October 1, 2014 (Davenport, IA) - On Monday, October 6 at the general membership meeting,
The Rotary Club of Davenport Charitable Giving Committee in partnership with the Davenport
Rotary Board of Directors will award over $16,000 to fund projects and support organizations in
the community and abroad that provide basic human services, serve youth, and meet community
needs. Proceeds generated from the 2nd Annual Rotary Club of Davenport WingFest presented
by M.A. Ford this past June, funded the awards. The following organizations were recommended
by the Charitable Giving Committee and approved by the Board of Directors to receive funding:


Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley
Project Title: Triple Play-Team Sports Program
Project Description: Using a nationally proven curriculum, BGCMV will expand their physical
fitness programs for some of the most at-risk youth in the Quad Cities.
Amount Funded: $2,500


Friendly House
Project Title: Childcare Kitchen Update
Project Description: Purchasing a new freezer will provide the opportunity to increase the
quality and delivery of food they offer to their youth program participants
Amount Funded: $2,500


Vera French Community Mental Health Center
Project Title: Hot Meals for Chronically Mentally Ill Persons
Project Description: Hot meals are made and served to adults with chronic mental illness living
in Scott County that attend the Vera French Carol Center.
Amount Funded: $2,000


Camp Shalom
Project Title: Purchase of Mini Van
Project Description: Camp Shalom is in need of a mini van to carry small groups of campers
and staff.
Amount Funded: $1,000

Salvation Army
Project Title: Homeless Shelter Community Bathroom Hand-Dryers
Project Description: Purchase and installation of three electric hand dryers for the Family
Service Center Homeless Shelter's community meal site and community handicap accessible
bathrooms.
Amount Funded: $1,000


Special Olympics Scott County
Project Title: Uniforms and Equipment for SC Special Olympics Athletes
Project Description: Project will provide team and/or sport specific uniform shirts for Special
Olympics competitions and sports equipment for Special Olympics practice sessions.
Amount Funded: $1,000


Additionally, funds will be used to support Youth Harvest, a partnership between the Rotary Club
of Davenport and the North Scott Rotary that brings together over 200 underprivileged youth to
attend a fall harvest event at Pride of the Wapsi ($1,500). A speaker honorarium donated to
Community Healthcare, Inc. for their Vaccines for Children Program ($1,000), Fire and Medical
Supply Company/H.E.F. ($500), Miles of Smiles Team ($500), Rotary International Grant
($2,500) and the MAC High School Awards ($175).

The Davenport Rotary Club's Second Annual WingFest will be held June 21, from 3 pm - 7 pm, at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. "This is a celebration of the popular chicken wing appetizers, or Buffalo wings," according to club president Gary Loss, "and the proceeds will be distributed to local charities through our club's annual granting process."
Six area vendors will compete for the recognition of "Best Quad City Wings" at the event. The vendors will be Happy Joe's/Grille 350, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chef James Preszlar Catering, JJ's Big Fish and More, Thunder Bay Bar & Grille, and Rivals Sports Bar & Grill.
Admission to the event includes two wings from each of the vendors (additional wings can be purchased), live entertainment, and a bounce house for the kids. Beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

Tickets are $25 at the gate. No charge for children 12 and under. All proceeds go into the club's charitable giving fund.

On Monday, April 28, The Rotary Club of Davenport will award $56,000 in college scholarships (one $16,000 scholarship and four $10,000 scholarships) to five Davenport High School Students.  Students from Davenport Assumption, Central, North and West were eligible to apply.
The Rotary Club of Davenport Scholarship Program is one of the largest in the Quad Cities metro area providing four $10,000 and one $16,000 scholarship annually. Since its inception as the Rotary Memorial College Loan and Scholarship Fund in 1922, the Fund has awarded scholarships to 87 students and made loans to over 400 students for a total of over $950,000. Winners are selected based upon GPA, test scores, community service, interview, and recommendations.

The Rotary Club of Davenport will be conducting a Fire Prevention and Safety community awareness project, this Saturday, April 12, 9:30 am - 1:00 pm. We are partnering with the American Red Cross and the Davenport Fire Department to distribute educational materials on fire prevention and safety and emergency procedures in the home.
All volunteers will meet in the St. Ambrose parking lot on West Lombard St. just East of North Gaines St. at 9:30 a.m. The Red Cross will provide vehicles to transport everyone around the community. Three neighborhoods will be targeted on the East side, North and Central areas of Davenport.

