River Action hosts its eighth-annual event promoting recreational water trails, canoeing, kayaking, and safe paddling, with participants invited to spend the day paddling from five launch sites along the Mississippi River.
At 2:30 p.m., paddlers will gather in Sunset Park's Lake Potter for the traditional group photo and attempt to break the world record for largest connected raft of canoes and kayaks, a record currently held by Inlet New York and its 3,150 participants. This year's Floatzilla will also boast an attempt to beat the world record for biggest simultaneous kayak launch, with is currently set at 396.
Participants must provide their own equipment and wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD, with a limited supply of canoe and kayak rentals available from regional outfitters. Registration is $25-30 per paddler, and includes a Floatzilla T-shirt, decal, and shuttles to and from the off-site parking.
The annual event also features live music and food and beverages available for purchase (alcohol not permitted on Lake Potter), and more information on the day is available at Floatzilla.org and RiverAction.org.
