Rage Against the Machine is currently putting the final touches on a new live album, recorded recently at Los Angeles' Grand Olympic Auditorium and dominated by an unusual selection of cover tracks like Devo's " Beautiful World" and MC5's "Kick Out the Jams.
" ... If you've caught some of PBS-TV's promotional spots for the fall season, you might have seen that documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is returning with a 10-part series on that most American of creations - jazz. The Columbia Legacy label has announced that it will release a five-CD box set in November as a companion to the PBS series, as well as 22 individual titles highlighting Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and many more. ... Two of punk rock's earlier heroes are breaking through the new century with new projects and lots of old moxie. Lyrical poet and legendary punk icon Keith Morris, formerly of the Circle Jerks and Black Flag, is now commanding his new band - Midget Handjob - and a new album, Midnight Snack Break At The Poodle Factory, released this Tuesday on the Epitaph label. Also new this week is the debut of Burn Witch Burn and its self-titled album on the Razier/Lightyear imprint, helmed by Rodney Linderman - formerly known as Rodney Anonymous of the Dead Milkmen. Burn Witch Burn promises a Celtic Goth Rock sound acoustically fueled by mandolin, banjolin, and hurdy-gurdy, and features a cool cover of the Rolling Stones' "Citadel." ... Dinosaur Jr.'s founder and guitar-bender J Mascis is set to debut his first music with his new band, The Fog, after a three-year absence. The album is called More Light and is due next month. The Artemis Records release features guests Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine and Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard. Would-be sultans of swat should look for a special contest in the pages of SCHWING magazine (yes - a modern-rock-meets-golfing journal) in which you could win the "play a round with J" contest.
