Iowa Obama Campaign Launches "It Takes One to Get to Six" with Day of Action, Kicking off 60 Day Countdown to Early Voting

Obama Campaign Holding Over 170 Events Statewide; Over 4,200 Nationwide

 

DES MOINES - Tomorrow and Sunday, Obama Campaign volunteers in Iowa will participate in an "It Takes One to Get to Six" day of action as part of the "It Takes One" nationwide initiative. The Day of Action begins the 60 day countdown to early vote and the 100 day countdown to Election Day. The campaign is holding canvass kick-off media events in 11 Iowa cities and over 170 events statewide.

 

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the "It Takes One" initiative with a video. Watch at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbWk_PYg600. Iowans can find their local canvass at www.barackobama.com/one and follow the canvassing action on Twitter by using the hashtags #ItTakesOne and #60DaysOut.

 

"That one conversation you have, that one new volunteer you recruit, that could be the difference between waking up on November 7th and feeling the promise of four more years or asking yourself, could I have done more?," said First Lady Michelle Obama.

 

This election is a clear choice between President Obama's vision to create jobs, reclaim security for the middle class and restore the basic values that make our country great, and Mitt Romney, who wants to continue tax giveaways to millionaires and billionaires and return us to the failed policies of the past, including letting Wall Street write its own rules.

 

From Council Bluffs to Davenport, volunteers are talking to their neighbors about President Obama's vision for an economy built to last, because they know how much is at stake.

 

"Every single person can make a difference in this election - and this week we're asking supporters to start by taking one action that will help grow our campaign," said Iowa State Director Brad Anderson. "The idea is that if we all commit to doing at least one thing to organize our communities, the combined impact will ensure that this President can keep moving this country forward for another four years."

Congressman Bruce Braley Holding Conference Call to Announce Veterans & Military Families for Obama

DES MOINES - Tomorrow, Congressman Bruce Braley will host a conference call to announce the Veterans & Military Families for Obama Steering Committee.  Two members of the Committee Marc Wallace from Des Moines and Sarah Petersen from Sioux City will join Rep. Braley on the call.

The President knows that sacred trust with those who serve and protect our nation. It's a commitment that begins at enlistment, and it must never end -- we owe our veterans and their families the care they were promised and the benefits they have earned.

The Steering Committee will engage fellow veterans across the state about the importance of this next election. They will help lay out the choice between President Obama and Mitt Romney's plans and what they really mean for veterans and their families.

Organizing for America Iowa Opens Office in Muscatine

DES MOINES - Organizing for America Iowa has opened an office in Muscatine County with Rep. Dave Loebsack. The Muscatine office is the 10th campaign office in Iowa. It follows the opening of the Mason City office, which took place last Wednesday.

The Obama campaign has been on the ground building a network of volunteers and reaching out to friends and neighbors in local communities about the progress President Obama has made to strengthen the economy for the long term and provide economic security to middle class families, while the Romney campaign's strategy is to bombard the airwaves with ads funded by billionaire-backed superPACs.

This election offers Iowans two drastically different campaign approaches and two fundamentally different visions of how to grow the economy, create middle-class jobs, and pay down the debt.  Governor Romney believes that if you take away regulations and cut taxes by trillions of dollars, the market will solve all our problems on its own.  While the President believes the economy grows not from the top down, but from the middle class up, and he has an economic plan to do that -- a plan that focuses on education, energy, innovation, infrastructure, and a tax code that creates American jobs and pays down our debt in a way that's balanced.

20,000 YOUNG ADULTS IN IOWA BENEFITTING FROM OBAMACARE

Department of Health and Human Services today releases new data; nationwide 3.1 million have benefitted

DES MOINES --- Today, the Department of Health and Human Services published new data that shows 20,000 young adults in Iowa who would otherwise be uninsured remained covered on their family's plan, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Nationwide, approximately 3.1 million young people have benefitted from the law, passed in March, 2010, which allows young adults under 26 to stay on their parents' health insurance plan.

Before Obamacare, adult children would usually be kicked off the family plan when they turned 18 or graduated from school, but young adults often have entry level jobs that don't provide health insurance.  As a result, young people were the age group most likely to be uninsured.  Under the health care law, that's changing.  Obamacare requires insurance companies to allow young people to stay on their family health insurance until they turn 26, which has provided a critical bridge for millions of young people across the country.

Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack to Hold Conference Call to Announce Rural Iowans for Obama Steering Committee

DES MOINES - Today, former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack will host a conference call to announce the Rural Iowans for Obama Steering Committee.  Two members of the Rural Steering Committee, Bruce Rohwer, a corn farmer from Northwest Iowa and member of the Iowa Corn Growers Association and Cathy Lafrenz a small business owner, who runs Miss Effie's Country Flowers from rural Scott County, will join former Iowa Governor Vilsack on the call.

The call will focus on the work the Obama administration has done to support rural Iowans and grow new economic opportunities for small towns, farmers, and Iowans across the state. Since day one, President Obama has worked to build stronger and more diverse economies in rural Iowa through investments in renewable energy, manufacturing, education and agriculture.

The Rural Iowans for Obama Steering Committee Members will play a key role in organizing their communities, talking to friends and neighbors about President Obama's record to build an economy that is built to last and Mitt Romney's lack of experience in dealing with rural issues and agriculture. Rural Iowans and Iowans all across the state launched President Obama's campaign in 2008 and will be critical to this next election.

Statement from Former Lt. Governor Patty Judge on the Paycheck Fairness Act

DES MOINES - Today, the Senate voted down the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would have closed loopholes that prevent women from fighting for equal pay and help stop pay discrimination before it starts. Former Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge and Iowa Women for Obama Steering Committee member released the following statement after the vote:

"We are disappointed that the Paycheck Fairness Act did not pass the Senate floor.  It would have helped ensure that all women receive equal pay for equal work.  The Act would have built on efforts by President Obama to protect and advance policies that promote fairness, equal opportunity and a level playing field for all Americans, like the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

"The result of this vote could have been different if Mitt Romney had showed leadership and stood up for women and stood up to Republicans in Washington who deny millions of women a fair shot at what we've earned.  To this day, Mitt Romney has refused to support for the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Lilly Ledbetter Act.  Iowans were watching to see if Romney would come out on the side of women and equal rights, but instead we saw yet another example of his failed leadership on women's issues."

"Congress needs to remember that denying equal pay for equal work doesn't just discriminate against women - it also jeopardizes the economic security of families across the country."

DES MOINES - Tomorrow, Attorney General Tom Miller and Rob Dolan, the Mayor of Melrose, MA will hold a media conference call to discuss Mitt Romney's economic philosophy, his failed economic record in Massachusetts and why he's the wrong choice for Iowans.  Mayor Dolan, first elected in 2001, served with Mitt Romney in Massachusetts and before that he was an Alderman-at-Large.

Mitt Romney claims his experience as a corporate buyout specialist will bring positive economic results for the nation. He made the same economic promises when he ran for governor of Massachusetts that he makes today -- more jobs, less debt and smaller government. Once in office, he broke all those promises and more - Massachusetts plummeted to 47th out of 50 in job creation, manufacturing jobs fell at twice the national average, taxes and fees were raised by $750 million a year, and Romney left Massachusetts taxpayers with more debt per person than in any other state.  Now we are seeing the same promises out of Mitt Romney on the presidential campaign trail and America can't afford the same results.

Graduating Students Need to Pay Attention to Health Insurance Rules

Students have 30 days once health plans end to notify their parents' health insurance company to continue coverage; delay could cause long lapse

DES MOINES – Few students realize that once their health plans ends after graduation they have 30 days to notify their parents' health insurance company to continue coverage. If students miss the 30-day window, it could be months before they're able to join their parents' plan under open enrollment. To help educate students of the rules, Obama for America today released the attached fact sheet detailing the action graduating college students can take to keep health care coverage once they are out of school.  Under the Affordable Care Act, signed into law by President Obama in March 2010, students can stay on their parents' plans until they turn 26 - and 2.5 million young adults who would otherwise be uninsured have coverage today because of Obamacare. 

Before health care reform, more young Americans lacked health coverage than any other age group - accounting for more than one in five of the uninsured.  As young people transition to the job market, they often have entry level jobs, part time jobs, or jobs at small businesses - all forms of employment that are less likely to offer insurance.  That is why it is imperative to let students know how to switch from their student health plan to their parents' plan after graduation.  Once student health plans end, they will have only 30 days to notify their parents' health insurance company.  If students miss the 30-day window, it could be months before they're able to join their parents' plan under open enrollment.

Dr. Jill Biden to Host Conference Call with OFA Iowa Volunteers; Announce Women for Obama Steering Committee

DES MOINES - Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady and wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will hold her first campaign event with Iowans.

Dr. Biden will host a conference call with supporters and announce the Women for Obama Steering Committee.  Volunteers will gather at house parties and campaign offices across the state to join the call and hear her thoughts about the critical role that women will play in this next election.

University of Iowa to Host Greater Together Student Summit TODAY
