• Uncannily timed with the recent death of Johnny Ramone, two new documentary films are telling the story of the three-chord foursome from Forest Hills, Queens, with one film recently debuting in New York and the other arriving on DVD next week. A traveling art-theater film, End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones, will open in 10 Midwestern cities in October. The Magnolia Pictures release chronicles these godfathers of punk from their humble CBGB beginnings to the deaths of Joey and Dee Dee to the band's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. The Image Entertainment DVD, Ramones Raw, brings the Blitzkrieg Bop right into your living room with more than five hours of material. Surviving member Marky Ramone served as executive producer, and highlights include eight rare television appearances, vintage concert footage from 1980, personal video archives, and guest cameos by Carly Simon, Bono and U2, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, and "Grandpa" Al Lewis of The Munsters fame.

• More New York City state of mind can be found in the just-released concert CD Lightning in a Bottle, filmed and recorded there last February. Director Martin Scorsese produced the superstar concert event, entitled a Salute to the Blues, after getting deep in the history of the genre in his own PBS television series. Benefiting the Blues Music Foundation, the night was full of interesting duets and collaborations, as with Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" performed by vocalist Angelique Kidjo and guitarists Vernon Reid, Keb Mo', and Buddy Guy. Other cool covers on the Columbia Legacy set include Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry on the Slim Harpo classic "I'm a King Bee," and india.arie's spin on Billie Holiday's signature song, "Strange Fruit." Look for the film version to open in theaters in select cities October 15.
