Friends of Vander Veer and Davenport Parks and Recreation will kick off their summer theme for Vander Veer Botanical Park and Conservatory at a grand opening event on Tuesday, May 28 at 1:30pm at the Enabling Garden at Vander Veer, 214 W Central Park, in Davenport.  The theme for 2013 will be "Candy Land", featuring Hasbro's Candy Land board game and all of the Candy Land characters.  This fun and educational summer exhibit will be at Vander Veer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and is intended to provide children with a unique park experience, and help them develop an appreciation for aesthetics, nature, plants and science.

The "Candy Land" exhibits will feature interpretive signs, plant labels with candy related names, scents or colors, backpacks to check out filled with educational components linked to each "Candy Land" character and site, character cut-outs and display items, and special programs for families, children and adults.

Redesigned characters and components for the "Candy Land" theme were done by local artists and Central High School Art students who were recipients of a Quad City Arts ArtDollars Grant.  Character components relate to science, botany, nature, water ecosystems, color and senses.   Characters will be located throughout Vander Veer and paired with an educational component.

Additional programming offered throughout the summer based on the "Candy Land" theme will include :

• Gooey and Good- June 13th 5:30-6:30pm (Family class about making healthy snacks)
• Minty Concoctions- June 27th, 5:30-6:30pm (Adult class about making refreshing summer beverages using mint from the garden)
• Sweet Secrets of Modern Flavorings- July 11th, 5:30-6:30pm (A secondary youth class about the history and origin of spices and flavorings such as vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon)
• My Little Wheelbarrow- June 12th- July 24th, 10-11am (Youth program with nature, gardening, and science)

What: "Candy Land" Grand Opening

When: Tuesday, May 28, 1:30pm

Where: Vander Veer Botanical Park Enabling Garden  214 W Central Park, Davenport IA

Davenport, Iowa, March 18, 2013 - Community Action of Eastern Iowa and Davenport Parks and Recreation are partnering to provide need based scholarships for summer activities for Iowa youth. Community Action of Eastern Iowa has setup a scholarship fund of $10,000 for low income families provided by the Iowa Department of Human Rights, through the Community Services Block Grant.

Scholarships are being provided to Iowa families with households at or below 125% of the Federal poverty line. These scholarships will provide healthy, active, engaging recreational activities to youth from families that would be unable to afford such opportunities on their own. Youth from our community will have the opportunity to explore nature, dance, athletics, and theatre regardless of income.

Davenport Parks and Recreation offers a wide range of quality programming which maximizes the range of opportunities available to match the interests of children. Because Davenport Parks and Recreation was willing to provide a discount for these families, and because the two organizations worked together to streamline the process, the funding will reach more families than would otherwise be the case. A child enrolling in a ten week course will receive a summertime full of learning and memories.

"Initially Community Action of Eastern Iowa approached Davenport Junior Theatre about setting up a potential scholarship," according to Daniel Sheridan, Performing Arts Director for Davenport Parks and Recreation. "We soon shifted the idea to span the whole scope of Davenport Parks and Recreation, realizing that this would allow kids more opportunities. The goal is to keep kids learning and playing all summer long to help combat
summer learning loss. So more options seemed like a good thing."

The process to obtain the scholarship is by voucher. All applicants must apply in person at the office of Community Action of Eastern Iowa (500 East 59th Street, Davenport) and bring the most recent tax return or 90 days proof of income. Social Security Cards for all household members are also required. Community Action of Eastern Iowa will determine income eligibility of the household utilizing 125% of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL), in accordance with the rules of the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG). All applicants must have Iowa household residency.

Community Action of Eastern Iowa will complete the Scholarship Voucher for qualifying households and will give the voucher to the qualifying parent. The qualifying parent will take the completed voucher to Davenport Parks and Recreation at their River's Edge office, 700 West River Drive, to enroll in one approved multi-week course up to the amount indicated on the voucher. The voucher is only good for multi-week summer course offerings.

Funding is limited. When all funds are exhausted the program will end.

- Goals: Continue momentum, build on successful 2011 event -

Davenport, Iowa - Residents of the Davenport and the greater Quad Cities will join with thousands of other Iowans in a one-kilometer Healthiest State Walk at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 3. Local walkers will meet at the River's Edge, 700 West River Drive. We will walk from River Drive to Credit Island and back, with an option for those that would like to hike around the 2.3 miles island.

State organizers hope to involve even more than the 291,000-plus Iowans who participated in the Healthiest State Initiative's "Start Somewhere" walk in 2011. A kilometer is about 7.5 city blocks, a 12-minute stroll for the average walker. Walkers can sign up for the event at www.iowahealthieststate.com.

"Iowans showed their extraordinary support of the Healthiest State Initiative with last year's walk," said Theresa Hauman, local coordinator. "By itself, of course, a one-kilometer walk is not enough to change the health of the state, but we're encouraging even more residents of the Davenport and greater Quad City area to join in this year's event and maintain our momentum toward becoming the healthiest state."

In 2011, Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds announced the plan to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation within five years as measured by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index®. In 2011, Iowa ranked 16th compared to all other states, up from the 19th position in 2010.

"The intent of the Healthiest State Walk is to encourage Iowans to take their own steps that will help us improve our state's well-being rank," Branstad said when announcing the 2012 walk date. "The Healthiest State Initiative this year will continue to champion existing well-being programs with special emphasis on encouraging local walk groups, workplace well-being, consumption of fruits and vegetables, and smoking cessation. Progress in these areas will translate to a healthier Iowa and better quality of life for all its residents."

The Healthiest State Initiative is a privately led, public effort that engages Iowans and their communities throughout the state. It involves individuals, families, businesses, faith-based organizations, not-for-profits and the public sector in a broad-based community-focused effort. For more information, visit www.iowahealthieststate.com.
