· Another soundtrack due this Tuesday looks to be rockin' Mississippi style with contributions by R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Kenny Brown, and Robert Belfour. The Nonesuch Records set, Big Bad Love, is highly anticipated by Tom Waits fans as it contains two new tracks, "Long Way Home" and "Jayne's Blue Wish." Waits has recently signed with the indie Anti Records label and looks to release two new albums in May, entitled Blood Money and Alice.
· Hüsker Dü founder Bob Mould is poised to release three separate CDs this year. This first release, Modulate, is due next month on his own Granary Music label and will feature his signature guitar sound alongside electronic elements. Later this year he'll issue Long Playing Grooves, a disc made up of loop-based electronica, and Body of Song, promising more of his acoustic-guitar compositions.
· The DV8/Columbia Records label has announced that it will release a Ramones tribute album this spring featuring cover salutes from Rob Zombie, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Offspring, Green Day, and Rancid.
· Speaking of tribute albums, the Rykodisc/Praxis label is putting the final touches on an upcoming collection of Kinks covers entitled This Is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies & The Kinks. The lineup includes Yo La Tengo, Fountains of Wayne, Queens of the Stone Age, Fastball, Lambchop, Cracker, Ron Sexsmith, and Jonathan Richman.
· Back in 1993, KRS-One asked the magical question, "Do you remember how long 'Superrappin'' was?" The query referenced the 12-minute Grandmaster Flash classic track. Fast forward to 2000, when the Cologne, Germany, label Groove Attack Records debuted its Superrappin' collection of indie hip-hop, blowing up on deep rumbling turntables worldwide. The always-tasty label has recently served up the two-CD or three-LP Superrappin' Volume Two, without a doubt the must-have hip-hop compilation this season. The under-the-radar artists of this collection are dedicated to the art of flow, old-school pleasures, and basement-party showmanship. Highlights include Biz Markie's "Turn tha Party Out," Mike Zoot & Labba's "Spread Love," Mr. Lif's "Ol' Crew," and Obscure Disorder's "Last Call Part 2." This savory delight for the ears bursts and rolls with a freshness that resurrects the new-jack soul with more similarities to the poetry of John Gornio than ganster lean. Highly recommended.
