· With the fever of television's Hit Me Baby One More Time thrusting stars of the 1980s back into the spotlight, Go-Go's bassist Kathy Valentine is preparing to drop her solo debut in September. She's also taking on lead-vocal and guitar duties for the album, Light Years, which will bear the imprint of her own All for One Records label. Cool guests are plentiful, with Ace Frehley of KISS, Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello's Attractions, Clem Burke of Blondie, and Gilby Clarke of Guns N' Roses.

· Drive-Thru Records has announced that its new salute to Bob Dylan is ready for release next month. Entitled Listen to Bob Dylan: A Tribute, the two-CD set is a labor of love for the label's owner, who selected a list of 40 songs for the invited artists to choose from. Hoping to turn on a younger generation to the iconic songwriter, the lineup is quite varied, with Jason Mraz reporting "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," the RX Bandits turning in "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll," and I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody's Business strolling down "Positively Fourth Street." Other artists involved include Cerys Matthews, Steel Train, Something Corporate, and House of Fools.

· Speaking of covers, this Tuesday brings one of the most unusual cover collections ever in the import-only release of Recovers by Albert Kuvezin & Yat Kha. Not familiar? No problem, as not many readers are from Tuva - a remote country in southern Siberia that's home to the unique style of "throat singing." Using their skulls as reverberation chambers for the deep bass tones originating in the throat, this group tackles a host of classic-rock staples long considered criminal and corruptive of Tuvan youth. Intrigued? Try to wrap your mind around the group's spin - or should I say hum - on Bob Marley's "Exodus," the Rolling Stones' "Play with Fire," or Motorhead's "Orgasmatron." Other tracks getting this wild treatment include Kraftwerk's "Man Machine," Captain Beefheart's "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles," Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," and Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks."

· Looking for something even more bizarre? Sony Music will release Songs from the Crystal Cave stateside this fall, already a hit in Italy and France, from none other that actor/martial-arts master Steven Seagal. A guitarist and songwriter his entire life, the album shows the influence of his world travels with guests Tyrone Downie and Al Anderson of the Wailers, Indian singer Kavita Subramaniam, and - dig this - Stevie Wonder blowing harmonica on "My God."
