Look for the upcoming Fatboy Slim album, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, to include the track - and first single - "Sunset (Bird of Prey)," which is built upon a vocal sample of the Doors' Jim Morrison reading some of his poetry. The album will also feature guest vocal contributions from Macy Gray on two tracks, and is due in early November. ... Bill Laswell's Axiom label issues its latest engaging cross-cultural release this Tuesday - Tabla Beat Science's Tala Matrix. The album features master musician Zakir Hussain on the tabla - a principal drum of North Indian music, played in a paired set with fingers and wrists of both hands - and Asian underground "electro-tablatronics" pioneer Talvin Singh. ... Rickie Lee Jones is back in the spotlight with this Tuesday's Artemis Records release of It's Like This, a new album of uniquely selected cover material like Steely Dan's "Show Biz Kids," the Beatles' "For Now One," Traffic's "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," and the Gershwin classic "Someone to Watch Over Me." Adding to the intrigue is that the set is chock full of guests Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, Taj Mahal, and more. ... Tuesday also brings the original Hollywood Records motion picture soundtrack of Duets, set at an Omaha, Nebraska, $5,000 karaoke grand championship. The film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, who handles her own vocal duties on Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" and in a duet with Babyface on the Rolling Stones' "Just My Imagination (Running Away From Me)." Huey Lewis is also featured in the film, singing "Lonely Teardrops" and in a duet with Paltrow of the Smokey Robinson classic, "Cruisin'." ... Fire up your DVD players for a new experience to Smell the Glove in none-more-black. This week the MGM film group is releasing a special enhanced re-release of the 1984 mock "rockumentary" This Is Spinal Tap with a bonus hour of footage, four music videos, the film's original theatrical trailer, and running audio commentary from the in-character cast - which is different than the previously available Criterion Collection commentary.
