· Cover fever is the diagnosis this coming Tuesday, with three new releases boasting nifty interpretations that leave me stroking my chin in curiosity. Wynonna Judd's new album, What the World Needs Now Is Love on the Curb imprint, features covers of Elvis Presley's hit "Burning Love" and - dig this - guest guitarist Jeff Beck on her take on Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is. "

· Also on the country side of the tracks is Dirt on the Angel, the new solo album from Bad Livers founder Danny Barnes. The Terminus Records set features guests Bill Frisell and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell and covers of Beck's "Loser," The Faces' "Ooh La La," and the traditional "Keep My Skillet Good & Greasy."

· Jazz multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby weaves his jam-band chops throughout his new album, Four Chords & Seven Notes, on the newly re-born Artists House imprint. After he toured last year with the bluesy Susan Tedeschi, she returned the favor by lending her voice to a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Love's in Need of Love Today."

· Also in the cover spirit is this Tuesday's release of Shout, Sister, Shout: A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The 17-track collection gathers a who's-who of female blues and roots artists, gloriously reaching out and up with the jubilee of the late gospel singer. Highlights include Joan Osborne & The Holmes Brothers' sway of "Nobody's Fault but Mine," Bonnie Raitt's chilling slide guitar on "My Journey to the Sky" with Maria Muldaur, Janis Ian's finger-picking of "This Train," and the CD-ROM clip of Tharpe performing on TV Gospel Time in the 1960s. Other artists on the M.C. Records set include Toshi Reagon, Michelle Shocked, Tracy Nelson, and Phoebe Snow.

· Other interesting cover treats are promised later this fall with three indie bands sharing their takes on personal favorites. Portastatic's upcoming Autumn Was a Lark album on the Merge label will feature new studio tracks and rare acoustic radio-session covers of Bruce Springsteen's "Growin' Up," Ronnie Lane's "One for the Road," and Badfinger's "Baby Blue." Minty Fresh Records reports that Papas Fritas' new collection of rarities, Pop Has Freed Us, will feature covers of Tom Verlaine's "Flash Lightning" and Fleetwood Mac's "Book of Love." And Detroit's twin-drum punk-blues party assault, The Dirtbombs, have announced that their upcoming Dangerous Magical Noise features gotta-hear covers of Robyn Hitchcock's "Executioner of Love" and Brian Eno's "King's Lead Hat."
