It's a cover-ful world this month! This Tuesday brings the long awaited Bruce Springsteen tribute album from the SubPop label. But the 13-track set doesn't pull from SubPop's stable of post-grunge elite, instead collecting an interesting mix of rock, folk, and alternative-country giants taking their spins on selections from Springsteen's Nebraska album. Back in 1982, when it was originally released, Nebraska stunned fans with its rare demo quality of sparse acoustic and electric material recorded at home with simple four-track technology. With this new tribute, entitled Badlands, artists like Chrissie Hynde, Hank Williams III, Johnny Cash, Damien Jurado, Los Lobos, Son Volt, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, Ben Harper, Aimee Mann and husband Michael Penn, and Raul Malo of The Mavericks salute this highly influential favorite. A portion of the proceeds from Badlands will benefit the Nobel Prize-winning Doctors Without Frontiers medical-relief organization. ... More "let me take a stab at that one" madness of the electronic sort bleeps and blips its way this next week in Carrot Top Records' tribute to the Human League. Entitled Reproductions, this one chirps props to these droll early 1980s' British new-wavers with cover contributions from Momus, Stephin Merritt, Future Bible Heroes, Ladytron, and The 6ths with guest Lloyd Cole. ... The death of Snot's James Lynn Strait prompted friends to pay tribute to his life with Strait Up on the Immortal/Virgin imprint this Tuesday. Some of those involved include members of Korn, Soulfly, System of a Down, Sugar Ray, Slipknot, Sevendust, and Coal Chamber. ...For further studies in the cover kingdom, I recommend searching out the unbelievable take on AC/DC's classic "Hells Bells" found on the new Dandy Warhols import-only CD single of "Bohemian Like You."
