Scott County-wide Burn Ban

Per the request of the Scott County Fire Chief Association, a county-wide open burn ban will be effective at 6:00 PM this evening.

Below find a copy of the proclamation and an excerpt from the Iowa Code which identifies exception to this ban (recreational fires, etc.)

IOWA CODE SECTION 100.40

100.40 Marshal may prohibit open burning on request.

  1. The state fire marshal, during periods of extremely dry conditions or under other conditions when the state fire marshal finds open burning constitutes a danger to life or property, may prohibit open burning in an area of the state at the request of the chief of a local fire department, a city council or a board of supervisors and when an investigation supports the need for the prohibition. The state fire marshal shall implement the prohibition by issuing a proclamation to persons in the affected area. The chief of a local fire department, the city council or the board of supervisors that requested the prohibition may rescind the proclamation after notifying the state fire marshal of the intent to do so, when the chief, city council or board of supervisors finds that the conditions responsible for the issuance of the proclamation no longer exist.

  1. Violation of a prohibition issued under this section is a simple misdemeanor.

3. A proclamation issued by the state fire marshal pursuant to this section shall not prohibit a supervised, controlled burn for which a permit has been issued by the fire chief of the fire district where the burn will take place, the use of outdoor fireplaces, barbecue grills, properly supervised landfills, or the burning of trash in incinerators or trash burners made of metal, concrete, masonry, or heavy one-inch wire mesh, with no openings greater than one square inch.

Establish out-of-town contacts.
Establishing out-of-town contacts can be essential during a disaster if you are separated from family members.
It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than a call across town, so an out-of-town contact may be in
a better position to communicate among separated family members. Make sure everyone has correct and up-to-
date numbers for those contacts stored in their phones and in their wallets.

Make a record of your personal property for insurance purposes. Take photos or video of the
interior and exterior of your home. Include personal belongings in your inventory. You may
want to download the free Household and Personal Property Inventory Book from the University

possessions. Store your photos or video contents of your home on your e-mail or in an alternate
location.

Scott County-wide Burn Ban in Lifted

Effective 1:45 pm today the county-wide burn ban has been lifted with the approval of the Scott County Fire Chiefs.

March 14,  2012

At the request of the Scott County Fire Chiefs a county wide burn ban is being requested effective immediately.  Coordination with the State Fire Marshal Office will be finalized Thursday morning on this request.  We expect an official ban to be approved tomorrow.  Due to the extremely dry conditions, the Chiefs are requesting this ban be in effect until measurable rainfall is experienced.

member. You should retain a copy by either storing a hard copy in a plastic bag, safety deposit
box, on a thumb drive or send to an email account that is accessible from anywhere.

Region 6 Homeland Security Board and Safeguard Iowa Partnership Announce Kick Off of "20 Weeks to Preparedness Program"

Are you prepared for an emergency? Whether it be a tornado, flood, terrorism, or other disaster event, citizens
need to be prepared in order to take care of their family, neighbors, and community.

How well are you prepared? Ask yourself these three questions from the Red Cross Ready Quotient Survey:

1. In the last year have you made a specific plan for how you and your family would communicate in an
emergency situation if you were separated?

2. In the last year, have you prepared a disaster supply kit with emergency supplies, like water, food, and
medicine that is kept in a designated place in your home?

3. In the last year, have you established a specific meeting place to reunite in the event you and your
family cannot return home or are evacuated?

Everyone needs to be able to take care of themselves, their family, and possibly their neighbors in the initial
stages of a disaster event. However, the task of preparing for such an event can seem to be overwhelming and
costly. This is why the Region 6 Homeland Security Board and Safeguard Iowa Partnership have partnered
to bring the "20 Weeks to Preparedness Program" to your area. This program will help prepare you and your
family, a little at a time, over a 20 week period.

Each week new preparedness information will be shared in this publication including a list of items to gather
or purchase for your disaster supply kit. You may also sign up at www.safeguardiowa.org/subscribe-to-be-
prepared to receive weekly reminders and announcements that will help you and your family become prepared.

By participating in this 20 Weeks to Preparedness Program:
• You and your family will be prepared for any emergency.
• You will develop an emergency kit (home and vehicle).
• You will develop a family communications plan.
• You will develop/test your home evacuation plan.
• You will have copies of important documents and document contents of your home.
• You will be self sufficient during an emergency.
• You will improve your health, your family's health, and the health and well being of our community
during an emergency.
