· On a mini-tour of a dozen dates across North America and the crowning glory of the Coachella Festival in May, the newly re-formed Pixies are pushing west with a technical vengeance, offering a new anthology DVD this Tuesday and a series of "instant gratification" live CDs sold after every night's show.
From 4AD Records, the self-titled DVD collects eight music videos and rare concert footage (in 5.1-channel audio) from 1988 at London's Town & Country Club. Most exciting is the inclusion of the documentary film Gouge, with guest commentary from Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, Alex James and Graham Coxon of Blur, PJ Harvey, David Bowie, Bono, Fran Healy of Travis, Tim Wheeler of Ash, and Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy). All 13 of the band's current "warm up" dates are part of the new DiscLive experience, in which each night's show is piped directly into a rolling CD-manufacturing plant outside the club, and 15 minutes after the show is over, 1,000 CDs of that night's performance are sold, first come, first served. Any remaining unsold copies will wind up on DiscLive's Web site, and surely later for big bucks on eBay. Each double-CD in the series, simply entitled Pixies Live, can also be pre-ordered through the site, or purchased at the venue and shipped home.
· Jimmie's Chicken Shack releases its fifth album next week, bearing the Koch imprint and the title Re.Present. Hanging out at the shack was productive for a handful of interesting new friends, as founding member Jimi Haha co-wrote much of this new album with pals John Wozniak of Marcy Playground, Art Alexakis of Everclear, and Mark Tremonti from Creed. Only one co-author became part of his song's recording, with Aaron Lewis of Staind and his guest duet with Haha on "Fallin' Out."
