Over the last several weeks we have been bringing you many stories from the Olympics in London, highlighting the amazing feats of our Military Olympians. These amazing athletes serve in the Armed Forces, and on Team USA. With the Olympic games now coming to a close, we reflect back on our troops achievements on the battlefield and on the athletic field.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT OUR HEROES COMPETING ON THE
BATTLEFIELD IN AFGHANISTAN WHO SELDOM GET RECOGNITION

As we celebrate our Military Olympians, who can do such amazing things in their events, let us not forget the amazing things our troops overseas do every day in Afghanistan with little fanfare.

Our troops continue fighting the Taliban and Al-Qaeda despite the 110+ degree heat and diminishing media coverage about their efforts. They fight to make sure that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven and training ground for terrorist to plot attacks to kill American civilians - which is their aim!

Our fighting military will not receive media attention or acclaim for their heroic acts, but we will thank them with a care package of support from home.

SPC. DENNIS BROWSHER OF DALLAS, TX HOPING
FOR GOLD-MEDAL PERFORMANCE TOMORROW!

Keep reading every day from now through the end of the Olympics as we bring you the stories of our Military Olympians and their impressive achievements. Today we're looking at U.S. Army Specialist and native of Dallas, TX, Dennis Browsher, who will compete tomorrow in the Modern Pentathlon. The Modern Pentathlon event includes a myriad of disciplines including running, swimming, fencing, shooting and horse riding!

After watching swimming in the 1996 Olympic Summer Games, Dennis Bowsher knew he wanted to be a member of Team USA.

"It was then that I got the Olympic dream," Bowsher said. "It would be so cool to represent the United States."

A little over a decade later, that dream would become a reality, but for a different sport -- modern pentathlon.

The sport traces its roots to the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, and was introduced in 1912. Athletes competing are faced with five different obstacles. They must fence, swim 200-meters, ride a show jumping horse, and run 3 kilometers while stopping to shoot a pistol along the way --  all skills used in military combat.

"A soldier had to know how to ride a horse, use their gun," Bowsher said. "If they ran out of bullets, they had to be able to use their sword. If there was no horse, they had to be able to cross land or water."

As a soldier in the U.S. Army, it was the perfect fit. The Games of the XXX Olympiad have even more significance.."

"In 1912, General George Patton competed in the Olympics in modern pentathlon, so 100 years later, I'm a soldier in the Army competing in the modern Olympics just like General George Patton did," Bowsher said.

JAMIE GRAY, WIFE OF ARMY SSG. HANK GRAY WINS OLYMPIC GOLD
BEST SCORE IN HISTORY SHOOTING PRONE, STANDING & KNEELING

Keep reading every day from now through the end of the Olympics as we bring you the stories of our Military Olympians and their impressive achievements. Today we are extremeley proud to bring you the story of Army Wife Jamie Gray. In addition to winning gold and setting a new record for her near-perfect score in the last round, she also made 2012 the first year since World War II that the United States won 3 gold-medals in shooting events!

Jamie Gray, wife of U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit shooter Staff Sgt. Hank Gray, won an Olympic gold medal in the women's 50-meter rifle 3-positions event Aug. 4 at the Royal Artillery Barracks here.

U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program rifle coach Maj. Dave Johnson, who leads Team USA's rifle shooters in London, coached Gray to the victory.

Gray established Olympic records in the qualification (592) and final (691.9) portions of the event, which includes shooting from prone, standing and kneeling positions.

On the next-to-last shot of the final round, Gray recorded her worst score (8.9) of the day, but she closed with her best shot (10.8) of the finale to seal the victory with a flourish.

"It was almost a little bit of relief, honestly," said Gray, 28, of Phenix City, Ala. "I've dreaded that last shot for four years, and it's amazing to have it come through and be a good shot.

"It looked good and it felt good, so it was awesome," she added. "After shooting an 8.9 on the next-to-last shot, you want to come back from that one, and that's what I did."

Serbia's Ivana Maksimovic (687.5) claimed the silver medal, and Czech Republic's Adela Sykorova (683) took the bronze.

Gray said she realized she could secure the gold after shooting 198 in standing. She opened with a 198 in prone, and finished with a 196 kneeling.

"After I shot a 198 standing, I was like, 'OK, here we go. This is a good one,'" she said. "The kneeling was probably the hardest thing I've ever shot -- 20 shots kneeling -- and I got through it great. I can't ask for a better kneeling today. It was windy, and I had one bad shot that just got away from me in the wind.

"Other than that," Gray continued, "I took just great shots. Every shot was a good shot. After that, I knew that's a big one and I have a chance at this."r

In one bit of good news, our troops today killed a notorious terrorist leader and member of the dangerous Haqqani network!

NATO forces killed a local commander for the Haqqani insurgent group in an airstrike in eastern Afghanistan, the military alliance said Monday.

Sher Mohammad Hakimi was hit on Sunday in Logar province, the coalition said.

Hakimi was sitting under a tree with some associates when the NATO strike killed him, said Logar province police chief, Raeis Khan Rahimzai. He said four others were injured.

According to Rahimzai, Hakimi was known for organizing roadside bomb attacks and for training insurgents. NATO said Hakimi transported weapons through the region and served directly under Haqqani leader Muhammad Agha.

