group deck immediately behind and overlooking the corn field opened in June. A new 11,000-square-foot concourse expansion down the third-base line will open in July. Finally, the club is expanding the children's play area by an additional 5,500 square feet down the right-field line. New rides will be announced upon completion of these new areas.

RIVER BANDITS RACK UP HITS, WEAR DOWN KERNELS

Alex Bregman hits first professional home run to put Quad Cities a season-best 24 games above .500

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 28, 2015) - River Bandits catcher Jamie Ritchie and left fielder Jason Martin each had three hits, shortstop Alex Bregman hit his first professional home run, and right-hander Christian Powell pitched five innings to defeat his former team, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 6-1, at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Quad Cities (3-1 second half, 48-24 overall) moved its overall record 24 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2013 season by out-hitting the Kernels, 46-29, in the four-game series that was a first round playoff preview. The River Bandits took the final three games of the series after dropping the opener on Thursday. On Sunday, the River Bandits recorded single runs in each of the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings, and they tacked on two additional runs in the ninth.

The scoring started for Quad Cities in the second inning against Kernels starter Zach Tillery (4-3). Second baseman Alex Hernandez ripped a ball back up the middle to score center fielder Ramon Laureano, who tripled in his third consecutive game to begin the second half. The lead was doubled in the third inning on a solo shot by Bregman who smacked an 0-2 pitch from Tillery over the wall in straight-away left field to post his first professional round tripper in his third game as a professional.

The lead became three for the River Bandits in the fourth inning, as Hernandez led off with a walk, followed by designated hitter Bobby Boyd's ground-ball single into center field. Third baseman Luis Reynoso bunted two pitches foul before laying down a sacrifice bunt to move each runner one base, before Ritchie hit a line-drive single to right field to score Hernandez for a 3-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids (2-2, 42-32) answered in the bottom of the fourth against Powell for its only run of the game. Designated hitter Alex Real hit his second home run of the season to the top of the picnic deck in left field.

The Bandits got the run right back for a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning, as Laureano grounded into a double play with Martin on third base and right fielder Ryan Bottger on first. That lead was more than enough for right-hander Francis Martes, who worked four scoreless innings of relief on just one hit to earn his second save in as many chances. The 4-1 score remained until the ninth, when Martin hit an RBI triple off the right-field wall and later scored on a single by Laureano. Martin came within a home run of the cycle Sunday and finished the four-game series 9-for-19 with four runs, three extra-base hits and two RBIs.

The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park Monday to begin a five game homestand, starting with the first of three games against the Beloit Snappers. Right hander Brandon McNitt (1-2, 5.23) starts for the River Bandits, while Heath Fillmyer (0-8, 8.24) will start for the Snappers.

BANDITS USE LATE RUNS TO BEAT KERNELS IN 10 AGAIN

Tanielu has game-tying hit in ninth inning, Boyd and Bregman drive in runs in 10th inning

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 27, 2015) - Down to their final strike twice, the Quad Cities River Bandits rallied to tie the game on back-to-back two out singles by catcher Jacob Nottingham and third baseman Nick Tanielu, and went on to win, 6-4, in 10 innings for the second consecutive game over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Saturday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The ninth-inning rally began for the River Bandits (2-1 second half, 47-24 overall) with a one-out walk drawn by designated hitter Jamie Ritchie against Kernels left-hander Cam Booser (1-2). After a fly ball to right off the bat of shortstop Alex Bregman for the second out, Nottingham singled a 2-2 pitch back up the middle, moving Ritchie to second. Tanielu singled to center field on a 1-2 count that allowed Ritchie to score and tied the game, 4-4.

The Bandits built on their ninth inning rally in the 10th against Booser, who walked two of the first three batters he faced. With first baseman Ryan Bottger on second and shortstop Kristian Trompiz on first, center fielder Bobby Boyd bounced a ball to the right side of the infield that was knocked down by first baseman Brett Doe. Boyd reached on an infield single, and Trompiz scored the go-ahead run ahead of Doe's throw to home plate. Quad Cities added an insurance run on a screaming line drive by Bregman, who missed his first home run by just a few feet, but did drive in Boyd with the double, his first extra-base hit and RBI as a professional.

