· This Tuesday brings the solo debut CD from Jesse Malin, and it's one of those magical albums that really digs its teeth in deep with repeated listenings, a neon-cool collection of melodic Americana moments that resonate from the suburbs to the subway. Built originally from sparse demos of just Malin's voice and Joe McGinty's piano, the songs range from intimate and acoustic to full-snarl and climaxing. Produced by star troubadour Ryan Adams (who also contributes vocals and guitars throughout) the disc also features background vocalist Melissa Auf der Maur of Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins. Formerly of the punky D-Generation, Malin shows wicked depth as a pensive songwriter, with hints of Neil Young meeting Johnny Thunders for a cup of coffee outside the Brill Building, tapping their feet, searching for that perfect song. Entitled The Fine Art of Self Destruction and bearing the Artemis Records imprint, the American version of the CD features the bonus track "Cigarettes & Violets" and the hidden track "Brooklyn."

· Time-traveling from the past comes Chris Butler and his new CD, The Museum of Me, due this Tuesday on the Future Fossil Music label. Formerly of Waitresses - made forever famous by their 1980s classic "I Know What Boys Like" - Butler's latest offering of "bent pop" features a novel approach, as the album was recorded primarily on antique and obsolete devices and processes such as original Edison wax cylinders, wire-recording techniques from the 1940s, and do-it-yourself home-recording disc-cutting machines from the 1930s.
