· I let out a holler and a hoot over the smashing success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack at the 35th annual Country Music Association Awards in Nashville, as the set won best album and single for "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" by the Soggy Bottom Boys featuring vocalist Dan Tyminski.
If you feel as I do that the house band at the pearly gates will be Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, let me suggest another satisfying fix of Appalachian splendor: The Delmore Brothers. Your heart might skip a beat upon discovering the pair's twin harmonies and freight-train-boogie sound of pure Piney Woods front-porch soul. As household stars on the 1930s and '40s radio-show circuit, their sound was the undeniable inspiration for The Louvin Brothers and The Everly Brothers. Go forth, country boy, seek out "Blues Stay Away from Me" and be duly blessed.
· This Tuesday brings a time-machine trip from Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, as the band's early performances at Switzerland's annual Montreux Jazz Festival are released as Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985. The two-CD Epic Legacy set documents a special night in rock history: The 1982 show was booed by much of the audience. Well, except for David Bowie, who was completely floored and asked Vaughan that very night to join him on what would became the Let's Dance album and tour.
· Rickie Lee Jones releases her new Red Rocks live album this Tuesday, named for the majestic Denver, Colorado, amphitheater where it was recorded on this past year's tour. The Artemis Records release features hits such as "Chuck E's in Love" and covers of Van Morrison's "Gloria" and Gerry & The Pacemakers' "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying."
· Lots of tasty home-video and DVD offerings are looking to find a home in Christmas stockings this year. Fugazi releases its recent Instrument documentary on DVD next week, featuring three bonus live tracks and two short films by Jem Cohen. A Guided by Voices DVD is also due by month's end, promising a 60-minute concert from Los Angeles' Whiskey A Go Go and band practice sessions from Robert Pollard's Dayton, Ohio, home. Rhino Records has just issued the 1990 farewell performance from the grandfathers of Canadian punk, D.O.A., on VHS and DVD. Entitled Dirk Dirksen Presents: D.O.A. The End, this final act of chaos features a guest appearance by Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys as the band invades his hometown of San Francisco and Dirksen's Mad Fab nightclub. Also included are three music videos and a DVD-only interactive coloring book. U2 is issuing a two-DVD set next month, Elevation 2001: Live in Boston, featuring a 20-camera shoot that can become a viewer-controlled interactive experience. The DVD's second platter is packed with additional performances from other cities and an amazing time-lapse road movie that shows the staging of this huge production from empty arena to roaring crowd and back to an empty arena again.
