· A handful of benefit CDs are raising funds for worthwhile causes, including aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, all looking to find hope in your hearts and a few loose bucks in your wallet. This week Saddle Creek Records releases its own Red Cross/Katrina rescue CD, entitled Lagniappe, named for the little bonus surprise that is often given by old-school shopkeepers on the Gulf Coast. The 13-track set features new music from Bright Eyes and Cursive, an acoustic version of "No Evolution" by Orenda Fink, a Broken Spindles remix, and other songs from The Faint, Cocoon, and Sorry About Dresden.

· The brainiest of the bunch is Uncivilized World Records' Another World Is Possible project, supporting the international organization ATTAC, which wants airfare taxes to be used to fight global disease and pollution. Featuring a hardcover book with writings by Noam Chomsky and Naomi Klein, the CD contains the Asian Dub Foundation's twist on "Police on My Back," the Eddy Grant hit made popular by The Clash, and tracks from Moby, Manu Chao, Femi Kuti, and Underground Resistance.

· Lookout Records has settled down 26 hyperactive punk bands to produce its new Protect CD this week. Supporting the National Association to Protect Children (a nonpartisan group that's pro-child and anti-crime), the CD is packed with previously unreleased tracks from the Dillinger Four, Against Me!, and Anti-Flag, as well as a live version of "Want" by Jawbreaker.

· And due later this month comes Not Alone, a four-CD box set from Scotland's Durtro Records to benefit Doctors Without Borders in its fight against AIDS in Africa. Highlights include rarities from Jad Fair, Current 93, Thurston Moore, and Teenage Fanclub. Other artists on the smart track list include Will Oldham, Marc Almond, Faun Fables, Genesis P-orridge, and Jarboe.