March 29, 2014 (Davenport, IA) - Congressional Representative Dave Loebsack will speak to the Rotary Club of Davenport on Monday, March 31. The meeting begins at noon at the Outing Club, with Rep. Loebsack speaking at approximately 12:20.
       Congressman Loebsack will be speaking on his life prior to Congress and his legislative priorities. He will also give a quick overview on the committees he serves on and the work that he's been doing this Congress.
Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz (http://sos.iowa.gov) will speak to the Rotary Club of Davenport on Monday, November 25. His topic will be the Business Services division of the Secretary of State's office.
Mr. Schultz will be available following the meeting for questions.

Matt Schultz was elected to office in 2010 as the youngest secretary of state in the country, and is currently serving his first term as Iowa Secretary of State. He was first elected to public office in 2005 as a city councilman in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he was re-elected and served for a total of five years.
Secretary Schultz has focused on streamlining business services, including a new statewide lien registration system, and advocating for the integrity of the elections process. He supports a voter identification law in Iowa, and has been pro-active in maintaining clean and accurate voter registration records in the state. Schultz has also worked to increase ease of access to voting for active members of the military from Iowa.
Secretary Schultz has established two new programs aimed at increasing voter participation in Iowa. Rock Iowa, which is a partnership with the nationally-recognized Rock the Vote organization, is an interactive class-based program for high school seniors to help educate them about the electoral process and encourage them to register to vote. Honor a Veteran with Your Vote is a program that encourages participants to register and vote to honor the sacrifices service men and women have made for our country. There is also a permanent online tribute page for participants to honor past or present military personnel.
Secretary Schultz is currently serving as Co-Chair of the Standing Committee on Voter Participation for the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS).
Secretary Schultz is a graduate of BYU-Idaho, the University of Iowa, and the Law School at Creighton University. He practiced law in Council Bluffs before being elected Iowa Secretary of State.
Schultz grew up in West Des Moines and is an Eagle Scout. He is active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served a two-year mission in Argentina. He and his wife, Zola, reside in Madison County with their five children.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Davenport distributes funds to local non-profits from the proceeds of the club's fundraising events. The following awards will be announced at noon today at the club's weekly meeting at the Outing Club. Representatives from the various organizations will be present to receive their awards.

The 2013 Charitable Fund Recipients are:

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Career Development institutes' for Matches creating a series of Saturday "Institutes" for at least 100 middle and high school students matched in our Career Navigator program. $1,000.

Family Resources, Inc.: Emergency Assistance Fund for Scott County Families to assist with gas, bus tickets/tokens, translation services, etc. $1,500.

Hand In Hand: Inspiration Studio, Art For Individuals With Disabilities is an adapted art program, which is a collaboration between local art professionals and artists with disabilities. $1,500.

Rick's House of Hope: Supply and Snack Stock Up to provide supplies to help with summer and fall programming. $1,000.

WQPT?Quad Cities PBS: The Ambassador Program is a unique opportunity for college students to develop and implement leadership skills through workshop presentations across the Quad Cities. $1,000.

Youth Harvest: Project for underprivileged youth to attend a fall harvest event. Project is done in cooperation with Rotary Club of North Scott. $1,500.

Handicapped Development Center: Assist in the purchase of a wheelchair?accessible scale to obtain accurate weight on wheelchair?bound individuals that are served through their Personal Independence Services program. $1,000.

District 6000 Grant: If awarded a District 6000 grant, the club will work with a local human trafficking organization to prevent trafficking in the Quad Cities. $2,500

Additionally, funds will be used to support FAMSCO/H.E.F. ($500), Miles of Smiles Team ($500), Military Appreciation Week ($500) and the MAC High School Awards ($175).

The Scholarship Committee is chaired by LaWanda Roudebush.  The Rotary Memorial College Loan and Scholarship fund was established with a $2,500 donation on May 29, 1922, in memory of the 276 men and women of Scott County Iowa that gave their lives during World War I. Along with donations from club members on their birthdays and significant other events, two major donations were received from James and Marguerite Dunn and Walter and Alice Ackerman.
Since its inception in 1922, the Fund has awarded scholarships to 82 students and made loans to over 400 students for a total of over $900,000. Winners are selected based upon GPA, test scores, community service, interview, and recommendations.