US ARMY SGT. VINCENT HANCOCK MAKES HISTORY:
FIRST-EVER TO WIN GOLD TWICE IN MEN'S SKEET EVENT

It may surprise some people, but there are actually many military veterans currently serving simultaneously in the US Army Marksmanship Unit and also on Team USA. Keep reading every day from now through the end of the Olympics as we bring you the stories of our Military Olympians and their impressive achievements both on and off the battlefield!

A fast-fingered 23-year-old Sgt. Vincent Hancock shattered multiple Olympic records while staking his claim for gold at the London Games on Tuesday even as other military athletes suffered through the agony of defeat.

The Fort Benning, Ga.-based Army Marksmanship Unit skeet shooter drilled 123 out of 125 targets in his record-setting qualifier and then a perfect 25 in the finals for another record and his spot at the top of the podium.

His score of 148 broke the Olympic skeet record of 145 he set en route to his first Olympic gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Hancock's win also marks the first time an Olympic skeet shooter has nailed back-to-back gold medals.

We're celebrating military athletes who serve their country on the battlefield and as part of TEAM USA at the Olympic games.

While these Military Olympians deserve our praise and all the media coverage the Olympics brings, we can't forget about the military heroes serving overseas.

Their feats on the battlefield often go unrecognized and are not covered by the media, but they are just as deserving of our praise and recognition as our Olympians.

We have over 90,000 troops still serving in Afghanistan and they need our support!

The following story comes to us from blogger Kevin Hanrahan who blogs about our troops and military dogs. It is a true story witnessed by his friend "Steve" in Afghanistan

The 1st Cavalry Division Chaplain went to the hospital here in Afghanistan tonight with one of the Deputy Commanding Generals to pin a Purple Heart on a Soldier that was wounded  this morning by an IED. The Chaplain was telling me that this young hero was severely injured, he was missing his left hand, one side of his face was completely torn apart, and his body was peppered with shrapnel.

Our General pinned the purple heart on the Soldier, then asked him if there was anything he could do for him before he was flown out of theater. The Soldier could not speak so he moved his one remaining hand signaling for a pen. He was handed a pen and paper, then wrote a note to our General.

The Chaplin was telling me he thought it was going to be a request to call his wife or pass a message back home that he was going to be OK, when he looked at the note he saw a list of supplies his Soldiers needed that were still out on the battlefield fighting. Our Chaplin told me that it was the first time he saw our General cry during a Purple Heart ceremony.

This HERO is the reason why I have left my family for five of the past 11 years. There is no higher honor then to stand with these men and women in combat.

This story not only speaks to the selfless nature of our troops but it also underscores a problem in Afghanistan that we're trying to combat - the lack of supplies.

We all know that Afghanistan is a tough place to get supplies in and out of, especially for the troops serving in the mountains or the remote areas on the border with Pakistan.

We're working hard to get our packages to the troops who need them the most - the ones that are on the front lines, not on a well-supplied base or air field.

LACEY CASTLEBERRY ONLY 25, DELIVERS MAF
CARE PACKAGES TO TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN!

One of our most special and important guests of this year's Troopathon was not a big-name celebrity who everyone has heard of, but someone who is just as important to our troops as anyone else on our guest list.

Her name is Lacey and even though she's just 25 years old, she has done some amazing things with MAF to help our troops in a direct way. Lacey is a civilian contractor and works out of air bases in Afghanistan and volunteers for Operation Care. She is one of the people that MAF and other pro-troop groups use to distribute our support packages to troops on the front lines. She joined us on Troopathon to tell her story.

"Most of our care packages that we get are from Move America Forward"...

"On the larger bases we have a little PX, a little store, to get deodorant and shampoo but a lot of these guys who need it are at the smaller bases. So we would get these care packages out on the helicopters and out to these smaller bases that only get supplies so often. So these are the guys who get rationed food, they may not get showers for days..."

"...just to see the smiles and the excitement and the joy on these guys' faces was pretty incredible!"

- Lacey Castleberry, interviewed on Troopathon 2012

Lacey is a huge help to MAF and an important component of our operation. She is our link to the troops on the front lines and part of what makes sponsoring a care package through Move America Forward as special and unique way to support the troops!

Please donate now and help us get MORE packages to Lacey so she can get them out into the hands of the troops who need them!

NEED $28,539 MORE TO GET
CARE PACKAGES TO AFGHANISTAN

GREAT NEWS! Thanks to a very generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous, we are able to raise our goal to get care packages to more of our troops in Afghanistan. We set a modest goal of $250,000 because contributions had been dropping as our economy stalls.

We're now in a position to get care packages to most of the troops that are in harm's way. To get that many care packages, we raised our goal to $400,000 and are now only $28,539 short of hitting that mark. Can you help push us over the top so our military men and women will know they are not forgotten?

Combined with all the other money that has come in overnight, we're now at a total of $371,461 raised for the Troopathon. That means we've achieved our initial goal, thanks to the generosity of many awesome patriots like yourself!

HUGE THANKS to everyone who has donated thus far! Now let's see if we can accomplish something really spectacular this year and see if we can raise up to $400,000 to make sure that none of our troops overseas are forgotten!

We've worked so hard to get where we are now, but if we just keep going a little longer, I know we can raise another $28,539! It would be an amazing morale boost to our troops if they could receive $400,000 in support this summer.

Don't our troops deserve it?
