There is a lot of talk lately about whether passengers on a plane should be able to make phone calls while in flight. I want to know, based on your experiences, how far you think this ban should extend. Should phones be allowed for just texting and emailing, or are you OK with calls being made? I want to hear from you.

CLICK HERE and let me know how far the ban should go!

Should it be kept like it is where you can use your phone to listen to music, or play a game? Should it be opened up to be able to send texts and emails? Or, should phone calls be allowed? The Federal Communication Commission is going to make a decision soon. What do you think?

Tell me your opinion by clicking here!

Thanks as always for your response. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Sincerely,

Dear Friend,

Today we pause to honor the service of generations of veterans and reflect on the sacrifices they and their families have made for our great country.

As a military parent, I strongly believe that we have a moral responsibility to serve those who have worn our country's uniform and their families with the same dedication and honor with which they have served our nation. That is why we must end the backlog that forces veterans to wait years for their benefits; ensure that no one who has served our country in uniform has to fight for a job here at home; provide our troops with the training, support, and care they need and deserve; and support our military families.

I stand ready to assist any Iowa service member, veteran, or military family in any way I can. If you or a family member, friend, or neighbor need any assistance, I urge you to email or call me at 1.866.914.IOWA.

Not just this weekend, but every day, let us honor and support those who wear our nation's uniform; care for those who have served; and live up to the sacrifices generations of veterans have made and that our service members continue to make today.

To our men and women in uniform and to our veterans - thank you for your service to our great nation.

Sincerely,

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today called on the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, to cancel the upcoming recess and keep the House in session to deal with many important issues that Iowans are demanding action on. Everything from the Farm Bill and the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA), to a bipartisan budget and a commonsense agreement to create jobs and grow the economy, have yet to be dealt with. After the House recesses today for a 12 day district work period, it is only scheduled to be in session and voting for 16 days through the end of the year.

"On the heels of irresponsible and reckless manufactured crises that took our economy to the brink and slowed economic growth, news reports indicate that instead of redoubling efforts to rebuild the economy and boost job creation, the House Majority is considering reducing the already paltry number of work days scheduled in the House for the rest of the year.  Such a proposal is simply unacceptable," Loebsack wrote to Speaker Boehner. "I call you on to keep the House in session and working every day to get the work of the American people done.  I stand ready to continue to work on a bipartisan basis to move these critically important initiatives forward.

A copy of the letter can be found here.

Dear Friend,

As you have probably heard, due to the reckless brinksmanship in Washington, the federal government has needlessly been shut down.

During this shutdown, my number one priority as your Representative is making sure your needs continue to be met. Just because it remains closed, does not mean that problems with federal agencies don't arise. My offices are open and ready to help any Iowan.

CLICK HERE IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE DURING THE SHUTDOWN.

I will continue to work to help mitigate the impact that any dysfunction in Washington may have on you. I taped a short video to tell you about the various ways to get in touch with my office.

Please do not hesitate to be in touch.

Dear Friend,

Tomorrow we will come together to commemorate the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. We will always remember the families of all those we lost, the first responders who rushed to the scene, the volunteers who cleared rubble or lined up to donate blood, and our men and women in uniform who have made incredible sacrifices in defense of our nation.

I will also always remember the remarkable call to service I witnessed in Iowa communities and communities across the nation in the aftermath of the attacks. We came together with a shared sense of unity, engagement, and purpose. We had been attacked, but our country's enduring values and spirit were not shaken.

In honoring our first responders, our servicemembers, and those we lost in the attacks, we must remember the unity of our nation in the aftermath of the attacks which reminded us all that we had a part to play in moving our nation forward. In keeping with the designation of September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, I want to encourage all Iowans to join me in observing the twelfth anniversary of September 11th by participating in a service event. To find volunteer opportunities in your area, visit www.serve.gov and simply enter your zip code.

Giving back to your community is a way to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. I am proud to represent a district where neighbors pitch in to help one another, and I hope that tradition continues as we remember September 11th and beyond.

Sincerely,

Dear Friend,

Over the weekend, the President asked Congress to vote to authorize taking military action in Syria in response to their government using chemical weapons against their own people. While I believe the use of chemical weapons against civilians is morally reprehensible and should be unequivocally condemned by the international community, we must exercise extreme caution in undertaking military action. I want to hear from you.

POLL: Click here to share your thoughts.

What do you think Congress and the President should do? I strongly believe the President must make the case to the American people for military action, and it's critical to me that I know where you stand.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. Take a short poll now.

Your input is very important. I have been briefed by the White House but, like you, I still have many questions that must be answered before Congress votes on committing our military resources in the region. Hearing your thoughts is an important part of my deliberations.

