Davenport, Iowa (February 12, 2014) - A floor-to-ceiling curtain of sculpted and fused clear glass will be on display at the Figge Art Museum beginning Saturday. Landscape: Ingalena Klenell and Beth Lipman is on loan to the Figge from the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington and will be on view in the second floor print gallery.

The exhibition is a collaboration between artists Ingalena Klenell of Sweden and Beth Lipman of Wisconsin in which pieces of glass are suspended from the ceiling and rise up from the floor to create a translucent landscape curtain. Their use of transparent glass emphasizes the romanticism inherent in 19th century landscapes, as well as the fragility of nature as we understand it today.

Showcasing cutting edge technology, Landscape is unique in the world of glass. "We are thrilled to have this extraordinary exhibition at the Figge and are eager for people to see it in person to fully appreciate all the intricate details and remarkable talent on display," said Executive Director Tim Schiffer.

Both artists will be in the Quad Cities on February 20 and visitors are invited to the museum for a FREE Gallery Talk at 7 p.m. to hear first-hand the techniques used to create Landscape.

Sponsored locally by Andy & Debi Butler, Cottingham & Butler and SISCO, the exhibition will be on display through May 25, 2014.

MVQG: ENCORE

Davenport, Iowa (January 29, 2014) - For the second year in a row, the Mississippi Valley Quilters Guild (MVQG) is partnering with the Figge Art Museum for an exhibition of quilts that will be on display in the lobby. MVQG: Encore will begin Tuesday, February 4 and run through Sunday, February 9.

The exhibition features a selection of quilts by MVQG members and showcases the talent and remarkable skills of these area quilters. Last year's show was held in conjunction with Quilts: Masterworks from the American Folk Art Museum. This year it will be the only quilt-themed exhibition on view.

"It's a win, win," according to Director of Education Melissa Mohr. "The Figge experienced an increase in attendance during last year's MVQG show, which demonstrates how much this community supports quilting as an art form, and we're glad we can continue to celebrate area talent in this way. Doing this exhibition every year in the Lobby is a good way for us to stay connected with the quilting community, especially during years when we don't have a large quilt exhibition on display."

In conjunction with MVQG: Encore, the Figge will conduct a "People's Choice" competition, in which visitors are welcome to vote for their favorite quilt. Voting will occur onsite until 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 6. The winner will be announced that evening before an Art-Quilting Talk scheduled for 7 p.m. A quilt raffle will also be taking place throughout the week and quilt appraisals will be available by appointment only from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday, February 6.

The exhibition is free with paid admission or membership and free after 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 6.

Katja Loher: Videoplanet-Orchestra

Davenport, Iowa (January 21, 2014) - Beginning Saturday, New York-based Swiss video artist Katja Loher will create a multi-sensory environment in the third floor gallery of the Figge Art Museum for the exhibition Katja Loher: Videoplanet-Orchestra.

This site-specific "inter-planetary" installation will feature kaleidoscopic video works projected onto floating spheres and from within glass spheres. Elements from new and existing works will be incorporated and will all come together for the first time.

Visitors of Katja Loher: Videoplanet-Orchestra will enter the darkened third floor gallery space into a magical universe of floating spheres of varying sizes, whose rounded forms serve as sites for video projections. Museum patrons will have the chance to peer into a series of mini or micro-worlds in which costumed dancers form letters that compose words and sentences to pose simple, thought-provoking questions.

Loher's dramatic installation creates dreamlike, immersive environments for the visitor that question the balance between humans, nature and technology. Each tiny "universe" in the exhibition provides an elaborate commentary on big issues.

The exhibition is presented through a generous grant from the Riverboat Development Authority and through a multi-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Eastern Iowa Community College District and will be on view through May 4, 2014.

Davenport, Iowa (January 15, 2014) - Kids Design Glass, sponsored locally by U.S. Bank, will open at the Figge Art Museum on Saturday. This traveling exhibition of 52 colorful glass sculptures, along with the original drawings that inspired them, originated as an educational program where master glass artists from the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington selected drawings of mythical monsters by local school children and turned them into glass sculptures.

The exhibition explores the creative process, from pure imagination to advanced technical skills. As Benjamin W. Cobb, one of the lead artists on the project, wrote in the exhibition catalog, "For the kids, it is several minutes of creativity and fun in the studio. For the glassblowers, the program means several hours of sweating it out in the Hot Shop, staying true to a design with unrealistic dimensions, unforgiving irregularities, and strange color combinations...we, the glassblowers, have to let go of everything we have learned about symmetry, form, color and perfection and embrace an artistry that colors outside the lines."

To personalize the experience of presenting Kids Design Glass at the Figge, a drawing by a young artist (12 and under) from the Quad Cities will be selected by the Hot Shop artists from the Museum of Glass. The lucky child's artwork will be translated into a glass sculpture. This process will be streamed live from the Hot Shop in Tacoma, Washington from 2-7 p.m. on March 30 in the Figge Art Museum auditorium. The contest will run from February 1 - February 22. Visit www.figgeartmuseum.org for an entry form.

Kids Design Glass will be on view through May 4, 2014.

Davenport, Iowa (December 18, 2013) - The Virgin Mary in Art will be on view at the Figge Art Museum starting Saturday in the second floor gallery.

The exhibition will feature a dozen paintings from the Figge's permanent collection, including images that focus on Mary's relationship with the infant Jesus. Visitors will view scenes of Mary nursing the Christ Child, gazing at him in loving contemplation or playing with him. The works celebrate the endless love and compassion of the Virgin for her son and, by extension, for all of humanity.

The primary function of these paintings was to convey fundamental beliefs of the Christian faith and inspire meditation and prayer. The artists of the paintings employed a variety of symbolic motifs and other visual strategies to communicate Mary's unique position within the church.

The exhibition will be on view through February 17, 2014.

Davenport, Iowa (October 16, 2013) - Walter Haskell Hinton: Image Maker for Deere is an exhibition of Walter Haskell Hinton works from the Deere & Company collection. The exhibition will be on display at the Figge Art Museum beginning Saturday in the second floor print gallery.

At a time when tractors replaced teams of horses, Hinton was hired by John Deere in 1934 to humanize the tractor by making it seem like a part of the family. His work helped make the John Deere Model D, produced from 1925 to 1953, an icon of American manufacturing.

The exhibition includes the iconic Boy Driving Tractor painting as well as lesser-known works and examples of printed materials using Hinton's images, including his 12-panel biography of John Deere. Originally created as a calendar, the painted biography portrays Deere's invention and production of the modern plow as a key element in the taming of the American West and the fulfillment of the country's "Manifest Destiny."

In his work for Deere, Hinton demonstrated tremendous creativity in presenting the product?a John Deere tractor?in a way that made it emotionally appealing. Hinton's work is the forerunner of today's advertising industry, which uses sophisticated psychology and visual technology to sell products 24 hours a day.

Hinton provides a unique window into the 1930s. With their obvious idealization of farm life, his pictures look beyond the Depression to an era when daily life would be transformed by technology and industry. The exhibition is sponsored by John Deere and will be on view through February 2, 2014.
