Iowa State Fair Board Elections

DES MOINES, IA (12/17/2015)(readMedia)-- Two new members were elected to the Iowa State Fair Board of Directors and five were re-elected during the Iowa Association of Fairs Conference and Annual Meeting held December 11-13 in Des Moines. Delegates from six geographic State Fair Board districts elect two board members each for a total of 12 directors. All terms are staggered two-year terms.

Directors re-elected to serve two-year terms and their districts are: Bob Schlutz, Columbus Junction (southeast); C.W. Thomas, Guthrie Center (southwest); Randy Brown, Osceola (south central); Alan Brown, Hampton (north central); and, John Harms, Monticello (northeast).

Two new board members and their districts are: Darwin Gaudin, Primghar (northwest), elected to serve a 2 year term for former Board member, Bill Neubrand, who passed away this year. Tennie Carlson, Stratford (north central), elected for a 1 year term to complete the term of board member, James Romer, who moved out of state this year. Tennie joins a notable list of women who have served on the Iowa State Fair Board including most recently, Leona Ashman (south central) who served as president in the 90s and Jeannie Partlow (northwest) who served as treasurer and retired from the Board in 2010.

In 2016, Alan Brown will serve the Board as president, John Harms will serve as vice-president and Dave Hoffman will serve as treasurer.

Other Board members include : Paul Vaassen, Dubuque (northeast); Gary VanAernam, Exira (southwest); Jerry Parkin, Earlham (south central); and Gary McConnell, Bloomfield (southeast). Directors by office held are Governor Terry Branstad (represented by Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds), Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey (represented by Michael Naig), and Iowa State University President Dr. Steven Leath (represented by Dr. John Lawrence).

Milking Shorthorns Impress Judges at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (09/15/2015)(readMedia)-- Lazy M Farm of Stitzer, Wis. showed the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Females in the Milking Shorthorn Dairy Cattle show judged August 14 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

The Stitzer, Wis. farm also claimed the Champion Premier Exhibitor and Reserve Champion Premier Breeder honors.

Elron Farms of Lost Nation nabbed the Champion Premier Breeder and Reserve Champion Exhibitor honors.

The Premier Breeder Award is given to the competitor who earns the most points for animals bred and exhibited by the entrant or others during the day's show. The Premier Exhibitor Award is given to the exhibitor who accumulates the most points based upon the day's placings.

Everly Farm Sweeps Iowa State Fair Baby Doll Sheep Show

DES MOINES, IA (09/15/2015)(readMedia)-- Schoelermans Babydoll House of Everly took top honors in the Baby Doll Sheep show judged August 20 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. The farm was awarded the Champion and Reserve Champion Ram and Champion and Reserve Champion Ewe banners along with first place in the Premier Exhibitor contest.

Grammas Babydolls of Clark, S.D. took second place in the Premier Exhibitor contest and Michelle Harland of Nevada took third.

Iowans Win Top Honors in State Fair Shorthorn Cattle Show

DES MOINES, IA (09/15/2015)(readMedia)-- Rosemary Thompson of Gilman exhibited both the Grand Champion Bull and the Champion Iowa Bull in the Shorthorn Cattle Show judged August 22 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Braden Gabrielson of Belmond took home the Grand Champion Female and Champion Iowa Female Banners.

Landon Bolin of Dunlap exhibited the Reserve Champion Female and Mitchell Family Shorthorns of Waverly earned the Reserve Champion Bull banner.

Studer Shorthorns of Creston earned the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor awards.

Niehaus and Feldman Genetics Sweep Spotted Swine Show at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (09/04/2015)(readMedia)-- Niehaus and Feldman Genetics of Greene took top honors at the Spotted Swine Show at the 2015 Iowa State Fair by taking home the Grand Champion Boar and Champion Gilt banners along with Premier Exhibitor.

Both Reserve Gilt and Reserve Boar were presented to M&N Show Pigs of Center Point.

DES MOINES, IA (09/04/2015)(readMedia)-- Tyler and Jessie Frasher of Anamosa were awarded the Grand Champion banner for the second year in a row at the Hawkeye Market Swine show at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Keppy Farms of Durant was awarded Reserve Grand Champion Hawkeye Market Swine.

Wulf Brothers of Donahue took the Grand Champion Truckload banner while Hauser Livestock of Grinnell was awarded Reserve Grand Champion Truckload honors.

Top Honors Awarded at Iowa State Fair Yorkshire Show

DES MOINES, IA (09/04/2015)(readMedia)-- Kari Boyum of Wanamingo, Minn. won Grand Champion Boar honors at the Yorkshire Swine show judged Friday, August 21 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Ryan Morningstar of Tiffin received the Reserve Grand Champion Boar title.

Morganne & Melea Farmer of Trenton, Mo. exhibited the Grand Champion Gilt while Rowdy Campfield of Runnells exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Gilt.

Hauser Livestock of Grinnel was awarded the Premier Exhibitor title. The Premier Exhibitor award is presented to the exhibitor earning the highest point total in individual breeding classes for competition.

Animals are divided according to farrowing date based on the other animals entered in the competition.

West Union Farm Sweeps Iowa State Fair Oxford Down Sheep Show

DES MOINES, IA (09/04/2015)(readMedia)-- Double O Acres of West Union took top honors in the Oxford Down Sheep show judged August 23 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. The farm was awarded the Reserve Champion Ram, Champion Ewe and Reserve Champion Ewe banners. They also placed first in the Premier Exhibitor contest.

DES MOINES, IA (08/26/2015)(readMedia)-- T Bone Cattle of Osceola won Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Bull along with Iowa Champion Bull honors in the Salers Cattle show judged Friday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Iowa Farms Win Top Honors in Iowa State Fair Salers Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/24/2015)(readMedia)-- T Bone Cattle of Allerton won Grand Champion Bull and Iowa Champion Bull honors in the Salers Cattle show judged Friday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Travis Barnes of Lamoni was awarded Grand Champion Female honors. The Reserve Grand Champion Female banner was awarded to Jeremy Brink of Fremont. Brink also won Reserve Grand Champion Bull and Iowa Champion Female banners.

Despite a couple of rainy days, an estimated, unaudited 1,117,398 people visited the 2015 Iowa State Fair, besting the previous 2008 record of 1,109,150. The 2015 Iowa State Fair was held August 13-23. A breakdown of daily attendance is listed below:
