Rock Island, IL, March 4, 2015 - There are not many flavors more quintessential to the Quad Cities than Boetje's Mustard.  Now with the help of a local distillery, this classic is getting a new twist.  This Friday, Boetje's and Mississippi River Distilling Company will take the wraps off of their new collaboration.  "Boetje's Bourbon Barrel Aged Mustard" has soaked for over a month in used Cody Road Bourbon casks.

"We were looking for ways to put a new twist on an old favorite."  said Boetje's production manager Harrison Kropp.  "We saw some interesting barrel aged mustards at the World-Wide Mustard Competition in Wisconsin last year.  So we thought it would be great to give it a try with Boetje's."

Ryan Burchett, owner and distiller at Mississippi River Distilling Company, said he didn't have to think twice about the project.  "It was a total no-brainer for us.  We were humbled to have such an established brand like Boetje's reach out to us for something like this.  It's an honor to have our name on the same label as one of our all time favorites."

The distillery gave Kropp some oak whiskey casks that had been used to age Cody Road Bourbon Whiskey.  After soaking for more than 30 days in the barrel, the mustard is ground and prepared for sale.  "It brings a unique sweetness to our mustard along with the signature Boetje's punch." added Kropp.  "I think this one is going to be a big hit once the grills start firing up."

"Our brand is all about being local." said Burchett.  "Cody Road Bourbon is made from grain sourced directly from local farmers within 25 miles of our distillery.  So to find a new local partner to do something totally different like this is a ton of fun for us."

The mustard is being made in small batches.  Initially it will only be available at the gift shops at Boetje's and Mississippi River Distilling Company.  Boetje's representatives will be at the distillery Friday night from 5:30 to 8 PM for the monthly "First Friday" celebration in LeClaire.  They will have the mustard for sale along with free samples of the new spicy treat.

Mississippi River Distilling will also be introducing a new limited edition whiskey collaboration with Great River Brewing in Davenport that evening.  Farmer Brown Whiskey was made by distilling the alcohol out of over 3,000 gallons of Farmer Brown Ale from the local brewery.  This whiskey will be available for a short time at the distillery and through local retailers around Iowa and Illinois.

NOTE:  Distillery representatives will be at Boetje's 2736 12th St. in Rock Island on Thursday, March 5 at 10:30 AM to help bottle the mustard.  Please contact Boetje's if you would like to attend.

Le Claire, Iowa, September 10, 2014 - Mississippi River Distilling Company is breaking ground on a new barrel storage warehouse and patio area in downtown LeClaire.  The nearly four year old distillery is increasing their footprint in order to age more of their popular Cody Road Bourbon and Cody Road Rye whiskies.

The project has been talked about since the distillery's inception in 2010.  "The city owned the land directly south of our building and the vision was always to have some sort of public plaza there." said Mississippi River Distilling Company owner Ryan Burchett.  "The idea was to break up the buildings and allow for river views from the highway.  But we never figured out the details on how it was to be developed because the empty lot to our south hasn't been developed yet."

Over the years, demand for the distillery's Cody Road whiskies has grown.  They now have distribution in 22 states and 3 foreign countries.  "We're thrilled that people want our whiskies.  But with more people buying it, we have to be putting more away in barrels to keep up with demand on down the road." Said Burchett.

As space got tight in the existing facility, owners say the perfect opportunity presented itself right beside them.  "We needed space and the city had an empty lot sitting next door."  Said owner Garrett Burchett.  "So we offered to purchase the lot and develop it in exchange for a public easement on top that would allow for visitors to access the plaza area as originally envisioned.  We gained over 1,400 square feet of barrel storage and a patio; the city gets the public area we all hoped for from the beginning."

LeClaire Mayor Bob Scannell says it is a win-win for everyone.  "From the City's perspective, we have a great business in LeClaire that continues to grow.  With this investment, the distillery gets stronger and we get a nice addition to our riverfront.  It's all done with private dollars and returns the land to the tax rolls. It's just great progress for all of us."

Burchett says the construction should be complete in about 6 weeks. "It's kind of like a big concrete garage, so it shouldn't take too long.  The top will be at street level and will be a large patio with public access from Highway 67.  Our tasting room will have a door out to the plaza as well.  Underneath will be a 57 by 25 foot barrel room."  The project is being handled by Friemel Construction of Bettendorf.

