One of indie rock's most valuable players, Solid Public Relations, has just released a nifty benefit album packed with clients from its roster. Simply entitled Solid PR Presents: Volume 1, the two-CD set raises funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the firm is already looking toward a second volume to be released in January.
Boasting exclusive tracks from Shortstack, Upsilon Acrux, The Static Age, Thunderball Fist, The Braves, and Ponies in the Surf, the collection also features music from The Unicorns, The Broadway Project, Hella, Man Man, I Am the World Trade Center, Crystal Skulls (featuring members of Pedro the Lion), Jesu (featuring Justin Broadrick of Napalm Death), and more.
· More news has surfaced about Rhino Records' upcoming Ramones box set, due August 16. Alongside 85 tracks on three CDs and a bonus DVD, an enclosed comic book will feature 25 hot graphic artists including Mad magazine's Sergio Aragones, Zippy the Pinhead creator Bill Griffiths, and Love & Rockets co-founder Xamie Hernandez.
· The Flaming Lips have graciously opened up the gates to download the eight-track CD soundtrack to their recently released Fearless Freaks DVD documentary. Fire up (http://www.125hz.com) for free access to the tracks, including color artwork.
· This coming Tuesday the Family Recordings imprint will release a DJ's dream in the second volume of its 12-inch/'80s series, spotlighting a treasure trove of rare extended 12-inch mixes that would be a gold mine in a milk crate if you could ever collect them all in their original vinyl form. The three-CD set features all the club classics of the 1980s, with Pigbag's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," Grace Jones' "Slave to the Rhythm," Malcolm McLaren's "Madame Butterfly," Duran Duran's "The Reflex," New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle," Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls," and 28 more. Other artists dishing out these 12-inch only gems include The Cure, Spandau Ballet, Visage, Soft Cell, ABC, and Siouxsie & the Banshees.
· Speaking of second volumes, later this month Compadre Records is releasing 21 more songs in its Brewed in Texas series. Featuring music to tap a keg by, the CD features new originals, covers, and other liquid favorites from a hard-drinkin' honky-tonk bunch, from Townes Van Zandt, Asleep at the Wheel, and Billy Joe Shaver to Bob Schneider, The Derailers, and the Old 97's. Like any good country-and-western classic, the wit and wisdom of intoxication is alive and well in songs such as "She's Acting Single (I'm Drinking Double)," "Lubricate the Death Machine," "Fermented Evenings," and "I Say When I Drink What I Think When I'm Sober."
