The warming weather might be calling you outside to play, but a hefty stack of stellar DVDs is tempting you to stay inside with lost footage and behind-the-scenes secrets. A tremendous labor of love is released this Tuesday with T.
Rex: Born to Boogie, a rare film directed in 1972 by Ringo Starr. Now expanded to almost five and a half hours over two DVDs, highlights include multiple audio manipulations, a jam session of "Tutti Fruitti" with Elton John, two full concerts, and two more documentaries - Cosmic Rock: When T.Rex Ruled the World and Re-Born to Boogie: Restoration Doco. The Sanctuary Visual set is also available in a two-CD format, with music from the film, an entire matinée concert, and an exclusive 12-minute interview from 1971.
· More lost footage has just been unveiled from the man in black, Johnny Cash, as his Riding the Rails television special is made available for the first time since its airing in 1974. Subtitled The Great American Train Story, the Rhino Home Video DVD tells the tale of westward expansion and adventure through Cash's song and storytelling and "the lonesome whistle cutting through the night." From boxcar-hobo blues to the "gandydancer" callers who rhythmically united the gangs of workers in step with song, Cash's love for history and our country shine through brightly. Highlights include silent outtakes of abandoned railway stations.
· So, your dad is Peter Gabriel and your sister is singing backup on his new world tour. What's another sibling to do but capture the experience on film as a fly on the wall in 2002? That's what Anna Gabriel has done with Growing Up on Tour: A Family Portrait on the Lakeshore imprint. Utilizing old family super-eight film and a variety of other footage, Gabriel's film is as one would expect: warm, tender, and lovingly funny. Bonus features include the making of the video for "The Barry Williams Show," directed by actor Sean Penn, and Gabriel's solo performance at a fundraiser for the Newport International Film Festival.
· Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders are looking back over their career in a new Greatest Hits DVD package from Rhino Home Video. The package features 21 video clips, and the bonus 45-minute documentary No Turn Left Unstoned is a real gem. Tracking Hynde's journey from Akron, Ohio, to England's exploding new-wave/punk scene as a writer for the New Music Express, to her finally creating a band of her own, the story is told by friends and fans Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, Lemmy of Motorhead, Jeff Buckley, Bono of U2, Rat Scabies of The Damned, Nick Lowe, producer Don Letts, and many more. More than just a story of one band, the film tingles with "you were there" anecdotes and surprises.