Sincerely,

Dear Friend,

This spring, Iowa again saw rising rivers and streams across the State due to record levels of rainfall. As Iowans, the threat of flooding never seems far away, and it's only getting worse. Each time waters begin to rise, thoughts of 2008 and the devastation that families and communities suffered quickly returns. This year the rising waters once again sent communities scrambling to prepare for the worst and thousands of acres of farmland sat underwater, unable to be planted. The rising waters also sent another check from the federal government to help cover the necessary disaster costs of preparing and recovery. We can do better.

In Iowa, folks like those at the Iowa Flood Center and the University of Iowa are doing work that is helping Iowa communities prepare better and smarter for flooding. This success is already at work saving our communities money, time, and resources. The entire country should follow Iowa's lead in planning better and smarter for flooding in order to help families and communities, and achieve significant, long-term savings to the federal government. This is why last week I introduced the National Flood Research and Education Center Act (NFERC). This bill would create a National Flood Center to study ways to better predict and prevent flooding, and provide valuable information to the public.

Flooding is costing taxpayers billions of dollars a year for preparation and recovery. The prediction and prevention tools from a National Flood Center would help prevent damage and allow our communities to better allocate resources such as sand bags, machinery, volunteers, and temporary flood walls. Every year flooding costs taxpayers, and the new technologies and methods already being put to use in Iowa could save our country untold millions.

As Iowans, we have experienced the devastation that flooding can bring. I believe through a National Flood Center we can help prevent similar devastation across the country and in Iowa. We don't need to wait for the next devastation to act. No time is better than now to get a National Flood Center into action to save lives and resources, and achieve significant long-term savings. I look forward to chatting more about my bill with you in Iowa soon.

Sincerely,

Today, Congressional leaders once again put a Closed for Business sign on the Capitol and sent Congress home for five weeks. Not that I won't enjoy being in Iowa, working and meeting with folks just as I do every weekend, but there is so much left to do, Congress should stay in Washington and get to work. One of the major issues Congress has failed to address is passing a commonsense, long-term farm bill that can be signed into law. I've been fighting for months to get the bill done. Last week, I brought a leader of the Agriculture Committee to Iowa to meet with Iowa farmers. They told us just how important it is to rural communities that a comprehensive farm bill is passed.
Take a look at this short "From Dave's Desk" video

Passing a farm bill is just one of the many issues that have not been addressed. Time and again, Congress has taken a pass on actually getting something done. For example, Congressional leadership has refused to come to the table to find a way to replace the thoughtless, across the board cuts known as sequestration. They also have yet to pass a budget this year.

I'm calling on Congress to stay in Washington and work to find a solution to these and other issues.

Please take a look at the latest "From Dave's Desk" video.

All the best,

Dave Loebsack

According to the Small Business Administration, 97 percent of Iowa's employers are small businesses.  These businesses are the backbone of our economy and are essential to growing our economy and creating jobs.

I'm back home in Iowa working every weekend and one of my favorite things to do is visit small businesses.  I am constantly impressed with the innovation and dedication of employers and employees alike.  You can see photos of some of the businesses I have visited here.

To honor small businesses this week, I joined a bipartisan group to introduce a Resolution supporting "National Small Business Week."  This week is all about supporting local businesses and recognizing the contributions small businesses make to our communities and our economy.  I hope all Iowans will join me in making this week a celebration of Iowa's small businesses.

As a founding member of the bipartisan Small Business Caucus, I have made championing small businesses a top priority.  This includes supporting numerous initiatives to help small businesses including joining the other side of the aisle in supporting a 20 percent small business tax cut and increased tax deductions for capital expenses.  It is critical that small business in Iowa continue to grow and prosper and I will continue to fight to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed.

Sincerely,

This week, I had the privilege to welcome members of the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to our nation's capital.  Honor Flights bring World War II and Korean War Veterans to Washington to visit the Memorials that were built in their honor.  Take a minute to watch a quick video I made after their visit.

As you can see from the video, it was a beautiful day for the vets to come to Washington and be honored for their service.  Welcoming these servicemembers is one of my favorite things to do.  As a token of my appreciation, I presented them each with a copy of the official Congressional Record statement that I made to recognize this trip and their service.  I also gave each of them a copy of the Constitution.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have worked to improve care and benefits for our servicemembers and veterans, including expanding Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits for the National Guard; expanding access to mental health care; helping our veterans find civilian jobs; and opening new Community Based Outpatient Clinics to improve access to VA services for Iowa veterans.  I also recently co-introduced bipartisan legislation to eliminate the waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for servicemembers wounded in combat.

We cannot thank our servicemembers and veterans enough for their service to our nation.  Honor Flights are an incredible statement of support for our World War II and Korean War Veterans, and I was honored and humbled to join our Iowa Veterans at the World War II Memorial.

Sincerely,