As this construction commences, LeClaire city officials are beginning to consider a separate brewery project to the north of the distillery.  The new Green Tree Brewing Company goes before the LeClaire Planning and Zoning committee on Thursday with hopes to break ground on the LeClaire riverfront later this fall.  "With everything going on in downtown LeClaire, we through this would be the perfect location for our new brewery."  said owner Richard Day.  "With the distillery next door, we think it will make the area even more of a destination and give LeClaire another first class attraction."

The brewery also plans construction of a similar plaza area just north of their building.  "The City has another 25 foot plaza area just north of our development." said Day.  "We're proposing to handle the construction exactly the same way as the distillery has.  We think it's a great solution for all involved."

Le Claire, Iowa, April 2, 2014 - A small distillery in Eastern Iowa is turning heads all over the country with their award winning handmade spirits.  Mississippi River Distilling Company in LeClaire, Iowa has recently been recognized with 8 different awards at international tasting competitions.

Most significantly, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition has awarded MRDC's River Rose Gin with a gold medal.  This competition is widely regarded as one of the top competitions in the US and features brands from all around the world.  Distillers and importers submitted 1,474 spirits from 63 countries into the competition.

"We are obviously big fans of our gin, but we are blown away by this recognition."  Said owner and distiller Ryan Burchett.  "It is such a distinctive spirit that we were afraid it might be too unique to do well in a broad tasting like this.  We were thrilled to hear the judges liked it as much as we do."

River Rose Gin wasn't the only spirit from Mississippi River Distilling Company recognized in the competition.  Cody Road Bourbonreceived a silver medal while Cody Road Rye Whiskey and River Pilot Vodka also received bronze medals.

The Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago sent more accolades for MRDC spirits as well.  The annual tasting event there honored Cody Road Bourbon and Cody Road Rye with silver medals with River Rose Gin grabbing a bronze medal.  BTI relies heavily on highly experienced, professional guest tasters who are either retailers, restaurateurs, or prominent writers that are especially knowledgeable about the beverage category being reviewed.  All panelists are rigorously screened and audited and then trained in BTI's proprietary blind tasting methodology.

Tasting notes for Cody Road Bourbon included, "Bright amber color. Interesting aromas of singed praline, waxed wood, fruitcake and faint pepper smoked jerky with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a racy, candied citrus and nuts, baking spices, cocoa, salted caramel, white pepper, and cedar finish. Good depth and intensity for cocktails."

The BTI team "highly recommended" the Cody Road Rye Whiskey by noting, "Golden amber color. Aromas of oily roasted nuts, suede, dried fruits, and toasted meringue with a silky, dryish medium body and a smooth and even, rye dough, honeyed raisin toast, cedar, and mineral finish. Refreshing restraint, refinement and subtlety that grows on you when sipping."

BTI described River Rose Gin as, "Clear. Aromas of licorice gum, white balsamic marinated pears, pepper muffin and a whiff of latex with a satiny, dryish medium body and a mint-herb lozenge, grass, and white pepper accented finish."

The final award came from the American Craft Distillers Association where a group of MRDC's peers selected River Rose Ginas a bronze medal winner at their annual conference in February.  The event in Denver brought together craft distillers and professionals from all around the country.  The tasting allowed distillers to get feedback from others in the craft business.

"This award might mean as much as any of them."  Said owner and distiller Garrett Burchett.  "When the people who are out trying to make a living out of this stuff every day tell you you're doing a good job, it is exciting and truly humbling."

These awards are on the heels of additional national recognition in Country Living Magazine where their Cody Road Bourbon was selected as one of the magazine's favorite bourbons made outside of Kentucky.  Whisky Advocate Magazine also recently featured the Cody Road Whiskies in their tasting notes and buying guide along with a feature on the distillery on the magazine's blog.

Mississippi River Distilling Company is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 PM Sundays.  Free tours are offered to the public daily on the hour from 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.

