· This Tuesday the United States of Distribution imprint releases four CDs in its new BUZZOLA series, collecting vintage recordings into cleverly themed 18-track treasure troves. With songs reaching back as far as 1923 and into the Cold War era, each CD is meant to tickle, or caress, a different part of your brain and heart. Feeling blue over lost love? Sop your sorrows with the You Done Me Wrong collection of country cheating songs, including Tex Ritter's "When You Leave, Don't Slam the Door," The Carter Family's "Are You Tired of Me, Darlin'?", and the classic "Your Cheating Heart" by Hank Williams. Underground paranoid survivalists can find relief in the Like an Atom Bomb set, with the apocalyptic "Fireball Boogie" by Camille Howard, "Jesus Is the First Line of Defense" by The Pilgrim Travelers, and "When They Dropped the Atom Bomb" by Jackie Doll & His Pickled Peppers. Feeling sexy? Slip in the Sugar in My Bowl CD, with hard-drivin' mamas such as Lil Johnson's "Hot Nuts," Sippie Wallace's "A Man for Every Day of the Week," and Barrel House Annie's "If It Don't Fit (Don't Force It)." Songs for that post-coitus drag on some muggles are collected in the Reefer Madness set, with Leadbelly's "Take a Whiff On Me," Victoria Spivey's "Dope Head Blues," and Barney Bigard's "Sweet Marijuana Brown."

· This coming Monday, PBS television is premiering a 90-minute Phish concert filmed last year at the Loring Air Force Base in Maine, with select stations airing the special in high-definition. While they wait for the magic to begin, Phish-heads can get lost in the just-released second volume of the Mockingbird Foundation's Phish Companion: A Guide to the Band & Their Music from the Backbeat Books press. At a staggering 912 pages, this hefty tome is simply mind-boggling in its passion and detail, with every set list in existence, the history of more than 600 songs, and statistical analysis worthy of a master's dissertation. Obsessed with what song was ever played before and after every song in the band's bag? Looking for a loving, fan-penned review of every show they've played, the history of the band's fantastic Halloween performances, or the seating specifics of every venue they've played? It's all here, along with interviews, photos, taping guides, a 24-page dictionary of all things Phish, and the quality specifics of fan-circulated concert recordings. Obsessive? You betcha. But even for a casual fan, the love and energy of this work is something to sink deep into with a big grin, wishing every favorite band had such possessed apostles.