Strong pitching by River Bandits reliever Ryan Thompson (2-2) delivered the game into extra innings. Thompson began his night in the eighth, sending down the first seven Kernels he faced in order. With one out in the 10th inning, designated hitter Jorge Fernandez singled to left to bring the tying run to the plate, but Thompson shut the door by striking out second baseman Rafael Valera and center fielder Tanner English to end the game and seal the win for the Bandits over their first-round playoff opponent, Cedar Rapids (1-2, 42-31).

Quad Cities tacked a single run on the board in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead against Kernels starter Keaton Steele. Nottingham started the scoring, singling to center in the third inning to score Trompiz for the All-Star catcher's team-high 46th RBI. Left fielder Jason Martin doubled the lead in the fourth inning by smacking his fourth home run of the season, a shot over the right field fence. The lead became three in the fifth, as Tanielu collected the first of his run-scoring hits, driving in Boyd on a line drive to center field.

The Kernels were kept quiet by Bandits starter Brock Dykxhoorn through five innings, as the Quad Cities righty allowed just one hit while walking one and striking out three. In the sixth, however, after he notched his fourth strikeout, Cedar Rapids tagged him for four straight hits, including an RBI single by shortstop Nick Gordon and game-tying two-run double from right fielder Edgar Corcino, chasing Dykxhoorn from the game. Reliever Aaron Greenwood gave up a run-scoring single - the Kernels' fifth straight hit - to catcher Alex Real to give the Kernels the lead. After a groundout for the second out, Greenwood got help from right fielder Sean McMullen, who fielded a single by left fielder Zack Larson and threw out Real at home plate to end the inning. Greenwood went 1 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout.

BANDITS RALLY LATE, TOP CEDAR RAPIDS IN 10

Quad Cities tags Kernels bullpen for runs in seventh, eighth, 10th to even playoff preview series

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 26, 2015) - A night after losing late to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, the Quad Cities River Bandits returned the favor, tying the game in the eighth inning on a two-run single by center fielder Bobby Boyd and pulling ahead on a 10th-inning sacrifice fly by shortstop Kristian Trompiz to defeat the Kernels, 4-3 in 10 innings Friday night.

Trailing 3-1 and batting with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth, Boyd lined a ball through the right side of the infield past first baseman Jorge Fernandez to score third baseman Nick Tanielu and left fielder Jason Martin to tie the game. In the first inning of extras, right fielder Ramon Laureano skipped a line-drive triple past sliding right fielder Max Murphy and then scored on the Trompiz sacrifice fly to left field against reliever Randy LeBlanc (5-1) to give the River Bandits the 4-3 lead.

Cedar Rapids (1-1 second half, 42-30 overall) scored two runs in the first inning against River Bandits right-hander Joshua James, as the first four men reached base safely. Center fielder Edgar Corcino and shortstop Nick Gordon each walked, followed by a single from Kernels left fielder Zack Larson. With the bases loaded and nobody out, designated hitter Alex Real singled in Corcino, moving Gordon to third and Larson to second. Murphy struck out for the first out of the inning, and third baseman T.J. White drove in the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice, beating out a play at first and scoring Gordon.

The River Bandits (1-1, 46-24) were stifled through three innings against starter Ethan Mildren, getting just two runners on base in that time, as first baseman Jamie Ritchie walked and singled his first two times to the plate. Quad Cities chased Mildren after six innings, recording back-to-back hits against the righty in the fourth and sixth innings despite not breaking through on the scoreboard. The River Bandits got their first run in the seventh, after Boyd tripled to start the inning and scored on a groundout by Ritchie.

After Quad Cities tied the game in the top of the eighth, Eric Peterson (4-3) was tasked with keeping the Kernels quiet and faced just one over the minimum in the eighth and ninth innings, striking out a pair in the process. In the bottom of the 10th, Angel Heredia had to get through some trouble to earn his second save. With one out, he hit second baseman Pat Kelly, and Corcino reached on a fielding error by Alex Hernandez on a line drive off his glove. Gordon then lined a 1-2 pitch into the left-center field alley way that Boyd caught on leap before a dive to prevent a potential game-tying hit. Heredia struck out Larson to end the ballgame and give the River Bandits the win and even the four-game series at one win apiece.
