• Fantômas, the enigmatic band helmed by Mike Patton of Faith No More, is taking a new direction this Tuesday with the release of Suspended Animation on Ipecac Records. While the collective has previously noodled in science-fiction fancies, the new CD is described as a lavishly designed project that dallies in all the sound effects and manic energy of cartoon music. Featuring a 30-page booklet/calendar by pop cartoonist Yoshimoto Nara, the sessions also feature Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins, Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle, and Dave Lombardo of Slayer.

• Some intriguing remix interpretations highlight the Crystal Method's release this Tuesday of Community Service II. The Ultra/3AM Records release features the DJ duo's workout on The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues," New Order's "Bizzare Love Triangle," and Smashing Pumpkins' "1979," alongside tracks from UNKLE, Evil Nine, and Uberzone.

• Overdosing at the altar of the cult of celebrity, Justin Moyer of El Guapo and Antelope has donned a black wig, a sparkly cocktail dress, and matching shoes and handbag, re-inventing himself as Edie Sedgwick. Yes, named for the same sad-little-rich-girl icon of Andy Warhol's "beautiful people" posse - and immortalized by The Cult in 1989 with "Edie (Ciao Baby)"; the real Sedgwick overdosed in 1971. Entitled Her Love Is Real ... But She Is Not, the result of all this cross-dressing has just been released by De Soto Records, and Moyer fills the CD with 14 star-struck songs obsessing over a grocery magazine rack of celebrities, from Haley Joel Osment and Lucy Liu to Robert Downey Jr. and Martin Sheen. Like Le Tigre meets Wesley Willis, Moyer's rants and sweaty basement beats are crazy fun, tumbling down the rabbit hole of curved walls plastered with covers of People magazine and candy wrappers, twitching to the paranoia of the electronic whip.

• In other obsessions of thin, pale-faced sweeties, Go Kart Records has announced its new Go Kart Films imprint, soon releasing DVDs of new independent films with its sister horror label, Vital Fluid. The "mockumentary" Far Too Gone, a Spinal Tap-esque winner at a handful of indie film festivals including last year's Golden Gate Fiction & Documentary Festival, stars director Brian Labrecque as a fan who really, truly thinks he is Tori Amos.

• Next week Ropeadope Records is re-issuing to the masses a spattering of lost titles that were once only available through the label's Web site. One highlight is Bane, the "secret" solo project from Mike Gordon of Phish under the name of Joey Arkenstat.
