· Also fan-friendly (but excruciatingly expensive) is Metallica's current offer on the Internet auction service eBay. Bidding ends July 19 for a package that would allow the winner and a guest to sit in on the band's creative process by hanging out for a day at the group's private San Francisco studio. Airfare, hotel accommodations, rental car, and dinner with the band are included, but at press time the bidding has reached $41,000. Proceeds will go to charity.
· Def Leppard is back with its tenth album, simply titled X, this Tuesday on the Island Records label. The new album boasts different producers for each track and should be on the radar the weekend of August 2, when VH1 is airs the original movie Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story as well as the band's Storytellers, Rock Show '02, Ultimate Albums, and Behind the Music episodes.
· Now here's a hard one to wrap your head around. Pitch-a-Tent Records has announced next month's release of Tusk, an all-new Camper van Beethoven album. And yes, this project is a song-by-song tribute to the rather experimental Fleetwood Mac double-LP classic from 1979.
· Perhaps the Rolling Stones' tour launch in September is really all about publicizing the band's next media adventure, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards set to guest star on The Simpsons in November. The storyline is reported to feature Homer's trip to a rock-and-roll fantasy camp.
· My pick of the week is the recently released self-titled debut from the Twinemen, featuring saxophonist Dana Colley and drummer Billy Conway, born from the ashes of Morphine after the death of Mark Sandman. Now fronted by singer Laurie Sargent, the band retains that wonderfully spooky Morphine quality, a shadowy lounge-jazz groove that seductively drains the room to a cool and sensual black and white. Self-recorded and issued on the band's own Hi-N-Dry Records imprint, this late-night creeper is the perfect soundtrack for that hot summer Rumblefish film-noir vibe, prowling alleyways and dark barroom corners.
