ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (July 12, 2023) — The Midwest Writing Center will host a Community Conversation Brown Bag event on Thursday afternoon, July 27, at the Rock Island Public Library Downtown Branch. The event will feature memoirist and Davenport native Ben Miller, and award-winning poet Ann Pierson Wiese, who will talk about their work, their life together in writing, and why they believe writing is important.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (May 31, 2023) — The 2023 David R Collins Writers’ Conference will hold a book fair for local/regional authors, publishers, booksellers, and more. The event will be held Saturday, June 24, 10AM-4PM, Gävle Hall (in the Gerber Center for Student Life, Augustana College, 3435 9 ½ Ave, Rock Island, Illinois). A conference-registration fee not required to participate in the books fair. Tables for participants are $10, or two for $20.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (May 12, 2023) — After twenty-plus years, the David R Collins Writers’ Conference (formerly known as the Mississippi Valley Writers’ Conference) will return to the campus of Augustana College this summer, June 22-24. Featuring our stellar Conference Faculty (Kali White VanBaale, Keith Pilapil Lesmeister, Jesus “Chuy” Renteria, and Rebecca Wee) leading three-day workshops, participating in a Community Conversation keynote event, and holding a public reading.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (March 16, 2023) — SPECTRA Lives! The longest-running reading series in the Quad Cities, presented by the Midwest Writing Center, returns to Rozz-Tox, 2108 3rd Ave, Rock Island, on Friday, March 31, to celebrate the release of Emily Kingery’s début poetry chapbook Invasives, recently released by Finishing Line Press.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (February 13, 2023) — The Midwest Writing Center is taking registrations for its 15th annual Iron Pen Contest. MWC will supply a prompt to all contestants at 5PM, Friday, February 24, and contestants have 24 hours (entries are due Saturday, February 25, 5PM) to write and submit their best fiction, non-fiction, and/or poetry pieces. Writers are welcome to enter into as many categories as they like with a paid registration for each entry.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (October 10, 2022) — SPECTRA Lives! The Quad Cities reading series, c/o The Midwest Writing Center, returns to Rozz-Tox on Thursday, October 20, at 8PM (7PM doors), to celebrate the release of Skylar Alexander’s debut poetry collection Searching for Petco, released earlier this year by the estimable Forklift Books.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (July 19, 2022) — The Midwest Writing Center is excited to return to Rozz-Tox for our live reading series SPECTRA. This event will showcase interns from 2022’s Young Emerging Writers Program as well as alum of the program. KAS Music will open the event with a thirty-minute original set.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (April 12, 2022) — Midwest Writing Center (MWC) and the SPECTRA Reading Series are hosting a showcase of local poets and writers at Rozz-Tox, 2108 3rd Ave, Rock Island, on Thursday, April 28. This is in celebration of National Poetry Month, which is held by the Academy of American Poets each year and is “the largest literary celebration in the world.”