Le Claire, Iowa, February 3, 2014 - Proving they are "Still Crazy," Mississippi River Distilling Company will release a new limited bottling in their Still Crazy series, "Six Shooter Smoke" on Friday, February 7.  There were just over 1,000 bottles of this specialty made.  This is rye whiskey with a cherry wood smoked six row barley added to give it a sweet, smoky nose and finish.

"We've had fun messing around with unusual flavors." said owner and distiller Ryan Burchett.  "Smoke flavor is nothing new to whiskey as Scotch whiskies are well known for their peaty smoke flavor.  But by using cherry wood smoked barley, this whiskey finished with a sweetness and smoke that is more reminiscent of a barbecue than a bottle of Scotch."

On Friday, February 7, MRDC will also be celebrating First Friday.  Chef Steph will have Six Shooter Smoke Cheddar fondue along with chocolate and Iowa Coffee Company Coffee Liqueur fondue to taste.  We'll be featuring the Moscow Mule made with River Pilot Vodka, fresh lime juice and ginger beer in the tasting room along with a Cody Road Hot Toddy.  Just what you need to get through this long winter!

The second in the Union Jack series of pint glasses will also be available Friday night.  For every bottle of spirits you purchase, you'll receive a pint glass that says "God Save The Gin."  Also available to purchase are is first of the series, "Stay Calm, Drink Whiskey" glass.

Mississippi River Distilling Company is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 PM Sundays.  Free tours are offered to the public daily on the hour from 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.  The tour takes visitors through the entire distilling process.  Tours end in the Grand Tasting Room with free samples of products for those patrons over 21 years of age.

Le Claire, Iowa, January 8, 2014 - While he distills whiskey for a living, Mississippi River Distilling Company's distiller Scot Schaar is big into fermenting brew at home as well.  Schaar was recently honored as the 2013 Iowa Homebrewer of the Year.

To be eligible for this distinction, a homebrewer must enter and place in three of four competitions throughout the year in the state.  The competitions are held all over Iowa with 26 different categories and sub categories.  Each entry in the various categories earns points.  Schaar entered multiple brews in each competition.

Schaar was also honored as the runner up in the 2013 Midwest Homebrewer of the Year (MWHBOY) competition.  This competition encompasses 13 Midwest states and 15 competitions throughout the year.  Points are accumulated by winning first, second or third place in any of the homebrew competitions in the MWHBOY Circuit.  A brewer's accumulated points are multiplied by his winning percentage (his ratio of medals to entries) to calculate his net score, upon which the competition's rankings are based.  In 2013, Schaar medaled with 26 of his entries.

"I've been entering competitions for 10 years, a little more serious in the last three to four years and then sending samples out to farther competitions," Schaar says.  "The competitions really help with brewing by reading the judges' feedback as well as talking to other homebrewers and hearing other techniques.  Craft beer has gotten huge in the past five to ten years.  My equipment and craft has also grown over that time starting with just a pot on the kitchen stove to now having a fairly extensive system in my garage."

In addition to entering homebrew competitions, Schaar also judges similar homebrew competitions.  He says judging is another good way to expand your palate and learn things to incorporate into his own beers.

Schaar has one more prestigious competition to go.  He has two beers qualified for the Master's Championship of Amateur Brewing competition (MCAB).  This is an annual national championship competition for homebrewers.  Brewers qualify for this event by competing in various qualifying events.  Placing first in any MCAB recognized category qualifies the entrant for admission into the MCAB championship competition, known as a "champions' championship" in the homebrew circuit.

Schaar started at Mississippi River Distilling Company in October 2012.  He had watched the business from the ground up and often helped during bottling nights and other events.  His knowledge of brewing naturally translated into distilling.  "His brewing background has been a huge asset to Scot and to our company."  said owner Ryan Burchett.  "Until it goes into the still, making whiskey is a brewing process.  So we've definitely learned from him. He has a real passion that shows in his beers and in the spirits he makes here.  We're really excited that he is getting some formal recognition for it."

MRDC distillers finally figured out a way to put a local slant on rum which is typically made from sugar cane or molasses; neither of which are in great supply in Iowa. They've used sorghum syrup made in Lynnville, Iowa and fermented and distilled it.  It went into new charred oak barrels and then was blended with a sugar cane base spirit for a uniquely smooth sipper like you'd expect from MRDC.
