INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, July 1, 2015/National FFA Organization) - As part of an executive order by President Barack Obama, career and technical education students will now be able to be designated as U.S. Presidential Scholars.

Established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, the Presidential Scholars Program has honored almost 7,000 of America's top-performing students. The program was expanded in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, literary and performing arts. Each year, the program recognizes two high school seniors from each state and 15 scholars at-large on the basis of excellence in scholarship. An additional 20 scholars are selected for exceptional talent in the arts.

The Presidential Scholars program is overseen by the Commission on Presidential Scholars and administered by staff at the U.S. Department of Education. This commission, appointed by President Obama, selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

"We are extremely honored by this decision," National FFA Advisor Dr. Steve Brown said. "This action elevates the value and importance of career and technical education where agricultural education plays a key role."

Next year, the White House will welcome the inaugural class of 20 CTE Presidential Scholars, who will be selected by the Commission on Presidential Scholars based on outstanding scholarship and demonstrated ability in career and technical education.

On Tuesday, June 30, First Lady Michelle Obama recognized outstanding students, teachers and administrators who have shown exceptional leadership in driving innovation in the field of career and technical education. Representing FFA were CTE Innovators Catherine Cincotta, a former student from North Burlington High School, N.J.; Whitney Bowman, currently a student at Virginia Tech; and FFA advisor and CTE Innovator Tyler Pope of Buckeye Central High School in New Washington, Ohio. In addition, FFA was represented by Tony Rice, former Pennsylvania state FFA officer, and Lauren Fillebrown, former state officer for New Jersey. Nan Hamilton, who is Cincotta's FFA advisor, also participated and provided exhibits for the event.

Every four years, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) puts on a series of campaign commercials disguised as presidential and vice-presidential debates.

The CPD is, in theory, a not-for-profit organization "established in 1987 to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners."

But the CPD is really just a scam the Republican and Democratic parties use to funnel illegally large "in kind" campaign donations, in the form of tens of millions of dollars' worth of free media exposure, exclusively to their own candidates.

A real nonpartisan, not-for-profit debate organization would use objective criteria for deciding which candidates may participate in debates. The CPD continuously refines its criteria with an eye toward ensuring that no third party or independent candidates qualifies for a microphone at a CPD "debate."

Disaster declaration requested for Buena Vista, Sioux, Webster and Wright counties; additional counties may be added as additional losses are identified

(DES MOINES) - Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad today requested a major disaster event declaration from United States President Barack Obama in response to the avian flu outbreak in Iowa. Over 33 million birds in Iowa have been affected by the deadly virus. The request is being made for Buena Vista, Sioux, Webster and Wright counties, but additional counties may be added to the request as additional losses are identified.

Branstad is requesting the following:

1.        Unemployment Assistance, Crisis Counseling, Disaster Case Management, and Disaster Legal Services, as well as any other Stafford Act programs appropriate for those who have lost employment and income as a result of the HPAI outbreak for Buena Vista, Sioux, Webster and Wright counties.

2.       Allow the Federal Highway Administration to issue a tonnage waiver on the state's federal aid roadways, such as Interstates 29 and 35. This waiver would accelerate the disposal process and reduce the likelihood of spreading HPAI while transporting poultry to disposal sites.

"With a disaster of this magnitude adversely affecting Iowa farmers, producers and the workers they employ, I am requesting federal assistance from President Obama and the Federal Emergency Management Agency," said Branstad. "Unemployment assistance from the federal government, in addition to efforts already occurring inside our state, will help displaced workers. In addition, issuing a tonnage waiver will allow for efficient disposal and cleanup of affected sites. Given the unprecedented nature of this disaster, it is my hope that the President will expedite this request to provide federal assistance as soon as possible.

Bettendorf - The Quad Cities hosts the 200 attendees of the Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars State Convention on June 4-7, 2015, at the Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf.

As part of the State Convention, Senator Lindsey Graham and U.S. Congressman Dave Loebsack will speak to attendees on Saturday at 9 a.m.  At the opening session on Friday at 8 a.m., Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher will welcome the group.

The last time the Quad Cities hosted the Iowa VFW State Convention was in 1991 and 1992.  The location is determined by the home of the State Commander.  Christian Popp is from the Davenport area and is a member of the VFW Post 9128 in Bettendorf, Iowa.  In 2012, the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (QCCVB) met with the Iowa VFW Office and learned that Christian Popp was going to be State Commander in 2014-2015.  They urged us to begin working on a location to host the state convention and the QCCVB has worked closely with Christian Popp & Penny Hurt (Ladies Auxiliary Incoming President) to plan many aspects of this convention.

The QCCVB estimates the local economic impact is over $80,000.

DES MOINES, IA (05/05/2015)(readMedia)-- The ISEA is disappointed in the lack of creativity and disregard for students exhibited by members of the Des Moines School Board in their proposed solution to the shortage of substitute teachers in the Des Moines Public School District (DMPS). Outsourcing the substitutes in an effort to meet a "fill" rate ignores the most important aspect of what the school board is elected to do: Take care of students first.

Proposing a substitute pipeline through Kelly Services, a temp agency whose contract was recently terminated in the Clear Lake School District for not meeting its financial savings goals will cost DMPS more than $850,000. This money would be better spent developing a high-quality, in-house, permanent substitute teacher pool utilizing professionals who are familiar with local students, schools, classrooms and teachers.

Utilizing our professional retirees and recent graduates, who were not hired in their first year out of teacher prep school, is a good place to start in developing an in-house, permanent substitute pool. A permanent pool allows for classroom and student familiarity, professional development opportunities and continuity for students. Teachers know which subs work well in their classrooms. Having an outsourced string of temps who are unfamiliar with local schools coming in and out of classrooms doesn't benefit our students. The Des Moines Public School Board simply must look at the big picture, not just a fill rate.
